kjakm··on National Geographic now recognizes The Southern Ocean
Could somebody who understands this stuff explain it for me?

I'm pretty sure I've heard of the Southern Ocean before. It also seems a little fishy that this is being heavily promoted by the magazine that (presumably) these 'Nat Geo cartographers' work for.

Is this a PR stunt? Is there an official body that classifies oceans?

Edit:

I guess this bit of the article explains it. There is no new ocean, it's been recognised for a while.

"'The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it,' says National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait. "

kjakm··on Vivaldi 4.0
I hadn't even thought of tab tiling as a feature I might need until now. Just took a look and seems incredibly useful!
kjakm··on Data portability, the forgotten right of GDPR
I remember trying that with an old account a few years ago (suggesting your solution of just hiding the username) and was denied. Maybe things have changed since then though.
kjakm··on Solved by 1440p HiDPI: MacBook Pro 16“ is hot and noisy with an external monitor
Have a scan through the homepage. I often find the same few people posting broad questions over and over again to generate engagement. On top of that I feel most of the article titles tend to be click bait. I have come across one or two really good articles but they are very much the exception.
kjakm··on How the UK's online safety bill threatens Matrix
A US company can be compliant. They just have to host EU user data in the EU.
kjakm··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
The latest version of iOS/HomeKit has 'adaptive lighting'. You select that colour option and it will modify the temperature automatically throughout the day. You have very little manual control over it but sounds like what you might be looking for.
kjakm··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
A fair opinion to have. I feel every HN thread on crypto now though dissolves to negativity (without any substance) + toxicity really quickly.
kjakm··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
As someone with no real opinion on crypto the arrogant stupidity of the anti-crypto crowd (really prevalent on HN) is also quite tiring.

NB: Apple Maps also has a dedicated Mac app.
kjakm··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
They aren’t marketing it to AirPods. They’re marketing the spatial audio for the AirPods. They even call out that for the highest quality lossless you need a DAC.
kjakm··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
Some sort of computerised/automated conversion process would be awful given the mix has such an important artistic role in the song.

Maybe, in the same way we've seen artists go back and remaster entire collections, we will see them do something similar for atoms?

kjakm··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
Wouldn't that also apply to mono v stereo? I would guess that if you had one earphone in, they would fallback to a mono/stereo mix. It kinda works like that currently with AirPods. If you take out one, instead of only getting one channel through the remaining AirPod, you get both channels diverted to the one AirPod.
kjakm··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
With the AirPods + Apple TV content spatial audio makes it sound like the audio is coming through more than just the two channels. It's much more natural sounding that stereo in headphones.
kjakm··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
If you're interested in what this might sound like (spatial audio) the announcement video uses it. To watch it you need to be using your iOS device + AirPods:

kjakm··on Ask HN: What lessons did you learn from your best or worst colleagues?
Agreed, I thought that was implied in my comment but reading back it isn’t.

I disagree that going above your boss first would lead to getting fired though (again with the exception of at will employment).

kjakm··on Ask HN: What lessons did you learn from your best or worst colleagues?
I find this attitude to be the same as kids not telling on the bully because it’ll make things worse. The guy lost a four figure bonus for no sane reason. Keeping quiet isn’t going to make anything better. You either speak with HR or firstly maybe your boss’s boss. Maybe things are a bit different if you work in one of the places where you can be fired at will but generally you have employment rights that will protect you.
kjakm··on Apple Robbed the Mob’s Bank
I find it hard to believe that people can complain about the _concept_ of ATT with a straight face. All that is being asked of you is that you ask the user for permission to track them. If you genuinely have an issue with that you need to reevaluate your business + your ethics.

>> How can you not talk about politics at work?

In my experience politics, religion, and money are all generally regarded as off topic among anyone but close friends and family. Unless any of the three specifically effect your business directly (or a member of staff is being illegally discriminated against because of their personal beliefs) I don’t see how you feel like you can’t work without discussing them.

Are there limits to this? Law enforcement for example? A company having your full browsing history sounds like a privacy nightmare.

kjakm··on Why Lichess will always be free
Although the GDPR is an EU Regulation it is incorporated into UK law and that hasn't changed since Brexit.

kjakm··on US owners find greed doesn't play well in European soccer
I think it’s because the tournament style was supposed to be similar to American sports.
kjakm··on India’s second wave
It's not exactly under control in the west yet either. Mainland Europe seems to be going through a pretty serious third wave.
kjakm··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
Could you explain some of the risks you see? The service is run by the NHS (national health service) and materials are posted back in sealed containers + fixed in a box. The chance of the materials coming into contact with a postman are minuscule. He could jump on the package and it would likely stay in tact.
kjakm··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
Maybe this will change post-Covid? In my city (not-US) you can order an STD test kit online, provide a small blood sample (pin prick and then fill small tube from finger) + urine sample, post it back (free), and get the results texted back to you (or on your online account) in a few days. It's 100% free. Maybe governments will see more value in catching these things and stopping them before they spread further.
kjakm··on The End of Hygiene Theater
I wouldn't describe it as theatre. It's more an abundance of caution while we deal with something new and dangerous. Thats totally sensible. There's no real benefit in jumping the gun and getting it wrong, particularly when washing your hands and wiping down surfaces is a minor inconvenience.
kjakm··on Spotify continues to remove Joe Rogan episodes
I left off the next sentence specifically because it’s pure speculation on the point of the author who seems to have zero inside knowledge.
kjakm··on Flight incident: Passengers titled ‘Miss’ counted as children [pdf]
I may have been wrong. Apparently it varies by country but in the UK Master is a male < 18 and in the US < 12. I have had it used in relation to myself though when I was in my 20’s so convention around it seems a bit unclear.
kjakm··on Flight incident: Passengers titled ‘Miss’ counted as children [pdf]
Interesting! I've come across it in so few places in my life (and not recently) so I wasn't aware.

Edit:

It seems using it until the age of 12 is a convention in the US. Using it until 18 is the convention in the UK. Another argument for why software shouldn't make decisions using terms that can mean different things to different people :)

kjakm··on Flight incident: Passengers titled ‘Miss’ counted as children [pdf]
Unmarried men occasionally get the title 'Master' although I've only come across that in more formal situations.

I also never said we should or shouldn't use the terms. I don't have an opinion on that and it's not a debate or argument I'm going to waste my time on. I was simply explaining how they are conventionally used. This kind of thing was taught in schools as recently as 20 years ago as part of explanations on how to write and format letters.
