kledru··on Entropy: A little understood concept in physics [video]
we do have a word -- "negentropy". Physicists also sometimes find it easier to talk about "negentropy" instead of entropy.
kledru··on Ask HN: What's your opinion on weekly 1:1s?
regular 1-1 meetings may be necessary for those who need close supervision (juniors, newcomers) or for those who need "a form of organizational liturgy, offering them a rhythm and structure to their working lives".

They can also be "an opportunity to subtly shake up the conventional wisdom in the course of a regular corporate ceremony".

kledru··on Coinbase secures Bermuda licence
Nothing new here, but from all these years of experience, the only practical applications for crypto that I've encountered have been attempts to extort money from me, to defraud me, or to simply speculate. Future of money?
kledru··on Ask HN: Become a 10x developer with LLM? Myth? Reality?
it will be difficult because the people with potential to become 10x developers are too busy trying to stay up to date with advances in LLM technology.
kledru··on Show HN: Debate Devil – AI debating practice app
Well, it was interesting, but I think the AI judge fell for the same fallacy as the debating AI. Although the underlying model is impressive, it does not have a real grasp of the laws of the physical world. However, the model does a good job of imitating humans, so it argued from the standpoint of a common human fallacy.
kledru··on ChatGPT – The Revolutionary Bullshit Parrot
The author clearly possesses intelligence, which instills in him a confidence similar to that of ChatGPT when it comes to dismissing a tool that, for some reason, he has not yet learned to utilize effectively.
kledru··on Post-GPT Computing
The self-confidence of people who dismiss it after having tried it once is impressive. Having said that, I do not think it is the end of programmers, only some of them.
kledru··on The AI Mirror Test, which smart people keep failing
And LLMs mirror that reality...
kledru··on Software Tests Are for Millionaires (2020)
You may skip writing tests when building a prototype or experimenting with new ideas. Otherwise always write tests. I think it really is that easy.
kledru··on Noam Chomsky on ChatGPT: High-Tech Plagiarism, Way of Avoiding Learning
This seems mostly right. But ChatGPT also can make it a lot easier to learn if one wants to learn. But I think that you need to be able to critically evaluate it's output for that. And to formulate your ideas on some level. If one never obtains those skills, perhaps learning with chatGPT won't be of much use.
kledru··on The Heart of ChatGPT’s Darkness
I think some regulations should exist, and some already do. I'm not the right person to comment on U.S. regulations, but consider for example usage of bots in healthcare. U.S. already has regulations like Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and I do not think it is legal to use chatGPT for making clinical decisions.
kledru··on Ask HN: Are you tired of reading ChatGPT headlines?
you should split your team to three subteams for more efficient communication and replace the cto with a chatbot
kledru··on Ask HN: Are you tired of reading ChatGPT headlines?
well, the soulless articles really aren't the use-case I'm interested in and the release of chatGPT already changed the way I work as software engineer. So, not all scam. I hope to have a tool like this still at hand in the future.
kledru··on ChatGPT: The Slickest Con Artist of All Time
It has been a very good tool for me and it does threaten the internet with new piles of generated garbage.

I've never had a tool as helpful for learning to use other (mostly software) tools. Building new ones to some extent. Other tools exist that are not for me -- I consider myself to be too absent-minded to drive something as dangerous as an automobile. It could very well be that a tool like ChatGPT is not for everyone -- if you are too gullible to use Google or social media, then this one is not for you, you should not get the driving licence for LLMs.

The proliferation of garbage on the other hand may turn against more competent users as well eventually. I guess we have already falling behind of what is needed with the legal norms and internet/data ecology.

kledru··on Ask HN: Are you as passionate as you used to be?
Ups and downs are normal. But I suspect there might be general apathy in society ("long covid" kind). Maybe that's only my country. I'm over 40 and most of the younger software engineers I work with do not seem enthusiastic about anything at the moment. Could be an illusion of the brave new era of remote work.

I find the ongoings of the IT world very interesting at the moment and think if I should get myself fired to play with all the new tools and ideas they induce. Not optimistic about the prospects of the society in general, but it has never been as interesting in IT...

kledru··on Take more screenshots (2022)
While images might last longer than some other files in terms of compatibility, the most durable and flexible format is still plain text. So if what you want is to preserve your ideas, try writing.
kledru··on The Low Energy Trap
If we are to produce vastly more energy, much more heat waste will need to leave Earth. Will be a problem.
kledru··on The climate impact of wild pigs greater than a million cars
The study is actually titled "Unrecognized threat to global soil carbon by a widespread invasive species". So perhaps they aren't part of the equilibrium on some continents. The title of the news item is silly though as if suggesting that we should kill off the whole species and build another million of cars.
