koblas··on Dino – A web app, mobile app and desktop app for jotting down thoughts
Fads...

Let's be realistic everybody whois is in the information economy is trying to organize the chaotic stream of information that is flying there way 24x7. You've got everything from idea, to books you want to read, to slack messages, meeting notes, etc.etc. It's always interesting to see somebody say OMG let's try the "If it doesn't give you joy throw it out" as a method of organizing, but that's assuming one size fits everybody. Note-taking is not a one-size fits everybody, everybody has different strengths and weaknesses. Some people thrive on lists, some people thrive in chaos.

There are interesting challenges of how to create and collect information in a team environment that helps share a vision. On an individual basis, no one shoe is going to fit everybody and it's not going to fit you at different times in your life.

I realize this is a non-answer, but it's also looking at this with some perspective around the some of the original ideas of the web were just to solve this problem.

koblas··on Away from Exceptions: Errors as Values
suretype looks interesting, will have to do a bit of review there. One of the things we're now doing is using io-ts for both encoding and decoding types. Internally we're more JSON than gRPC so we're using it to provide a standardized way to move data between components.
koblas··on Away from Exceptions: Errors as Values
Interesting that the author used joi as the example, when the io-ts validation library fully embraces the functional world with success/fail return value from validation. Realistically, the advantage throw has is that if you have a single error handler in a function it avoids the "go" problem of tons of lines of error handling. The other side is that error handling becomes "optional".
koblas··on Bringing supply chain security features to the Go community
The "biggest" problem in the JavaScript ecosystem (NPM) is that dependadabot doesn't know how to discriminate between dependancies and devDepandancies.

I don't really care if jest includes a package that has a regex issue. It's not production code. I do care if babel introduces a backdoor, but somehow they're treated with equal importance.

koblas··on No Code Reviews by Default
SOC 2 compliance as well. If you cannot check the box that says "all changes are reviewed prior to release" you're SOL.
koblas··on Booking.com to repay €65M Dutch State aid after €28M in bonuses for 3 US execs
Was listening to CBC and they made an excellent point. Which is that the Air Canada board of directors has nobody on it from any union or "representing" the employees. When you look at the compensation committee you see other people in executive roles.

Could you see any union representative on the board of directors voting for executive bonuses after they layoffs over the last year. Until such biases at the BOD level are addresses you will only continue to see similar actions.

koblas··on Overnight Pizza and the Consistent Unreliability of Expert Guidelines
The last two paragraphs are exactly where I undid all of my reading.

> In the USDA’s standard this is probably a net benefit - you basically know they are lying at all times, ...

Equating the USDA recommendations to lies, because their conservative recommendations are meant for easy understanding and practice undermines any of the above research. Since now you're left wondering what viewpoint the author is advocating any why I'm reading yet another science bashing writer.

Authentication: Bearer headers

koblas··on Authelia is an open-source authentication/authorization server with 2FA/SSO
This was interesting up until I found this line in the documentation. Which is having authentication based on cookies is a non-starter for many organizations at this point.

> Authelia relies on session cookies to authenticate users. When the user visits a website of the protected domain example.com for the first time, Authelia detects that there is no cookie for that user. Consequently, Authelia redirects the user to the login portal through which the user should authenticate to get a cookie which is valid for *.example.com,

koblas··on Building Webhooks into Your Application: Guidelines and Best Practices (2020)
What people totally omit when thinking about webhooks is the parallels to web sockets and client side updates. In the last round of our system updates, we have "attached" the web sockets and webhooks to the same message bus which has simplified the overall design of the system.

koblas··on React Best Practices for 2021
Really wish the author had gone all in on hook patterns rather than start with component patterns and make a transition.

1. Use TypeScript to catch errors early

2. Use hooks

3. Build your data access layer as custom hooks -- e.g. const { isLoggedIn, loggin } = useAuth();

4. Tips on refactoring to have testable components

5. Understand when to use memoization -- expensive is in the eye of the beholder.

Working on Tax/Person ID validation.

First building out this JS library - https://github.com/koblas/stdnum-js

which I plan on embedding in this React static site.

https://tininfo.com/country/AD/individual/NRT/

- Currently mired in building out all of the country validation in JS (the thing I know how to do) - Should really be working on building out more website templates and proving the functionality.

Why? Because I have to validate VAT numbers CPF or other random ID numbers on a regular basis and right now building unit tests just to test an 8 digit number...

koblas··on Optimizing Lambda Cost with Multi-Threading
My best take away is that if you're running the usual collection of interpreted languages (JavaScript/Python/etc.) you'll probably never get the benefit of having multi-threaded lambda functions for reducing runtime. Given that we now have milisecond billing, this can really result in real savings at scale.

I'm also in that 30 year camp. Will say that I value things that understand my time has value. I can say that I've gone from having the stereo with 7.1 channels and balancing a room to just give me a Sonos.

koblas··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
I could argue that Atlanta is tier 3 as well, the distinction between tier 2/3 could just be a simple rule of numbers (over a 1M pop vs. under 1M pop) and not a tech center. Or in my case that when I've interviewed people from the given locations that they didn't meet the bar by a given level. UIUC produces some amazing engineers, but UChicago doesn't...

koblas··on Why Zoom Chose Oracle
The article misses the Amazon competitive problem. Quite a few retail companies will not do business with companies that host on AWS infrastructure (e.g. Walmart).

koblas··on Show HN: Socks Protocol Version 5 Library in Go
It was an SSL connection with a custom cert chain. So I could easily wrap the HTTP side of things with a SOCKS forwarder which then SOCKS proxied into the VPN and then back out to the other site.

There might have been another way to do it, but given that wrapping HTTP in a SOCKS proxy is easy and ssh has a built in SOCKS proxy, this was quick win.

ps. It's SOCKS and not Socks - for the subject line of this story.

koblas··on Show HN: Socks Protocol Version 5 Library in Go
I will always say this was a complete hack to a specific time in history. Having SOCKS in your toolbelt of tricks is always handy and can make hard things surprisingly easy.

Last time was I needed to tunnel a request from my development environment into a production VPN to contact a service which had IP access restrictions.

koblas··on Go Contracts – Draft Design
The proposal has a very short statement about implementation. If you think about this very carfully, you realize that part of the compilation speed of go allows you to compile a single package into code without having to leak out all of you abstractions.

If you have contracts/generics then you need to have un-compiled code as part of your exports. Which is a huge break from the current approach.
