koonsolo··on Why is Hacker News like that?
Observe the force and facial expression. This was not a pleasant "my heart goes out to you", this was clearly a very agressive salute, even more agressive than how most real nazi's would do it.

So no, the gesture was pretty clear.

Can you describe what came out, after letting it run for days? I always have a hard time understanding what kind of task would be worth it.
koonsolo··on Verda (Finland) raises $189M in Series B
It's a bit sad that the only responses you get is "It's based in EU". If that's the only thing, it's not really impressive is it?

Don't get me wrong, as a European I'm all for EU, but we should offer products and services that are at least as good as abroad competitors. My company still relies heavily on US tech, for the simple fact that lots of it is plain better and/or cheaper.

> if we had any good ones in Europe

So you basically confirmed that being located in Europe isn't enough.

koonsolo··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
I like the small % of nutcases in my country. We also consider disinformation a national security threat. That way a foreign adversary cannot push the public into voting for an incompetent, ignorant and arrogant criminal narcissist. I don't want my country to turn into an idiocracy.

And concerning your 2nd amendment, I also own guns. The difference is that only sane, non-violent people can have guns in my country, and crazy people not. You know, crazy people that would take their guns to schools and start shooting.

Enjoy your freedom!

koonsolo··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Speech inciting hatred, violence, or plain misinformation is harmful and so should be illegal or restricted.
koonsolo··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Censorship? Do you mean the fact that we hold platforms accountable if they post hate speech or misinformation, or is this something else?
koonsolo··on OpenAI Discloses Six New Incidents of ‘Concerning’ A.I. Behavior
Good observation. If they are able to keep foreign AI out and stifle small startups with big regulatory upfront costs, they only compete with each other. And if they are all smart, they can keep their prices high and don't compete each other to death.

My kids follow STEM here in Belgium, and there were multiple times when I thought "If only I could do those things when I was young".

At 12 years old, they get an Arduino and start programming in C. Then over the years they do all kinds of interesting things with it: build a car with controlled acceleration, build a tiny house with all kinds of sensors and controllers, monitor algae breeding.

When my son was 16, they brewed their own beer (Hey, it's Belgium and they can legally drink at 16 :D)

Now in the final year, they can propose their own projects. I heard previous years did things like create their own windmill and analyse the efficiency, electric generators in rain drainpipe, etc.

koonsolo··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Do you have any reference to your story? Because this is not the historically accepted one. From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_III_of_Belgium#World_W...):

"On 24 May 1940, Leopold, having assumed command of the Belgian Army, met with his ministers for the final time. The ministers urged the king to leave the country with the government. Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot reminded him that capitulation was a decision for the Belgian government, not for the king, to make. The king indicated that he had decided to remain in Belgium with his troops, whatever the outcome. The ministers took this to mean that he would establish a new government under the direction of Hitler, potentially a treasonous act. Leopold thought that he might be seen as a deserter if he were to leave the country: "He was resolved to remain with his army and amidst his people so as to share their fate."[6] Leopold had long had a difficult and contentious relationship with his ministers, acting independently of government influence whenever possible, and seeking to circumvent and even limit the ministers' powers, while expanding his own."

koonsolo··on The End of Programming
Rewriting something from one language to another is not really the height of software development.

When you have an extensive testing suite, I would claim it's the ideal scenario for LLM's, next to crunching out small tools and MVP's.

Let's first see how it handles the architecture in a 1 year old project of 3 developers, before we make such claims as "the end of programming".

I love LLM's, they save me a lot of time and effort. But their autonomy degrades quickly when you keep adding context and complexity, which a medium codebase clearly has.

koonsolo··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
Maybe their survey should have asked one question: What is the difference between average and median?

More than half would not be able to answer this, and not only in US.

koonsolo··on Slovakia finds Russian backdoor in traffic speed cameras
A prime minister visiting Russia on victory day, sure sounds like pro-Russia to me.

I know plenty of Slovaks, and you can divide them into 2 groups:

First group are disgusted that their government is pro-Russia.

Second group claims the Ukrainian government was "bombing the Donbas", and finds it normal that "Russia went to defend the Russian speaking population".

But sure, the second group probably consider themselves "neutral" and not "pro-Russia". That doesn't mean we all have to consider them as neutral, since they are deep into the Russian disinfo.

koonsolo··on Slovakia finds Russian backdoor in traffic speed cameras
Slovakia is heavily influenced by Russian propaganda, which started way before Corona times.

It's mainly the older people that are influenced by this, and a lot of young people either left the country already, or have concrete plans to leave.

It's really sad, how these old people are ruining the future of their children and grandchildren, really crazy.

You can say a lot about Russia, but they are very good with misinformation, it's a real threat for Europe.

My wife is from Slovakia, so I have front row seats on the whole situation. The kinds of misinformation these older people are willing to believe is really nuts.

koonsolo··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
No, coding is more like building.

A garden shed can easily be built by an AI. A house? Maybe with supervision. A skyscraper? Good luck with that!

And no, garden sheds do not represent 99% of software.

So you erode democracy, and now blame capitalism?

Hi, Europe chiming in here. We still have proper democracies combined with capitalism, and life is great here.

But hey, if you don't like capitalism, go to some country where they don't have it, like North Korea or Cuba.

koonsolo··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
And it all got a nice little push from Russian disinfo, who took the opportunity to discredit governments even more.

Why do you think all the anti-vaxxers all of a sudden got pro-Russian and anti-Ukraine? Coincidence?

koonsolo··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
Some people can't take vaccines because of allergic reactions. Other people have weakened immune systems and so the effect of vaccines is low.

For those people, it's the group that protects them. But of course you always have selfish people that only care about themselves. It was nice to see the amount of selfish people was pretty low in my region, and we got about a 80% vaccination rate.

koonsolo··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise

In Belgium, the polio vaccine is mandatory, and rightly so.

I'm willing to bet that in the next 20 years, some kid in the western world will suffer the consequences of polio, because of the anti-vax lunatics.

koonsolo··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
Imagine 2 competing software companies, one in US, the other in EU. The one in US can now develop using the top LLM, while EU is at a disatvantage. This doesn't sound good for EU companies.
