klaussilveira··on Ly – A lightweight TUI (ncurses-like) display manager for Linux and BSD
I'm using this just because of the Doom animation. It's just too (zero)cool to start the day as if it was a scene from the Hackers movie.

But how are you going to circumvent the user firewall? He still has to open ports there, even using STUN or Steam Relay or Hamachi.

That's a pretty good way to put it.

klaussilveira··on How Quake.exe got its TCP/IP stack
Andre Lamothe's "Tricks of the 3d Game Programming Gurus: Advanced 3d Graphics and Rasterization" is a great book for anyone interested in graphics programming from those days.

He most definitely is cooking something. Seen contributions from him to chocolate-quake: https://github.com/Henrique194/chocolate-quake/pull/60

As well as bug reports: https://github.com/Henrique194/chocolate-quake/issues/57

I personally would love to get some help with my chocolate Doom 3 BFG fork, specially with pesky OpenGL issues: https://github.com/klaussilveira/chocolate-doom3-bfg

You can kinda solve that problem with STUN servers. Most games on Steam use Steam Datagram Relay, which also solves this: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/multiplayer/stea...

It's like in-engine Hamachi. Works really well with P2P games.

klaussilveira··on How I wrote the fastest Blender exporter and so could you!
Been waiting for this post since I saw your tweet on it, Taha. Really impressive work. I'm currently working on a similar setup for U3D, so we can ditch the editor and focus on the engine itself.

It's a shame Blender doesn't support C++ plugins natively, without having to do a custom build.

klaussilveira··on Microsoft confirms Windows 11 is about to change
Same experience here. Couple with one of the Redmond themes, and all of a sudden everything looks similar: https://github.com/B00merang-Project/Redmond-Themes

Just works.

klaussilveira··on 'AI' Sucks the Joy Out of Programming
I feel the complete opposite: AI sucked the boring out of programming. I don't have to write boring boilerplate anymore. I don't have to crawl for hours over terrible documentation just to get a library to spit something out. I can quickly iterate on any idea and realize it's a bad one and pivot. I can create benchmark comparison code in seconds and go for the best result. I don't have to write release notes, or write OpenAPI examples.

I get to do all the fun stuff. It's amazing.

klaussilveira··on Rust cross-platform GPUI components
Sad to see that the C++ community is sleeping on this. There are no modern GUI components or toolkits, specially under such a permissive license.

Excited about the future of Rust GUI development, this is fantastic.

klaussilveira··on Mesh2Motion – Open-source web application to animate 3D models
What algorithm is it using for applying weights? Blender uses automatic bone heat weighting, but sometimes it can fail.

There's an open-source plugin that does surface-based heat diffusion and also this really clever voxel solution: https://superhivemarket.com/products/voxel-heat-diffuse-skin...

klaussilveira··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
This is one of the things I miss the most about hacker conferences. The sharing of tools, scripts, tips and tricks. It was, and still is, just as fun as trading cards.

klaussilveira··on rlsw – Raylib software OpenGL renderer in less than 5k LOC
Oh, man! This is really cool. Do you maintain a blog or a patreon that allows people to follow the progress on the project?

Any way I can buy you a beer?

klaussilveira··on The MacBook Air 2025 Is Now Cheaper Than a Random Mid-Range Windows Laptop
I would have to disagree. Since Windows 11 rolled out, calls from family have increased. This is not the usual "where is my printer", but basic stuff: "where are my files", "why can't i find the backup drive", "where is my computer", followed by "why do they change stuff".

Microsoft seems to insist on alienating a whole generation of computer users. I expect that this next Christmas I'll be doing a lot of Vista or 7 installations.

klaussilveira··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
That limits to only 2 selections. If I keep pressing Alt + S, it does not select multiple instances of the first selection.

Also, I can't immediately start typing like in Sublime to replace the content. For example:

"test/filenameA.c"

"test/filenameB.c"

"test/filenameC.c"

"test/filenameD.c"

If I select test/ with the cursor, then A-s, it won't select 3 and 4. If I do this, however:

C-d = ["search_selection", "extend_search_next"]

It does select test/, in all 4 lines, but I can't immediately type "blah" to change test to blah.

klaussilveira··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
Does not work on Linux. Also, double-clicking to expand selection like in Sublime does not work.

https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/discussions/10208

klaussilveira··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
> requires manual construction from a sequence of commands

Right, I saw some people share some snippets here before. But none of them act like Sublime does. I can't double-click a token and Ctrl + D to select next instances of it in my file.

klaussilveira··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
Helix still has no way to emulate Sublime's Ctrl + Click (placing multiple carets), nor Sublime's Ctrl + D (duplicating selections and creating a multiple caret for each)?

Keystroke dynamics and mouse movement analysis are pretty fun ways to tackle more advanced bots: https://research.roundtable.ai/proof-of-human/

But of course, it is a game of cat and mouse and there are ways to simulate it.

klaussilveira··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2025)
After that Deus Ex remaster fiasco, I wanted to see how the famous Unreal 1 dithering technique would look on Quake's software renderer. Getting a clean build of it on Linux was fun in itself: https://github.com/klaussilveira/exp-quake

I can't take much credit for anything really, all of the meat came from Tim Sweeney himself: https://www.flipcode.com/archives/Texturing_As_In_Unreal.sht...

I miss the golden days of flipcode.

klaussilveira··on My Deus Ex lipsyncing fix mod
Revision is much better than this and it was made by fans: https://store.steampowered.com/app/397550/Deus_Ex_Revision/

Given this "remaster" by Aspyr, I'm glad Nightdive exists.
