kjax··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I did the same thing, albeit with some printed labels in the same corner on each, so that it's easy to flip through them when they're stacked together. Has saved me dozens of minutes over the years!
kjax··on PostgreSQL 17
After scanning the Azure and AWS pricing pages and calculators for comparably speced Azure Manged SQL and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL instances, AWS's RDS comes out at about 1/3 the price of Azure Managed SQL.

This matches my experience with deployments on AWS and Azure. Both are managed db instances, but Azure's is consistently more expensive for comparable offerings on AWS or GCP.

kjax··on Official requests to ban selling Atomic Heart game
Having played the game a bit, its primary theme appears to be the fictional USSR imploding from its own hubris.
kjax··on We need a lot more electricians
Hello, Federal Pioneer 15A Stab-Lok blue breakers (old style, without the holes) here. I can personally confirm their potential for not tripping when overloaded, along with the smouldering outcome...
kjax··on Baby was sent home from ER twice, suffered brain damage
Indeed. Let the child decide for itself, when it's old enough to do so.
kjax··on Indoor air filtration could lead to increased airborne endotoxin levels (2020)
Can someone with access to the article comment on the researchers' findings for how long new HEPA filters typically last, before they start emitting nontrivial quantities of endotoxins?
kjax··on John Yudkin: the man who tried to warn us about sugar in 1972 (2014)
Ask HN: Are there any noteworthy researchers who have been similarly shunned for their contrarian-yet-sound scientific proclamations in recent decades?
kjax··on Reddit raises $410M in new funding
There's another big factor with mobile app users: it's much harder to block ads in a mobile app.
kjax··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
I'm the opposite. Had the Embody for years, but it slowly started to deform (long torso with lots of reclining) and cause back pain. I've since switched to an Aeron C, and after a few months, I'm back to lifting like I used to.
kjax··on No safe level of alcohol for brain health: observational cohort study [pdf]
Heineken's domestic formula differs from the export formula (primarily due to the amount of hops added to the export formula, IIRC), which is covered on the tour. The domestic Heineken really is much better than the stuff we get in North America.
kjax··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
The assumption that small businesses would see a drop in marketing efficiency might assume that advertising costs on Facebook remain constant. In a perfect world, I would think that a reduction in ROAS on Facebook would precipitate a decrease in ad costs, as businesses would be less willing to pay a premium for Facebook ads.

In the long term, I think Facebook is the biggest loser in this scenario, not the small businesses.

kjax··on Firefox 84.0
Crash logging and reporting in the developer console's network tab is a welcome addition.

It might be due to my combination of browser settings and add-ons, but I've found the Firefox developer console to be less than perfectly stable.

kjax··on AMD Threadripper 3990X 64-Core beats dual Xeon Platinum 8280 in benchmark leak
I did this for my 3950x, and it works well. The temps on the CPU still spike up quickly and generate a bit of fan noise under brief loads, but apparently that's quite standard for this platform.
kjax··on How to Use Facebook Ads in the Search for a Missing Person
It's commonly used in clickbait headlines. If you're using an ad account that Facebook doesn't consider very trustworthy, you'll have a difficult time getting ads with certain attention-grabbing words approved.
kjax··on Sqlfmt: an opinionated online SQL formatter
I see it as people reacting to the tendency for software and source code to get quite messy or complex as the number of developers involved grows, more so than one would expect from the result of an increased feature set alone.

