klez··on Debian 13 arrives with major updates for Linux users – what's new in 'Trixie'
I tried, but it fails at compile time and I can't be bothered to try and understand why it doesn't find a stdargs.h that is _clearly_ there. I attempted various solutions I found online for half a day, then just threw the towel and ordered a 25€ replacement from AMD which I'm told has better support than nvidia on linux anyway.
klez··on Debian 13 arrives with major updates for Linux users – what's new in 'Trixie'
One lesson I learned from this latest upgrade: DON'T SKIP READING THE DOCUMENTATION BEFORE UPGRADING.

I rebooted after upgrade and found myself dropped in a console-only environment. Turns out the (proprietary) drivers for my video card are not supported anymore. Now I'm on nouveau and it sucks.

My fault for having an Nvidia card, I guess, but an AMD equivalent is on its way.

klez··on Show HN: Pipo360 – Generate production-ready back end APIs in 60 seconds with AI
In some parts of Italy, the name will make people's inner 12-year-old giggle. It sounds like a childish name for "penis". Do what you will with this information.
klez··on Quarkdown: A modern Markdown-based typesetting system
Is this the usual anti-java sentiment or is there something in particular with java >= 17 that you have something against?
klez··on Quarkdown: A modern Markdown-based typesetting system
I can't seem to understand how their syntax is "markdown-like" in any way. All I see is some sort of declarative language surrounded by code.
klez··on Ruffle – open-source Flash player
So that's what it is! Just the other day I was visiting an old website on the wayback machine which I didn't expect to work because it was flash-based. To my surprise everything worked fine and I kept seeing those raffle logos for a second while it loaded. Looks like the internet archive is applying it automatically when it shows website containing flash animations.
klez··on GitHub issues is almost the best notebook in the world
You can automate commits and push on save. I had a similar setup for vimwiki before migrating to a web-based wiki system (dokuwiki).
klez··on GitHub issues is almost the best notebook in the world
Out of curiosity, what other solutions did you explore and why were they lacking?
klez··on Lieferando.de has captured 5.7% of restaurant related domain names
> It is a continuous process of improvement

Or, to be less charitable, a cat-and-mouse game.

klez··on Libro: a command-line tool to track your books
I think they're just telling OP that the name might generate confusion. If that's the case, I don't really agree. "Libro", as you point out, is just Italian (and Spanish, fwiw) for "book".
klez··on Using bad hardware: why I work in the terminal (2024)
When talking about Linux workflows on older devices it is always worth it to remind people of the existence of kmandla[0] and their later website Inconsolation[1]

Too bad they don't seem to publish anymore.

klez··on Teen on Musk's DOGE team graduated from 'The Com'
That's not the only thing that makes you a risk, it's just one factor they take into consideration.
klez··on A mouseless tale: trying for a keyboard-driven desktop
I suppose they just didn't want to abandon GNOME.
klez··on Why Twitter is such a big deal (2009)
Let me nitpick here. The fact that something was printed before the Bible doesn't prove that spreading the Bible was not, in fact, the primary motive to invent the printing press. It could just mean that Gutenberg went with smaller stuff first.
klez··on It's time to make computing personal again
> Everywhere you go, you can find these user- and tinkerer-hostile decisions. Linux isn't much better than Windows for the semi-casual tinkerer either - at least on Windows you don't get told to just fork the project and implement it yourself.

The obvious difference being that in Windows you can't even do that or (easily) apply a patch. Isn't this very ability to patch (or create a fork of) the kernel the opposite of being tinkerer-hostile?

klez··on Nepenthes is a tarpit to catch AI web crawlers
Not to be confused with the apparently now defunct Nepenthes malware honeypot.

I used to use it when I collected malware.

klez··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
On my work laptop I use Chrome. There are a couple of things I sorely miss from Firefox

* The omnibar: I have a couple IPs I connect to frequently. One ends in 36, the other in 243. In Firefox I can just type 36 (or 243) + Tab + Enter. In Chrome I have to type the whole address. And why can't I search for the title of a page I know is in my history or even just a tab I already have opened directly from the search bar? I do that all the time in Firefox

* Ctrl+Tab to switch back and forth between tabs instead of cycling them in order (not the default in Firefox either, but at least it can be configured without having to install an extension and a native executable as I had to do in Chrome)

klez··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
I see what you mean, but that tool allows you to take a picture of the entire vertical length of the page. You can't easily (i.e.: with one click) do that with the print screen key.
klez··on Digital gardens people maintain outside the "Big Tech" walled gardens
> that requires curation too: Who and with what criteria can add an entry etc.

IMHO that's the beauty of it. Sometimes I want to be hit with everything the web has to offer.

But some other times I do want curated lists of links organized by category with opinionated criteria for inclusion.

klez··on Ask HN: What's Your Morning Routine?
I'm an IT service manager / PM / last resource coder (on some things)

Wake up at 8.

Take the dog out (she does her business quickly, it doesn't take more than 5 minutes and then she's the one pulling to go home) and feed her.

Put the moka on the stove (the moka has been prepared the previous night), and while I wait (and then while drinking coffee and eating something sweet) play my usual list of light games (wordle, framed, strands, bandle (if the lady is up, since we play this one together, otherwise I'll wait for her to play it later)), go to the bathroom to do my business and wash up.

At 8.30 I sit at my computer to start work.

I check my mail, chats, see if there's any ticket that requires my attention, then the meetings start and the usual day of work begins.

klez··on Why did so many mid-century designers make children's books?
Off-topic, but have you noticed the website has a screensaver? I find it a nice touch.
klez··on Ghost artists on Spotify
That would be the distinction between "fine art" and "decorative art". Jazz as GP meant it is "fine art", the smooth jazz you hear in the elevator could be classified as decorative art.
klez··on Java in the Small
> since the JDK comes with the J2EE packages built-in...

Are you sure about that? I just downloaded the Java 8 JDK, and javax.json is not there. And the documentation doesn't mention it either. What am I missing?

klez··on Java in the Small
It's hidden from the newbie who never used java before, that's what we're talking about. As you said, all that stuff is done implicitly. The user never sees any of that unless they go digging.
klez··on Java in the Small
> `java hello.java` is in the 360-390 ms range.

That's still pretty negligible. I don't think he's making a strict comparison, just saying that in both cases it's barely noticeable.

klez··on Java in the Small
One of the best metal band Italy has on offer, that's what you just witnessed.

SEMICOLON!!!

klez··on Test
More likely they use CMS, since it's the news section of the site, and someone simply clicked "Publish" too soon and forgot they did.
klez··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
There's a barely-known Italian song from 2006 by Italian rapper Caparezza that deals with this exact theme. It's about a guy trying to "legally" kill his wife.

klez··on Itch.io Taken Down by Funko
Clearly I'm not a lawyer either, but isn't accusing someone of doing something that is not true and that can have legal ramification a suable behavior in the US?
klez··on The correct amount of ads is zero
How does this answer GP's claim that people who can't afford stuff are being bombarded with messages that make them feel inadequate and cause psychological damage?
