kitx··on ChatGPT Atlas
ChatGPT on macOS isn't built with Electron, at least the last time I checked. Just checking the linked frameworks shows that it links against macOS AppKit and the Swift libraries.

From a user perspective can definitely tell too, it's a polished, fast desktop app and has all the UI details one would expect from a native app.

kitx··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
One can imagine that resolving this will require a separate model to construct a timeline/keyframe series from a text description then interpolate between them.

Fascinating times, either way this is allegedly being open–sourced, so I'm hopeful others will be able to build on top.

kitx··on Quit Your Job
Such a wonderful read. Think of childhood or teenage years when you spent hours building things for the sheer joy of it, profit motive be damned. More of us could do with sabbaticals to explore projects like this as an adult. Build out in the open, perhaps it will work, maybe it won’t. But you’ll learn a vast amount, have fun along the way, and probably learn what you should be doing instead.

Bookmarked, because I know I’m going to have to re-read this.

kitx··on Nova by Panic
Crash reporting, formerly Hockey App but when acquired by Microsoft it became part of App Center.
kitx··on What happens when a city bans cars from its streets?
Pontevedra is mentioned in the fifth paragraph, but unfortunately not much detail is given.
kitx··on Ask HN: Recommend one book I need to read this summer?
An excellent book. David Deutsch is a talented writer and this is one of those books that shifts the way you look at the world.
kitx··on Google’s painful Gmail OAuth verification process
IMAP can be awkward with sync, pagination and has never played great with labels vs folders. JMAP looks promising.
kitx··on Google Exposed User Data, Feared Repercussions of Disclosing to Public
Appears that (wording is somewhat vague) apps which only store user data on the device do not need to go through this external security assessment.

Agree that this is Google pushing their security costs onto developers and effectively killing bootstrapped SAAS apps.

kitx··on The Subscription App Paradox
Think the fairest model is one where you pay once for the app, updates are free for a set period of time, then you have to pay again to upgrade if you wish to. If not, the old version is yours indefinitely.

Well aware that the App Stores do not offer this option, but it is possible if you implement your own billing system on macOS or Windows.

kitx··on Ask HN: In the next 5 years which markets will grow the most and why?
Second this. As pointed out elsewhere in this thread, billions of people are going to come online over the next five to ten years. If (according to the World Economic Forum: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/05/2-billion-people-worl...) there are really 2 billion people unbanked, we stand to see cryptocurrencies and cell phones lead to an explosion of people connected to the financial system.
kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
I would love to post it on Product Hunt. I just don't have posting privileges on there yet.
kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
Yes, indeed a bug. Thanks for the headsup, I'm on it.
kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
Sure. A significant amount of people like having their entire inbox locally downloaded (and seemingly more common in the tech industry) but there's also a lot of people that keep it all in the cloud.
kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
Nope, I'm just a fan of the Beatles.

I don't know about assigned addresses, but for a long time Apple has used an imaginary John Appleseed.

kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
Yep, I realise that 'Absolutely free' is a bad choice of words and I will amend. Thanks for the feedback
kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
I would gladly support Inbox, but I can't currently link to a specific thread in Inbox, so clicking a notification would just dump you at the inbox of your email account.

Behind the scenes, it looks to me like Inbox is a new GUI on top of the same Gmail backend, so if the thread linking was fixed this certainly looks possible.

kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
There is no use of IMAP, it's using the Gmail API. It does poll the Gmail API frequently which is currently the recommended method of checking for new email according to Google.

I know at some point they will switch to PubSubHubbub as the preferred way to get notifications.

kitx··on Show HN: Aura, Native OS X Notifications for Gmail and Google Apps
My reasoning was that most people only have one email account and thus would be fine with the free version.

As to why in-app purchase, I wanted people to be able to use it first without payment. In-app purchase has been growing in popularity on the App Stores lately and I think this is why. I also feel it's cleaner not to have two separate versions on the App Store.

But thanks for the feedback, I guess you're right. It's misleading to call it free. I will amend the landing page to make it clearer.

Happy to answer any questions, this has been a little side project of mine with Swift and Google's Gmail API.
kitx··on Show HN: CSS3 animation
Firstly, this is fantastic. Really beautiful work and you've reframed what I thought was possible with CSS animations.

The CSS is remarkably economical and I notice that you aren't using any javascript libraries other than jQuery.

Can you share how you keyframed and timed the animation work? Laying these out by hand must be an exercise in tedium? In particular I'm talking about scenes.css which is where the bulk of the animation happens (https://github.com/podrivo/thegoodman/blob/master/files/scen...).

kitx··on Foreign Language Learning Hacks
Not a bad list, but I've never understood the reasoning behind frequency word lists. The 5,000 most common words in a new language are the ones that I need to worry about least, simply because I'm going to be encountering them so frequently.

For the record, I've found that very little can match forcing yourself to speak your target language with native speakers. Back this up with studying vocabularly and grammar on your own. Hard work, but incredibly effective.
