knowuh··on Jewelbots – A Friendship Bracelet You Can Code
I am TOTES buying one of these for myself (cis male).

I wouldn't deprive anyone of this.

knowuh··on Cybersecurity Incident Involving Consumer Information
> Credit reporting agencies are one of the greatest/worst rackets in the modern financial system

Can someone notify me when the class action has been initiated?

knowuh··on Ask HN: Why is Bluetooth so unreliable?
I thought 802.11 and BlueTooth were both brought to market in the late 90s. Am I mistaken?

Your statement seems like a 'first out of the gate', or 'battle tested' argument. They are approximately the same age, no?

They aren't competing technologies; they have differing use cases.

One has enjoyed wide success, and the other is still stumbling along.

Is it a case of unclear standards, bad implementations, or lack of interest in the blue-tooth use case of wireless accessory devices?

knowuh··on Font Awesome 5
I just wanted to plug Icomoon ( https://icomoon.io/ ) -- They will let you assemble your own custom font icon set using subsets of public glyphs such as FA, and your own SVG images. I Hope this helps someone.
knowuh··on The Line Between Data Vis and Data Art
It doesn't seem like you read her article. Or you don't understand the distinction between fine art and design.

Lisa is stating that art and design serve different functions. "Design needs to be functional" she sates. Art has different constraints and responsibilities.

The artist or designer should know their intention, and audience. They are producing a piece for either PS1 or the NYT.

Its not for the critic to work out the intentions of the artist / designer.

knowuh··on Ask HN: What is the most mind blowing book you've ever read?
"Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology" by Valentino Braitenberg is a quick read, and fun thought experiment. It's inspirational for engineering tinkering types.
knowuh··on F-35 Engines from United Technologies Called Unreliable by GAO
90 - 120 hours is the target MTBF for a jet engine? _mind blown_ glad I am not in aeronautics.
knowuh··on Ask HN: Who are your favorite poets?
Just had to add my favorite, William Carlos Williams:

  so much depends
  upon

  a red wheel
  barrow

  glazed with rain
  water

  beside the white
  chickens.

knowuh··on Ask HN: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma
What works for me: admit that you are going to want to do other things. They are going to show up even as side comments in the material you are learning. Keep a list of things you will work on later. Don't sort it, but make a deal with your future self to review the list after you reach "the end" of your current study. "The end" should also be clearly defined, hopefull by some small capstone project. Amorphous goals are never attained, and every topic is endless. Set an achievable goal.
knowuh··on PullClean: Door handles as sanitizers
Doors are a congestion area, and seem like exactly the wrong place to be doing something like washing hands.
knowuh··on Boston's Basic City Services Dashboard
Vanity metrics for a mayor?
knowuh··on Support an open source animation feature film made with Blender
I love blender, but I don't think Ton's rationale for not using kickstarter is compelling. Although blender.org gets some page-views, it's the same audience of people who already know about blender. Kickstarter would have introduced a new demographic, and provided more traffic to the blender.org page. Blender is an awesome project, with serious momentum, but I am worry sometimes about Ton's hubris.
knowuh··on We Need to Talk About TED
Complaining that a 5 minute TED talk isn't "meaningful" is like complaining that popcorn isn't nutritious. This isn't worth writing about; you just have the wrong expectations.

As for " middlebrow megachurch infotainment." – just trolling for eyeballs.

knowuh··on Ask HN: What do you wish you knew about UI/UX design?
I would like to hear about the larger process:

  * Evaluating an interfaces usability quantitatively.
  * The ROI profile for good design. What's the sweet spot, and when do you start yack shaving?
  * How do 'cool looking', 'compelling' and 'usable' relate to value.
  * Which of the above fall are squarely in the domain of UI designer?
  * What does a UI team look like? What skills? How are decisions made?
  * From a Designers perspective, how should a software product begin its life?
