konradb··on Ask HN: Do you have a project component library/style-guide
This sounds similar to 'storybook' for react.
konradb··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
> How can it be clear it was a failed idea when the idea hasn't even come to fruition?

By doing a cost benefit analysis of the exceptionally high probability likely outcomes

konradb··on Ask HN: Your most useful purchase of under $100 in 2018?
It is a bit more expensive although still under $100 - I've used the 3M joystick mouse for the last decade with much success for hand pain. Worth a try if you ever in the market again. It holds the weight of your hand and takes all strain (at least for me) out of the wrist.
konradb··on Apple Airplay on Raspberry Pi in 7 Easy Steps
My understanding is that this is possible because at some point, the private keys for the airplay encryption were found. Alas airplay 2 cannot be supported unless the same thing happens, which is a shame.
konradb··on US asks allies to drop Huawei
Hi there! Thanks for the info. I'd like to use Google Cloud in the EU - do you have a recent reference for this? I googled but could only find more generic info about GDPR compliance etc.
konradb··on YouTube AI still recommends the flat earth theory by the hundreds of millions
I have difficulty understanding why this flat earth theory thing is undergoing what appears to be a resurgence. What is driving it? Why now? Is it some kind of social experiment? A shibboleth? Or is the joke on me, and they are all in on it?
konradb··on Introducing Conjure, Palantir’s Toolchain for HTTP/JSON APIs
This looks interesting. How do you (if at all) tackle API versioning, or do you see that as orthogonal?
konradb··on Ask HN: What are some red flags for you when interviewing software engineers?
Consistently describing things imprecisely or in a hand-wavey manner.
konradb··on Ask HN: A large tablet for PDFs?
I have one of these; I got it specifically to read large PDFs on. I like it very much. The software has been a bit of a journey but broadly works. As a bonus you can ssh into it and screw around if you have the time or the inclination; there is a bunch of people who experiment with it. I just stick with the reading. It isn't backlit. But it is a beauty, having such a large e-ink screen is fantastic and being able to take notes/draw diagrams etc is great.
konradb··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
Anecdotally... I bought an LG Ultrafine 5K when they came out - I believe I've got one of the initially faulty ones that can't go too close to a WiFi access point due to lack of shielding.

It was flaky as hell when it first came out but over the course of about a month of receiving it, the problems largely seemed to stop occurring.

I typically unplug and plug it in once per day when I take my Macbook Pro away to sit somewhere else in the evening. But when I'm working during the day I use it as my primary display. For my own experience the integration of brightness and volume is seamless. The speakers are good (although I use some old Genelec monitors instead for this), and the quality of the display is absolutely fantastic as you said.

About one in fifty times plugging it in to the laptop doesn't immediately work, and then I plug it into a different USB-C port on the laptop, and then it does.

Despite this I'm very happy with it.

konradb··on iPad Pro
They seemed to show the iPad Pro getting plugged into what appeared to my eye like an LG ultrafine display using USB-C and using it as a display, I'm guessing you could plug a keyboard into one of the USB-C ports in the back of the ultrafine display (or a BT). Obviously not a mouse, and I'd be surprised if a drawing tablet would work.
konradb··on His Body Was Behind the Wheel for a Week Before It Was Discovered
> I've personally experienced a glaring cultural and technical difference between work environments in the SF/Seattle areas and ones in other technology hotspots

I'd be interested to hear about these if you had the time.

konradb··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Used to love Obitus by Psygnosis
konradb··on Taking an indefinite sabbatical from my projects
Not in the situation of the author but I can sympathise a lot with the desire to just be free of interruptions from the thing you want to concentrate on now. To be interrupted constantly stops you ever going deep on what you want to concentrate on.
konradb··on Kubernetes Is a Surprisingly Affordable Platform for Personal Projects
Would it be possible to elaborate on centralized auth with an example? I've done a small amount of playing around with k8s but I'd not heard of this specific use case.
konradb··on Distractions Cause Bad Code
I'm finding as I get older I'm tolerating distractions less and less, or rather as the distractions come, I find them even more frustrating as the years go on.

I know how well I can work when I have one thing to concentrate on for a period of time, and how badly I can work when there are eight different concurrent projects with questions coming in through slack throughout the day.

