kmatthews812··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (February 2026)
SEEKING FREELANCER Remote, 40 hours a week, long term project, Eastern Time Zone

I am seeking a freelancer with significant Flutter experience to help rebuild the mobile app of a well known media brand. You must be available 40 hours a week, starting in late February, and be able to coordinate during eastern time zone working hours.

If interested, please email your LinkedIn to kevin@xolvio.com.

kmatthews812··on After two years of vibecoding, I'm back to writing by hand
Beware the two extremes - AI out of the box with no additional config, or writing code entirely by hand.

In order to get high accuracy PRs with AI (small, tested commits that follow existing patterns efficiently), you need to spend time adding agents (claude.md, agents.md), skills, hooks, and tools specific to your setup.

This is why so much development is happening at the plugin layer right now, especially with Claude code.

The juice is worth the squeeze. Once accuracy gets high enough you don't need to edit and babysit what is generated, you can horizontally scale your output.

kmatthews812··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Paid In Bio https://www.paidinbio.com

HN is probably not the target audience for this, but I've become really obsessed about solving my own problem of building apps, but struggling to market them. There are very few places online that welcome you to post links, enable you to post a link quickly, and drive targeted traffic at reasonable cost.

So I'm trying to bootstrap a new ad network on Link In Bio platforms that offers this trifecta (welcoming, quick, cost effective).

kmatthews812··on Ask HN: How do you make a living contributing to and/or creating OSS projects?
Has anybody considered selling ad space on their Github READMEs for popular OSS packages?

Contributions are great, but I'd imagine more money would be generated for OSS devs if the contributors got something in return - namely highly targeted web traffic from a link on the README.

Personally, I'd like to buy a few links on READMEs to source more consulting work, but finding contact information and cold emailing repository owners is pretty difficult.

Thoughts?

kmatthews812··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
"As a manager, I feel that using metrics from productivity tools to measure productivity is lazy and counter productive."

I agree, if that is the only way you measure productivity. These tools create a more holistic view of what a person does at work and should not be the sole measure of performance.

In reality, what they make visible are the people who do little to nothing for 3+ days. Graphs that shows no work for long stretches make performance conversations much easier. It's tough for a poor worker to argue their way out of that or fake the metrics going forward.

kmatthews812··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
Full disclosure. I just built this for Google Workspace (www.gofasterhq.com). I built it because it's a tool I wish I had when managing teams in the past.

These articles are very one sided and there is a productive middle ground to be established using productivity management tools. As a manager, it can be difficult to know what your team is working on and who is actually productive, especially in a remote environment. Replace the word "spy" in this article with "hold accountable" and it doesn't sound so bad all of the sudden. But with that visibility, the manager also needs to understand the context in which the data is generated. Whether somebody is productive isn't only a matter of metrics, but also their role, their seniority, and what it is they are expected to do.

As an employee, these tools can benefit you by weeding out teammates who present themselves confidently, but don't actually do much. With a good manager, you should be able to simply do your job and the metrics, in context, take care of themselves.

kmatthews812··on Why I Built an AngularJS Training Site on Rails
Has anybody figured out how to add headless tests to this stack (Rails 4, AngularJS)? I've tried using Karma and Teaspoon and they both ran into problems. Karma would cause PhantomJS to crash on launch and Teaspoon could never load the asset pipeline properly, so Angular was never being included. Example links would be greatly appreciated.
