kitcar··on Children of the Yuan Percent: Everyone Hates China's Rich Kids
For what its worth, a billionaire once told me the following quote: There are two types of people that give money to charity - those that want to, and those that have to

(the context of the conversation was the idea of charity as atonement for sins)

kitcar··on John Carmack on Developing the Netflix App for Oculus
I believe the use case is when you don't have the alternative of a TV, i.e. Airplane, Train, etc... not ideal for streaming content though.
kitcar··on The Story of Oculus Rift
Don't forget you're using a Dev Kit which is basically 2 years old - personally, although I agree with your DK2 assessment, I am reserving judgement for the consumer version.
kitcar··on Web image size prediction for efficient focused image crawling
Can't use just look at the http response to get the image size in KB, and ignores the images below a certain size, or alternatively just grab the first few bytes of the image, enough to extract the format header (which I believe carries dimension/size info commonly?)
kitcar··on Tesla Announces $500M Common Stock Offering
Once a stock is trading on the stock market, buying the products of a company is a better way to support them then buying their stock IMHO.

When you buy Tesla stock on the stock market Tesla gets no money from you - you are actually buying the stock from another entity independent from Tesla. Tesla only receives money when the stock is sold for the first time, by the Tesla Corporation to an outsider.

kitcar··on Sorry to burst your bubble
On a related topic, can anyone point me to articles / research related to how bubbles continue to inflate during recessionary periods? From my uninformed/simplistic viewpoint it seems like the two are opposing concepts (i.e. popped bubbles lead to recession), other then the fact that governments use low interest rates to try and dig themselves out of recessions, and cheap money tend to fuel bubbles. The reason for my interest is this seems to be what is happening in Canada right now ( see http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canadian-house-prices-35-ove... + http://www.leaderpost.com/business/Johnstone+Canada+recessio... )
kitcar··on Match Group Buys PlentyOfFish for $575M
Online dating is a mature industry with lots of M&A and therefore historical multiples -
kitcar··on Douglas Coupland: Moody
I think more-so what past decades may find unusual is that a Canadian, born in Germany, is an artist in residence position in France, at an American institution.
kitcar··on Without LinkedIn account I won't get a job in US?
Depends on where you want to work / what you want to do - If you are a software engineer, a strong Github/Stackoverflow presence which demonstrates your technical competency (and that you can draw attention to early in a cover letter) would likely help you stand out more than a standard linkedin profile IMHO.
kitcar··on Canadian Early-Stage Fund with Investment Decisions in 48hrs
Just a guess here (I'm not affiliated in any way) but the "Ontario Centers of Excellence" is listed on their partners page - the OCE is a gov't funded body which provides ~$55K of matching funds in the form of grants to early stage companies (i.e. you raise $55K from accredited investors, they provide the other $55K as a grant) - that could be why their max commitment is $110,000.
kitcar··on Kijiji, a Flop in the U.S., Rules Online Classifieds in Canada
Mostly conversations with Kijiji Canada employees between 2008-2010. I vaguely remember them mentioning the recruitment of a "super affiliate" from Montreal to manage their PPC program as being a key event in their success in Canada.
kitcar··on Kijiji, a Flop in the U.S., Rules Online Classifieds in Canada
I believe the main reason for Kijijis success in Canada is in its early years Kijiji canada ran massive PPC arbitrage campaigns - buying clicks for pennies from Google and reselling to unsophisticated Canadian media buyers for a significant markup. This enabled Kijiji Canada to continually invest massively into audience acquisition in Canada for many years, and as marketplace value is driven by scale, enabled them to build up the leadership position they have today.
kitcar··on Inventing Favicon.ico
Although I can't stop the requests from being sent, a standard line I add into all my nginx confs to at least minimize my logfiles:

location = /favicon.ico { access_log off; log_not_found off; }

kitcar··on I'll buy you a coffee to talk about fintech
Not in fintech, but: http://www.meetup.com/SF-Fintech/
kitcar··on [dead]
This could just be a scammy link building technique - release fake news relevant to the SEO industry in order to get links from high authority SEO sites, in order to increase rankings of your SEO consulting firm. The proximity to April 1st doesn't help...
kitcar··on German court issues nationwide ban on Uber driving services
in Canada, UberX is 100% non-licensed taxis (i.e. just normal people with their personally owned cars picking up passengers using Uber)
kitcar··on Magic
You're basically describing ODesk, Elance, Mechanical Turk, etc... Not saying this execution will/won't work, but there are lots of firms that seemed to have make it work to solve a similar / the same problem set.
kitcar··on Inside a Chinese Bitcoin Mine That's Grossing $1.5M a Month
One comment which I haven't seen come up much is bitcoin mining doesn't actually have to be "profitable" to be useful. For example, if you live in a country that has restrictions to prevent capital flight (i.e. extra taxes on money transfers to foreign accounts, etc...), ignoring the potential criminality implications, mining bitcoins at a "forex loss" and transferring those bitcoins may still be a better net financial option than just transferring the money in whatever your native currency is.

I believe China used to have some pretty significant restrictions to prevent capital flight - I wonder if that has something to do with this mining operation.

kitcar··on Microsoft has been making quality assurance mistakes lately
As an aside but related - I bought a Surface Pro 3 and was shocked to discover major issues with its WiFi when you have Hyper-V enabled. Basically WiFi "breaks" whenever you wake the device, and can only be re-enabled through a reboot. (http://winsupersite.com/surface/will-microsoft-ever-fix-surf...)
kitcar··on Lost Franklin expedition ship found in the Arctic
He is a huge history buff - Stephen Harper actually wrote a book about history relevant to Canada, while acting as Prime Minister! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Great_Game - It got pretty bad reviews though)
kitcar··on Vice Raises $500M in Its Quest for 'Total Media Domination'
Usually CPMs advertised in media kits are cut by ~50% by the time an actual insertion order is placed -
kitcar··on Home Depot Investigates a Possible Data Breach
One interesting thing I've noticed as a home depot customer is they don't require you to have a receipt for returns, as they can access all previous transactions based on your credit card number (... and therefore presumably have a centralized database which maintains a record of any credit card used at a home depot, hopefully in some hashed/encrypted format)
kitcar··on Uber to ignore German ban despite being ruled 'illegal'
Except our commutes to work / meeting would be 5x as long due to unpredictable travel patterns, causing us to achieve significantly less in any given 24 hour period.

(I remember my first trip to India (Mumbai) being 3 hours late to a meeting because I didn't account for the delays an basically unregulated road transport system can cause...)

kitcar··on Zenamins (YC S14) Mails You Personalized Vitamins
Yes, there have been problems with vitamin manufacturers making aggressive claims regarding the power of vitamins (see http://www.salon.com/2013/06/25/are_vitamins_a_billion_dolla... )
kitcar··on Can I work at Facebook with a family?
Depends on the specific role, salary, and the lifestyle you choose to live, but Facebook has thousands of employees, many of which have families larger than yours and are still doing fine -

kitcar··on An open competition to build a smaller power inverter, with a $1M prize
Quebec has unusual laws with regards to contests (Quebec's legal system is unique in many ways from the rest of Canada's due to its French past)

http://business.financialpost.com/2011/09/08/why-many-contes...

"the province’s Lotteries Act ... require you to post security for contests open to Quebec residents where you do not have a place of business in Quebec, the value of any single prize exceeds $5,000 or the total prize value exceeds $20,000."

kitcar··on Hospitals Are Mining Patients' Credit Card Data to Predict Who Will Get Sick
There are a number of receipt scanning services which can provide what you're looking for (they are mostly B2B, but do what you basically suggest) https://www.shoeboxed.com/ http://www.neat.com/ etc...
kitcar··on Diet Soda Beats Water for Weight Loss, Industry-Funded Study Finds
Would be interesting to read the original paper, but it does makes some logical sense that consuming laxatives would result in some water loss, and therefore weight loss. (Some artificial sweeteners are laxatives). Unfortunately it would not be the kind of weight loss most people are looking to achieve.