It is quite a challenge to try to flow through. I meditate and this helps to create some mental space but that doesn't (for me) mitigate the distractions that much.

konradb··on Ask HN: Codebase at my work is a complete mess, what should I do?
For example I work with a codebase like this. It is over ten years old, have multiple people working on it, many learning or of differing abilities. Frameworks have been used and over time their limitations come to light. Often people have been band-aided something to save time, because they have been under severe time constraints. Large swathes of it are almost superseded but not quite. The purpose of the software has subtly shifted over the last decade.
konradb··on Show HN: Alpaca Getaways – Affordable, pre-planned weekend getaways for 2 adults
I was immediately drawn to the idea of a getaway that involved alpacas somehow because I love those woolly guys and greatly enjoyed llama trekking. The page looks well put together though, well done and best of luck!
konradb··on Ask HN: How did you come to grips with your own mediocrity?
You are telling yourself this, but you don't realise it - you are mistaking your own voice for objective reality. You might have heard the expression 'the map is not the territory'.

The only person thinking bad things about you is you.

konradb··on Ask HN: What's difficult about selling to enterprises?
Length of sales cycle is a biggie. You have to stick through it for months, sometimes even years, in order to get the result at the end.

There now can be a lot more dancing around security, so you might expect to work through gargantuan spreadsheets or documents answering odd, often poorly thought-out questions about how you handle security in hundreds of places/scenarios in your organization. Once you've answered these someone might come on-site and ask you to show evidence. Then they'll want to confirm more details. A lot of patience is needed.

konradb··on Below the Surface – Finds from an archaeological project in the River Amstel
The grid of images seemed considerably large; my guess is if the page was just a static grid of images it would increase their bandwidth costs considerably, and might give rise to issues where if you scroll down far, it would still be loading images from much higher up. Using this technique it looks like when you scroll somewhere, it can load the images that you have navigated to. Maybe modern browsers are smarter in this respect? I'm not sure.
konradb··on Current state of webdesign
Aaah P3P, that was the one. Thanks for reminding me. Sadly even if all the browsers supported it, sites possibly still wouldn't use it and would prefer this onslaught of popups due to the relentless quest for attention.
konradb··on Current state of webdesign
Despite using adblock the web does feel like this nowadays. It would be fantastic if we could have a common protocol for communicating our agreement/disagreement with these things instead of having to bat them away like whack-a-mole wherever we end up on the web.

Going back 15-20 years ago there was an embryonic standard for this that didn't seem to get enough traction, I remember it as something like 'PPP' privacy something protocol, but it seemed a bit too heavyweight. If I remember correctly you could use different personas.

I would love this all just to be a browser preference.

konradb··on Ask HN: What are your workstation peripherals of choice?
The 3M joystick mouse might be worth a try, I have tried a model of mouse similar to yours and found that I much preferred the joystick mouse due to being able to rest the side of my hand on the base. With the mouse that was similar to yours it seemed less restful. Maybe worth a try if you haven't tried it. I keep on trying different mice and always come back to the 3M joystick mouse. It certainly isn't perfect, and I miss the Magic Trackpad gestures terribly.
konradb··on App Maker, Google’s low-code tool for building business apps, comes out of beta
I'm also interested in why you think it is a crap idea as opposed to complaints about the implementation or UI.
konradb··on Notifications in iOS 12
I would love something also for Safari and Chrome that just removed all the 'we value your privacy, press some button' popup that so many sites now have.
konradb··on The Psychology of Dreaded Tasks
Weirdly it feels like it might lead to more inaccuracies to have everything re-keyed many times, due to variances in how people remember things and enter subtly different information in forms on subsequent occasions.
konradb··on Ask HN: Can I kill the 'uses cookies' warning?
This has made the web truly infuriating. It has got a lot worse since the GDPR introduction, it feels like every other site wants to greet you on arrival with some message you just want to bat away.
konradb··on Ask HN: Is it stupid to buy from domain resellers?
My personal opinion is take the net or the org and be done with thinking about it :) by your own admission you are doing something that is taking time, it sounds like your time is better spent just having this set up at 'some' name rather than something specific. All the best :)
konradb··on How do you know it's time to do the next thing?
It feels to me that a period as short as that would prevent you from learning a whole bunch of interesting things.

Technical lessons about design, architecture, and infrastructure choices one has made, how they cope with scale, subtle mis-steps, etc. Interpersonal lessons about how people develop and communicate. Lessons about why some approaches work and don't work organisationally.
