kodisha··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
I am very spoiled by living in one of the European capitals. It's super safe here, and it's normal thing to see young females taking a dog out for a walk in 22-02h.

I visit SF at least once a year, and default to my learned habit of walking alone, and later at night.

No more.

kodisha··on Ask HN: Programming monitor recommendations, 2023 edition

kodisha··on These are the countries where Netflix is cutting prices

Is there a saas/browser plugin where you enter a name and then it alerts you if this name shows up in any hiring emails/slack conversation/twitter browsing?

Asking for a friend ;)

kodisha··on Instagram Is Over
I think it's safe to assume that it's purpose is to gather data.
kodisha··on Act: Run your GitHub Actions locally
Can anyone point me out to a GH repo with this or similar setup. Eager to learn, especially if it runs a bit more complex node/next.js build.

kodisha··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
While I live somewhere in 3rd world country, and have no idea who OK'd this kind of change, I am sure many of you know.

So yeah, we should not all be like - oh, how stupid of YouTube to do this, like youtube is some conscious entity.

No, a person did this, a person with a name did this.

kodisha··on Podman Desktop: A Free OSS Alternative to Docker Desktop
Hyped by those comments, I went and tried both colima and podman.

My use case is the simplest of them all:

A docker compose file for postgres12 with a folder attached as permanent volume.

- colima couldnt do chmod, and it failed when i tried to restore database to folder. I tracked an issue on github, known stuff, issue is couple of years old.

- podman made it work somehow, data restore was under way - it run out of file descriptors, again - know bug with postgres and other scenarios, tracked on github for few years.

turned off, fired docker again, it works.

meh :(

kodisha··on Analysis of Apple Watch running data
OMG thanks!

Installing it right away!

kodisha··on Analysis of Apple Watch running data
Semi related iWatch Rant - if you think running data is bad, try tracking your sleep.

It just doesn't work.

- Sleep for 3h - wake up for 1, sleep for 5 more: records 3h only.

- (being a parent of a small baby) do not sleep at all during the night, sleep 4+3 hours during the day: 0 hours recorded

- sleep trough the night but wake up every 90-100 minutes (baby again): 0 hours recorded

Damn, this is a $500+ device, and it cant even get basic sleep data correctly. Also, it takes anywhere from 1min to couple of hours for data to appear in the Health app.

OTOH my wife has ~3 year old Huawei Fit watch, which was about $120, and that thing records every 10-15min or longer nap. Without a mistake.

kodisha··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
Someone PLEASE build a browser extension that automatically coverts those Disney numbers to normal units :)
kodisha··on Ask HN: Why are there so few artificial sunlight or artificial window products?
This made me think how little I actually think deeply about things.

I read an OP question, and was like, meh there must be something out there.

Then I read your answer, and was like, ohhhh this makes total sense. Of course you can't have equivalent of THE SUN for $50 and consuming couple of watts per day.

kodisha··on Meld for Macs
Actually, I think I answered my own question.

That tool is so good because it leverages the entire eco-system of IDE it is running in. The resulting merge panel is as powerful as any editor window in the IDE. It has code inspections, it detects missing imports, it does everything.

It might be the case that ripping the diff/merge tool out of the IDE would result in way inferior product than we get when we use it within the IDE.

kodisha··on Meld for Macs
I REALLY love the way merge tool works in IntelliJ IDEA.

Is there some other tool out there that works in a similar way, and that good?

(tho, typing idea . and doing a merge fix is not that bad)

kodisha··on Ask HN: Food Addiction
I excersize a LOT.

I admitted defeat. I love food.

But then I quit all of the shitty stuff, no more sweet stuff, no more sodas, no more potato chips.

Weight went down, but I stagnated again. Then I started again with High Intensity training - and that's it, food still goes in, food gets burned down.

Never felt better.

kodisha··on April Fools and Hacker News
I love April 1st.

You get to see, first hand, how much people can be UNCREATIVE in creative/marketing/PR departments.

kodisha··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
The only thing that is (kinda) better IRL is impromptu debug sessions, or that initial couple of days when you are bootstrapping a new project, so it's nice to sit with person(s) who are working on this.

Even those are easily matched in quality with zoom/slack and draw on screen features.

kodisha··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Best feature of Deezer by FAR:

That unlimited lenght "Flow" playlist. It's like personalized radio, but you can skip songs.

I'm so sad that Spotify didn't implement such a feature yet.

kodisha··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
Transformers movies took that to a very extreme, where every fight scene is just a constant motion blur (zoomed).
kodisha··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
I you could once a year do +100 votes instead of regular +1 vote, I would do in right here, even though it's not even half of January.
kodisha··on Ruling party figures say Poland has Pegasus spyware
How can one fight against this software? Or are you going to get infected with it no matter what phone/OS you use??
kodisha··on Leetcode has taught me that I'm a bad engineer
Once you accept that LC is used 80% for personality traits test, and 20% as actual knowledge test it gets easier to swallow your pride and do the grind in order to get in to the desired company.

That is, if you want to be a part of such company.

Because, yes, compensation is awesome, and you get the shares and what not, but there is more to life than that.

Scratch the surface a bit deeper, there are many different companies out there with different core values that will attract totally different group of people - while having all of the benefits of a "well known company"
