klaussilveira··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
Fonts are crispy in some areas, blurry in others.
klaussilveira··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
This is why I come here every day. Bravo.
klaussilveira··on Neki – Sharded Postgres
How does it deal with big tables (8B+ rows)? Does it split the table onto multiple shards or each shard only gets full tables?
klaussilveira··on Getting phpBB 1.4.4 working in Docker
XOOPS!
klaussilveira··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
I encourage everyone to switch to Forgejo. We ditched GitHub and could not be happier. The experience is smoother, faster and distraction-free.

Our runners are faster, our CI is smoother than ever. Transitioning was a matter of a few hours, which we took as a fun hackaton.

klaussilveira··on KisakCOD – Open-source reimplementation of Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer
Reverse-engineering from PDBs, working on top of a GPL codebase. COD4 is built on id tech.

klaussilveira··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
Whenever I don't know something, I ask it for a tutorial, programming-magazine style. Then I just follow the tutorial.
klaussilveira··on Why developers are ditching GitHub for Codeberg and self-hosting alternatives
We ditched GitHub for self-hosted Forgejo and could not be happier. The experience is smoother, faster and distraction-free.
klaussilveira··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software

klaussilveira··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software
The only possible good Microsoft could do, in order to salvage their relationship with id software fans, would be to honor Carmack's legacy and release the RAGE engine (id tech 5) as open source. A lot of it was already released in the Doom 3 BFG release, might as well do the whole thing.
klaussilveira··on Shadcn/UI now defaults to Base UI instead of Radix
I miss a good old skeuomorphic styleguide. I guess the last one was Blueprint?
klaussilveira··on Linux for the Sega MegaDrive
> CRTs at thrift stores for maybe like 50 bucks

I haven't seen a CRT in South Florida thrift stores in years. And when you find something on FB or other marketplaces, people want $200+

klaussilveira··on Linux for the Sega MegaDrive
Where is that gold mine?
klaussilveira··on Looking Ahead to Postgres 19
Oh my, finally a reason to upgrade from 16.
klaussilveira··on Bohemia Interactive: Cold War Assault Remastered Source Code on GitHub
Not only Bohemia Interactive released the code, they cleaned it up and ported to Windows x64 and Linux x64. That's amazing.
klaussilveira··on Show HN: Criterion Closet as a website – pull any of 1,247 films off the shelf
The text really needs some better rendering technique. It is very hard to read. Have you considered Slug https://github.com/EricLengyel/Slug ?
klaussilveira··on Godot 4.7 Release
Godot has left Unity eating dust. Wonderful to see all the hard work from contributors paying off. Congrats!
klaussilveira··on French-Iranian author Marjane Satrapi, author of 'Persepolis', dies at 56

klaussilveira··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
It bothers me that SMACSS is from 2011 and was completely ignored. That was the sane way to write CSS. Been doing that for more than 10 years and never had issues redesigning large applications.

klaussilveira··on Explore Wikipedia Like a Windows XP Desktop
CHM files were great, it actually made documenting enjoyable. I miss those days.
klaussilveira··on DeepClaude – Claude Code agent loop with DeepSeek V4 Pro
Damn, we need something like this for Ollama.
klaussilveira··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
How much VRAM do you need to achieve decent performance?
klaussilveira··on GCC 16 has been released
libstd has been giving me issues running gcc 16 binaries on Debian 12 and 13.
klaussilveira··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
I don't think it is dramatic. I felt a similar sadness around this subject. It's the meaning behind it: the hacker spirit, the naive curiosity, the juveline freedom, being destroyed by the corporate machine. It is a small metaphor that hits all of us in different spots.

And boy, does it hurt.

klaussilveira··on PHP 8.6 Closure Optimizations
I have a few:

- Batteries included, everything you need out of the box. No need to npm install left-pad

- Optional, per-file strict types, without the need to transpile from another language

- No need to build anything, lightning fast scripting language

- Is its own HTML templating language (or XML), no need for JSX

- No supply-chain fiascos, stable and mature ecosystem

klaussilveira··on The Old Internet Is Still Here
Sometimes I feel like bringing back directories. Small, curated lists of interesting websites and blogs for certain topics.
klaussilveira··on rpg.actor Game Jam
The fact that the first prize is a mint copy of RPG Maker 2000 brings me fuzzy feelings. So many good memories of that community. The projects, the friendship, talents being discovered and experimented with. The Quake and RPG Maker community had a profound impact on who I am today and it's awesome to see other people that still appreciate it.
klaussilveira··on Palm OS User Interface Guidelines (2003) [pdf]
I wouldn't use modern Windows as a good reference in user interface and user experience. If anything, is an experiment in user hostility.
klaussilveira··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
Interesting how this matches the Matrix timeline. According to Agent Smith, 1999 represented the height of human civilization before things started to decline.

Not only 1999 prevents humans from becoming too advanced and invent new AI again, it is a believable and comfortable era. A perfect time, perfectly balanced between analog and digital.
