koheripbal··on TSMC to send hundreds more workers to speed U.S. plant construction
The necessity to protect Taiwan will be diminished, of course.

It's still a good idea, net net.

koheripbal··on It's weird that people get mocked for changing their minds
The reality is that people are mocked when they hold political beliefs that mockers don't share.

Political commentary online is neither fair nor honest. It creates negative value for any platform.

You can always find a way to mock someone, for even the most common and innocent behaviors.

koheripbal··on FedEx Accused of Largest Odometer Rollback Fraud in History with Used Vans
We need to make evidence based judgements, not accusation based judgements.

I'm tired of the outage-clickbait.

I'm here to learn, not to be emotionally manipulated.

koheripbal··on LastPass users locked out due to MFA resets
Unless you want to self host, it is naive to think other password managers are not also the subject of attack
koheripbal··on How to raise a Roman army: The dilectus
Carthage was trying to conquer Rome. They had no choice but to keep fighting.

...But they didn't raise a full army again until the next generation of soldiers was raised and Carthage had returned to North Africa.

koheripbal··on San Francisco's Pain Worsens as Workers, Visitors, and Shoppers Leave
It's a bit of an extreme anecdote, but my friend's family was like that. They smoked pot around the kids and were very liberal. 10 years later their teenage son died in a fatal car accident because he was driving while high.
koheripbal··on What character was removed from the alphabet? (2020)
My kids thought Elmo was part of the alphabet for an embarrassing amount of time.
koheripbal··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
The moment they post it publicly, it is no longer considered personal private content
koheripbal··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
No, this is a dishonest argument used by anti nuclear advocates.

Decommissioning is not actually needed. Plants can be run indefinitely with the correct maintenance.

Where is the decommissioning fund for the Hover Dam? Or the highway system? Or literally any other factory or power plant?

It is a cost no other industry faces.

koheripbal··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
Russian influence operations as well.

It is well documented

koheripbal··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
And then supported by Russia
koheripbal··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
The government subsidizes all major accident insurance across all industries. Nuclear should not be different.
koheripbal··on Consciousness and Anaesthesia (2009)
I've been thinking a lot about my same experience. I also spoke to her as it was kicking in.

It was humbling. Like a computer being turned off, and then back on an hour later.

For that time, I didn't exist. It helped convince me that after death there is just.... Nothing.

koheripbal··on It’s infuriatingly hard to understand how closed models train on their input
It's not.

I think because of the broad implications some people expect everything to be open source.

But I think that's unrealistic and naive.

koheripbal··on Popular Subreddits are organizing a strike on 2023-06-12 b/c high API prices
Also, the mods don't do it for free at all. They get paid to promote content.

All the primary mods on the big subs also have online social media marketing consultancies.

koheripbal··on World’s oceans at record high temperature for 80 consecutive days
We were lucky nuclear war didn't happen, and it still might.

I think the risk of nuclear war is higher now, with more nations having more weapons, fewer treaties preventing profession, and an increasingly multipolar power dynamic in international affairs.

koheripbal··on Nvidia Started in a Denny’s. Now It’s Worth $1T
The pe ratio will increase.
koheripbal··on StackOverflow petition to allow removing AI generated content
Why? If the answers are good, leave them.
koheripbal··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
The problem is two fold because the VR video games are boring.
koheripbal··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
Games sell game controllers, not the other way around.

When a sufficiently good experience is available for VR, which isn't usable without VR, then VR headsets will sell.

I've tried all the VR apps and games, and they all underwhelm.

koheripbal··on CPR's true survival rate is lower than many people think
Isn't an AED only useful for tachycardia? I'm case of drowning, heart attack, or most other causes of a stopped heart, it isn't useful, correct?
koheripbal··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
The harmful dose is many orders of magnitude higher than the concentration in tap water.

Dose makes the poison. Literally any chemical in sufficient dose is poisonous

koheripbal··on Ask HN: If you were suddenly Financially free, what would you do next?
The grass is always greener. Don't jump from one extreme to another.
koheripbal··on Gravitational-wave detector LIGO is back
The Android app is so outdated that my Pixel 3a is too new to run it!
koheripbal··on How AI coding companions will change the way developers work
This time it's different. And I mean that sincerely, not sarcastically.

I use it to code in languages I don't know.

koheripbal··on My 20 year career is technical debt or deprecated
Well, a more accurate comparison would be if you made a chair 20 years ago, and now no one makes chairs anymore because we have all become robots.
koheripbal··on Run Llama 13B with a 6GB graphics card
Given the current price (mostly free) off public llms I'm not sure what the use case of running out at home are yet.

OpenAIs paid GPT4 has few restrictions and is still cheap.

... Not to mention GPT4 with browsing feature is vastly superior to any home of the models you can run at home.

koheripbal··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
That, but now much more
koheripbal··on Why Conscious AI Is a Bad, Bad Idea
It might become the law.

This is going to become a big ethical debate.
