koinedad··on Apple Notes Will Gain Markdown Export at WWDC, and, I Have Thoughts
Looking forward to markdown support! I’d love something like what Notion does for input using markdown
koinedad··on Show HN: Job board aggregator for best paying remote SWE jobs in the U.S.
I like the idea of this site unfortunately it’s unusable on my phone from the row lag. I’ll have to check it out on my laptop soon.
koinedad··on Monitoring my Minecraft server with OpenTelemetry and Prometheus
I’ve recently added telemetry to some “toy” apps at my house because a power outage or other unforeseen issue has caused things like my Siri enabled garage doors to stop working. Now I get alerts through grafana and telegram for basically free which comes in handy.
koinedad··on The best programmers I know
Lots of good stuff in here I wholly agree with. The simplest one is the “read the reference” one. This is a super power if you can get into the habit of it.
koinedad··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Depending on your role, company, and tech stack there is a lot to learn in software engineering. It can get pretty complex, confusing, etc. This is partly why I like to. I like a challenge. A puzzle. I like to learn new things. But sometimes it’s also very frustrating.
koinedad··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
Something about the font on this blog is not friendly to my eyes.
koinedad··on You should know this before choosing Next.js
I haven’t used recent versions but I remember trying to use it like 6 years ago on a project and trying to figure out how to display an SVG was ridiculous. The solution was a specific next-svg package… but that’s not a great experience to need to find Next-specific packages for common uses. We ended up going with CRA at the time, today I imagine we would’ve chose React/Vite but we also didn’t need any benefits of SSR for the project
koinedad··on I Turned Off Apple Intelligence – Sad Update
Yep, no use on my computer. Can’t think of a feature that would be helpful they announced. A better Siri would benefit me but I don’t have a new enough iPhone. I did try “who did I meet with for lunch last week” on my iPad and it failed miserably, but I think that’s because the feature wasn’t released…too bad the commercials came out way before the feature was launched
koinedad··on Show HN: Breakout with a roguelite/vampire survivor twist
I like the idea, makes it much more engaging. Some things were a little confusing like the coins concept. Also sometimes the ball trajectory is a little wonky, not sure if that’s just me. Nice work!
koinedad··on LeetCode but You Can Force People to Code in Light Mode
The magic elements are a fun idea!
koinedad··on Swift's server support powers Things Cloud
Cool to see this, I tried running a side project using Vapor on my local computer but ran into build issues. Maybe I should try again!

koinedad··on Using AI for Coding: My Journey with Cline and LLMs
Was this blog also written by LLM?
koinedad··on Steam Brick: No screen, no controller, just a power button and a USB port
Awesome mod
koinedad··on Show HN: Habby – A straightforward bullet journal with habit tracking
Nice job, like the design and idea
koinedad··on I made a multiplayer shooter game in Lisp, here is my journey
Was surprised that it loaded on my phone, nice work!
koinedad··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
This blog takes a very narrow view on the subject… more people are realizing how the school systems are and that education can be done in different and even sometimes better ways.
koinedad··on Take the pedals off the bike
I taught most of my kids this way once I heard about. There are even bikes marketed as such now called balance bikes. Pretty mind blowing how fast it works.
koinedad··on I Run LLMs Locally
Helpful summary, short but useful
koinedad··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
If you’re changing languages fairly regularly it can be more helpful, but if you’re in a comfortable language it’s pretty easy to memorize the most common functions/methods etc.

I recently had to switch to a project in Ruby and the LSP was not working it was frustrating but I can’t say that when it started working the next day that it helped me that much more. Maybe like 10% improvement?

Command F, command shift F in most IDEs to look up the definition if LSP isn’t working just search for name and append the class, method, function definition syntax. Like “function getUser” or whatever.

koinedad··on New Google Sheet on half of 13.6" MacBook Air screen is fully covered by popups
I’ve never been a fan of google UI/UX myself
koinedad··on 3D-Printed Dune Chess Set
Really cool design
koinedad··on Most iPhone owners see little to no value in Apple Intelligence so far
The few things I’ve tried on my iPad which supports Apple Intelligence haven’t worked so the fact that’s there’s a rollout of isolated features that is not clear to the user doesn’t help. I tried some of the stuff I saw in commercials and it failed miserably ha
koinedad··on Why so many families are "drowning in toys"
Steamdeck is awesome. Just don’t sign up for the wishlist sale emails . I had to turn off notifications because I was buying way more games than I could play.
koinedad··on Why so many families are "drowning in toys"
This is very true, it’s super stressful for kids especially when they have a messy room depending on their personality type they can be completely paralyzed by the amount of toys. Having higher quality or even just toys curated to the core desires of the child can help reduce wasteful purchases. I can’t count how many “awesome” toys I’ve donated to goodwill because my kids realized they didn’t want them after a few days, or weeks.
koinedad··on Trust in scientists hasn't recovered from Covid. Some humility could help
Masks, social distancing (6ft, stickers, circles, plastic shields), 5% projected death toll, did not come from lab, don’t question, no alternate views allowed, mark and ban things on all major social media channels if they are deemed “harmful misinformation”. This was my life while living in SF at the start of the pandemic.

Yeah I think we need some intellectual humility. And I definitely listen for intellectual humility when I’m reading or listening to something.

koinedad··on Teach yourself to echolocate (2018)
I’m wondering if we use it more than we think. When I have my headphones in with noise cancelling on I’m more inclined to bump something in my house I normally wouldn’t or misjudge a distance etc. Pretty crazy to think about forming a subconscious, audio-based world
koinedad··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
I have negotiated every SWE offer I’ve had. It doesn’t “feel” good, but it’s helpful to know virtually all roles have wiggle room.

The truth is engineers are still being hired and it costs money (and time/money) to interview more people or continue interviewing people in the pipeline, so offering more to a good candidate is worth it for most companies.

koinedad··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
An experience I’m familiar with: 1. Hired fully remote to virtual location etc. 2. A few months after joining RTO (return to office) enforced even though I’m not technically returning 3. About a year later RTH (return to team hub) announced with about 1 month for internal transfer or move to Seattle with in a few months. 4. Roughly 2 months later 5 days a week announced.
