knowriju··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
I don't quite understand the other comments. The press release says Mistra Large is available first on Azure. Which means it will be available on other platforms as well ?

Also, MS's relationship with OpenAI is that they have access to OpenAI's model for use in their products as well as potentially the source code. Is there anything similar with Mistral ? I can't find any such wording anywhere.

knowriju··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
We should just automete these comments: MS: Oh No! Embrace Extend Extinguish ! Google: Oh No! killedbygoogle ! Meta: Oh No! So much Ads ! Apple: Oh No! Evil App Store policy !

Wow, somebody has a deep wound that still hurts.
knowriju··on Losing Trust in Google
I wonder what the folks in Cupertino are thinking when they look at this brouhaha over Google being supremely risk averse and receiving such blacklash. How will Siri answer if you ask "Is Elon Musk just a meme lord or Tech Bro's cultural savior".

Side Note: As a person living outside US, I find US focused discorse's obsession with race and skin color such fascinating. It is almost similar to people obsessing over the color of a button on the home page when the page itself takes 1 minute to load.

knowriju··on The killer app of Gemini Pro 1.5 is using video as an input
I am interested to see how Apple's insistence on privacy will square with their GenAI products. If they don't collect feedback and usage data how will they use RLHF to make their suit better ? I understand that have been cutting deals with few publication companies, but will that suffice?
knowriju··on Gemma: New Open Models
I doubt Gemma is targeted for use by a layperson.

Care to share some topics where the things are moving towards? I understand diffusion, GaNs and Mamba is in vogue these days, but those are different logical architecture. I am unsure where the next level ML physical architecture research is moving towards.

Because this food item was a 'hack' ? Invented just to reuse the left over chicken tikka from the day before.

knowriju··on Gemini: Fast Failure Recovery in Distributed Training with In-Memory Checkpoints [pdf]
I think this points more to how slow the paper submission process is compared to the product creation velocity. No wonder arxiv has been such a hit for the ML community.
knowriju··on Circle (or highlight or scribble) to search
Ticktok Shop sold 20B$ of items and Temi sold 10B$. All of that came from 'impulse buys' of the customers possibly because people were looking at something and wanted to buy it.
knowriju··on Meta unlawfully ignores the users' right to easily withdraw consent: complaint
I personally would prefer MAMAA instead
knowriju··on Groqchat
Yes, you are.
knowriju··on If needed, you have a role at Microsoft that matches your compensation
I doubt all of those 700+ employees are ML Researchers. For the majority of that employee base there would be an equivalent role already in MS. That wouldn't go well with them. Eg. There would be atleast 1 web-developer in OpenAI who would have written the ChatGPT UI. That person for all we know might be better payed that the web-developer folks working on Bing UI.
knowriju··on Google's plan to stop Apple from getting serious about search
Apple would be forced to integrate AI into their products given all the competitive pressure from Microsoft and Google. It would be fun to see how Apple spins how it will collect all the data necessary to train the models. Given the current direction of LLMs, they'll need lots of data to train the foundational models. So, either Apple will swallow their ego and cut a deal with Meta to use LLAMA2 as a base model that they can fine-tune, or I predict you'll see Apple come out all guns blazing that AI is fundamentally against human privacy, so no iAI. Either ways, would be good fun to see how iFanBoys spin this.
knowriju··on Goldman Sachs reportedly said Apple Card savings account was a mistake
That's for the merchant. Merchants only have access to the tokenised card number. MasterCard and Goldman will surely have access to the actual card number. How would you recon they generate monthly statement otherwise?

Pretty clickbaity to say 'India enable' when the article says 'India's Laws enable' A similar headline for US folks would be 'US enable classroom shooting' where the actualy it is 'US's 2nd amendment laws sometimes leads to...'
knowriju··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
I think getting recommendation of similar books to read is a feature rathen than a bug. If you ask your friend to recommend a book the first question they'll usually ask is 'what kinds of book do you like'. Either that or you get recommended whatever NYTimes says is the bestseller (which may not match your taste).

knowriju··on EU suggests breaking up Google's ad business in preliminary antitrust ruling
Err... Meta / Microsoft /Yahoo ? Also depending on how you look at it, you can buy ads to showcase your business in Amazon, Apple as well.
knowriju··on Social network ad targeting can “listen into” conversations using “live photos”
Would be good to point out that Apple also has a rising Ads division now.
knowriju··on Alphabet shares dive after Google AI chatbot Bard flubs answer in ad
What the article states but subtly implies differently is what they mean by 'after'. Event 1 was incorrect info in ad. Event 2 was shares stumbling 8% The article just says that Event 2 happened after Event 1 and not that Event 2 happened 'because of' Event 1.
knowriju··on Google Invests Almost $400M in ChatGPT Rival Anthropic
What I usually never see mentioned is the fair use doctrine. As soon as some website (reddit/yelp etc) is able to prove that their data has been used to train an AI that is monetisable, they'll be up in arms.

I believe this tech is so different and revolutionary, that the lawyers have yet to wrap their head around it. I predict a million lawsuits incoming any time now. This I believe is the primary reason for Google not releasing any product before the water gets tested. For what its worth Google already has access to lots and lots of data that it owns, that it can train its AI on (Photos, Gmail, Docs, obviously Search and probably YouTube as well)

Would be interesting to see how Elon's own schedule looks like. And no not his PR enabled one. Would love to understand how he finds time to meme post almost every hour and handles all the insane context switching from managing 4/5 companies at a time.
