klakierr··on Ask HN: Surge of 800x600 desktop resolution since May 2025
looks like all the other resolution started to decrease so probably its the same devices but hiding the resolution. maybe some privacy feature for some Asian countries was introduced back then?

klakierr··on Show HN: Open-source Counter-Strike-like game
Also discovered BAR couple of weeks ago and even though I'm not really a gamer anymore, and was never really into rts games, I've already have > 50 in game hours

I was very impressed with the level of detail and meticulous implementation. The level of control and posible automation is high, I feel that it should reasonate with most tech oriented ppl

If anyone wants to play my in game username is [ZWD]_jaan, just add me as a friend and I can intro you to the basic concepts (im still a noob tho), we can play a coop game or find a noob lobby :)

Have you tried Llms for translation? Much, much cheaper, and in my experience as good as deepl
klakierr··on Ask HN: Who's building an AI-free product?
TBH not really, although it would be really easy. I'd open source it if the code would not be an absolute mess
klakierr··on Ask HN: Who's building an AI-free product?

Free version of duolingo's match madness using top 1000 most frequently used Spanish words. I actually like the competing with others gamification, not so much streaks etc. Made it mostly for myself, as a way to procrastinate instead of actually learning spanish

klakierr··on Ask HN: Why can't ChatGPT solve Wordle-type questions?
Wow I love this explanation. Are there any resources that explain LLMs in such accesible and easy to understand way?
klakierr··on Ask HN: What's the best SaaS starter kit for indie makers?
aren't you a founder of one? :)

what is the real goal of this post? gauge the market? somehow funnel to your thing? (honestly curious)

//edit I see you already used another account to answer yourself with recommendation of your product

IDK if the solopreneur thing has intensified so much recently, but almost every time I see a thread like that, here or on reddit, it's posted by the creator of the tool and he somehow tries to sneak his product in

for anyone browsing for a starter kit I recommend laravel with a starter kit and laravel stripe package: https://laravel.com/docs/10.x/starter-kits + https://laravel.com/docs/10.x/billing

klakierr··on Show HN: An open-source, self-hostable synced narration platform for ebooks
This works only for drm-free ebooks and audiobooks?
klakierr··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I've built a cli tool to insert translations into an ebook file, converting a standard ebook into a bilingual ebook. I wanted to learn Spanish, and all other learning methods were too boring.

I've made a lot of progress with my Spanish this way (it's fun), so I started to build a language learning app based on the idea, but then decided I do not want to build language learning app, so instead I just added a web UI layer over the tool:

https://bilingualebooks.net

I've just finished it. If you want to use it, note that only DRM-free epub ebooks are supported. Since it's tough to find DRM-free ebooks, especially in foreign languages, I've included a section in the FAQ on where to find them.

klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
All the other comments: I've sent you an email with access link & info. Thanks for the interest and sorry it took me a whole week to get back to you!
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
I don't
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
ATM there is basically no landing page, and without beta user code you wont be able to use the app
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
Theoretically any language that ChatGPT "speaks" is supported, but the more popular language the better quality of inserted translations.
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
Yes, mechanical. It's a copyright issue, I cannot offer translated books, so each user upload will get separate generated and inserted translations. Obviously the quality is not the best compared to professional translations. For that you can try beelinguapp.com or lingq.com, both mentioned in this thread. What's different in my app is that it inserts translations in the text, so no additional clicking, and it allows you to upload your own books.

I've tried using LibreTranslate, GoogleTranslate, DeepL, ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 for translations - in my experience ChatGPT is the best for this use case, 3.5 is good enough and economically viable, 4 is superior, especially if you want translation in a language different than English, but expensive compared to 3.5: ~$20 for a book.

klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
I'm familiar with it, it's great. It's a bit different interface-wise, they do not insert translations intro text, you have to click on words to translate them
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
Hi, yes I tried, it's great. They do not let you upload your own books though, and for me (as an user) it is important
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
wow, thanks a ton, I will contact you when I'll be adding books directly to the app; ATM I just have the option to upload a book for the users
klakierr··on Ask HN: Any alternatives to Duolingo without gamification?
Not exactly Duolingo alternative, but: I'm currently building an an app for language learning by reading books. It takes an (your) ebook and inserts translations:

—Arthur —dijo con tono cortante, ["Arthur," he said sharply.] y su voz sonó como el chasquido de una ratonera—, [and his voice sounded like the click of a mousetrap.]

There is zero gamification, as it's not needed - you're motivated by the pleasure of reading.

It won't help you to learn to speak (there is an option to read aloud a selected phrase though), but it will help you with vocabulary. I went with it from not being able to read even one page, to being able to understand 70% of a book (intermediate Spanish level) in about a month.

ATM looking for beta users, completely free of charge. Pls leave a contact in a comment if you're interested

klakierr··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
Yeah I intend to offer different translation options and be transparent with pricing
klakierr··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
An app for language learning by reading books in the target language. It takes the book (any epub book) in the target language add inserts translations:

—Arthur —dijo con tono cortante, ["Arthur," he said sharply.] y su voz sonó como el chasquido de una ratonera—, [and his voice sounded like the click of a mousetrap.]

All of the existing apps that I checked only display translation upon clicking a word (like in Kindle), but that 1) doesn't work well when you're only starting to learn; 2) takes too much from the reading experience, and becomes a chore. Also, most of them only allow a limited selection of books.

I'm using it myself for over a month now, and enjoy reading with it a lot. I feel almost no friction using it, it's the usual pleasure of reading a book with added exploration of a new language.

The problems:

Translating can be hard or / and expensive. Cheaper / free translations are often incorrect, and struggle with idioms. DeepL would cost > 20€ for a long book. ChatGPT hallucinates, and adds to the original. I'm using Google Translate for now and it's good enough for me, but I don't feel it's good enough to charge for. It often mixes genders (as opposed to ChatGPT which can deduct them from context I guess), and occasionally mistranslates.

Would you want to use such app even with the often erroneous automated translations?

klakierr··on Ask HN: Why are crypto companies and EA writer-hungry?
Would you mind sharing what's your company? I'm looking for good crypto companies to apply to. I'm a backed SWE with 6 years of exp in total, and one year of exp in "crypto"
klakierr··on Ask HN: SWE who started an organic farm in Europe, where did you go?
About 5 years ago I was looking for a rural płot of land in southern Portugal (Algarve), but it was too expensive for me (I wasn't earning much back then though)

Now I'm starting to look again. Greece seems to have very cheap land, on various islands you could even get a płot for with a sea view for less than 50k€