Specific (or opinionated) design, interfaces, or formatting feels like an early declaration that the people in charge want to deliberately restrict an aspect of the software, in order to keep things consistent and reduce cognitive load during use or development. Constraints are freedom, and all of that.

kjax··on SQLite – The “server-process-edition” branch
It sure is. After recently porting a large application from SQLite to Postgres, much of my time was spent casting types and ensuring code was updated to input the correct types into Postgres. All in all, the changes were for the better, as many bugs were discovered and resolved in the process.
kjax··on I’m Nat Friedman, Future CEO of GitHub. AMA
WASM might help make them a lot more performant, and I think online editors could be a place where it really shines.
kjax··on Two Canadian banks say accounts compromised: CIBC 40,000 and BMO 50,000
That beats the heck out of a certain Canadian credit union that has a numerical password with a length limit of 7 digits...
kjax··on Please Stop Using Adblock (But Not Why You Think)
I personally consider a native platform's shadiness by a mix of the kind of content they allow, the kind of content that ends up on there, and the amount of fraudulent traffic/clicks that advertisers get billed for.

Taboola and Outbrain at least have manual reviewers attempting to uphold a certain standard for content, though there is a ton of room for improvement. I've never noticed a lot of suspect traffic coming from these two, which is in stark contrast to networks like content.ad or adblade. Of course, Outbrain/Taboola don't compare to the big networks, but I've experienced a good balance of affordable and reasonable quality traffic, though this isn't always the case, as costs/quality can be quite variable over time.

kjax··on Please Stop Using Adblock (But Not Why You Think)
Taboola is generally known to be one of the less-shady ad platforms, amusingly enough. The fact you consider it to be particularly egregious, which I don't really disagree with, seems to reflect the state of affairs in the online advertising industry.
kjax··on Yelp Wi-Fi
guerrillamail and mailhero have worked for me.
kjax··on Ask HN: What is your experience with 'doing something' daily challenges?
I was interested in reading more about your Burpee habit, but the email signup form was getting a bit obnoxious. When I scrolled down, the sticky header for the subscription box had the "X" offset under the scrollbar, making it tough to hide (Nexus 6P), and successive pages repeated the experience.
kjax··on Ask HN: What is your experience with 'doing something' daily challenges?
This really resonated. I wish I knew a term for "everything is just fine (objectively great, even), but I couldn't care less."
kjax··on New XPS 13 Developer Edition Lands in Europe, United States and Canada
Did a fairly standard install of Lubuntu 16.04 + full disk encryption, and I seem to get about 10 hours (i5, 8GB, 128GB). I'll have to try powertop and see if that changes anything.
kjax··on A Silent Cause of Bad Business Decisions
To paraphrase the late Andy Grove, it's mostly about understanding your subordinates and selecting the optimal approach.
kjax··on PayPal? No way
The company I work for supports a ton of payment processor integrations, and Central and South America are always a bit rough for coverage. Depending on your country, Credomatic or Paguelofacil might work?
kjax··on My Most Important Project Was a Bytecode Interpreter
Lexer generators typically allow describing rules with regular expressions, but through Thompson's construction, subset construction, and DFA minimization, you can end up with a blazing fast/optimized DFA that processes your input at maximum speed.
kjax··on Google Takes on Uber with New Ride-Share Service
In BC, at least, liquor servers have a lower minimum wage than the norm, as they're "expected" to make up the difference with tips.
kjax··on Amazon launches Prime Air, its own dedicated cargo planes to speed delivery
There are some new e readers which do both ePub and PDF. A quick search turned up a few like the Nook GlowLight+, and a couple Kobos. Amazon's offerings don't do native ePub, but they (and others) make it trivial to email or upload an ePub and convert it to mobi and deliver to your device.

I can relate with the sentiment on paper books though. It's quite great being able to quickly flip back and forth to several places, or place notes throughout. I've had luck with the highlighting feature on my Kindle, which gives a decent interface for going back and looking at all the things I've highlighted; I've developed the habit of highlighting all the important parts in a book and going back and re-reading just the highlighted bits, which has helped tremendously. Unfortunately, highlighting across pages is rather aggravating.

kjax··on Linode’s 13th Birthday
Their DDOS was so bad that we had to migrate all of our servers from Linode to Google, which wasn't particularly fun during the weeks of intermittent connectivity. I think it was on the order of weeks, rather than days.
