kitcar··on Venezuelan Opposition Leaders Detained at Gunpoint in Raids
What if the government shuts down internet access ? Then how do you buy bitcoins? Or sell the ones you have for a local currency?

I don't see how Bitcoin is a great solution here when it depends on utilities managed by the government for its liquidity...

kitcar··on Minimum Wage and Job Loss: One Alarming Seattle Study Is Not the Last Word
You may be assuming incorrectly that there is work that needs to be done - if there is no one who wants to pay to use the building, there is no reason to fix it (i.e. just because an asset exists doesn't mean there is demand for it)
kitcar··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
Interesting that they have been able to raise prices over time - a fixed number of cheap seats available at any moment means the more users on the email list, the less likely an individual user will be able to extract value from the list - hence list growth actually reduces the value it delivers.

I guess fear of missing out is a strong sales tool!

kitcar··on Tales of SugarCRM Security Horrors
Based on OroCRM's comparison chart their community edition is effectively a non-feature complete version of their commercial product, i.e. same scenario that happened to Sugar?

kitcar··on Tales of SugarCRM Security Horrors
FWIW SuiteCRM has the exact same "remove XSS" button in the admin panel that Sugar has - doesn't exactly scream "we're confident in our security"
kitcar··on Tales of SugarCRM Security Horrors
How timely; I recently evaluated sugarcrm/suitecrm but similar to author was dismayed by their code quality.

Does anyone have any recommendations of other open source CRMs?

kitcar··on Instacart Closes Latest Funding Round at $3.4B Valuation
>The delivery service is actually a loss leader for instacart's underlying business, which is influencing purchase decisions through their app and getting paid for it

If that were true, wouldn't a heck of an easier approach have been to setup an "ad network for retail delivery apps"? I think you might be underestimating both the difficulty of the logistics side of their business, and therefore its value as well. I've never really looked into Instacart (Not available here), but I imagine a more likely Instacart investment thesis is "if local businesses were given the option to not have to manage their delivery fleet, with minimal impact on other parts of their business, would they switch? + How much can we reduce the cost of local delivery due to scale/volume, and therefore is a monopoly position in local delivery achievable?

kitcar··on Vancouver Tax on Empty Homes to Target Near-Zero Rental Supply
There has actually been a massive amount of high rise development - its just questionable if the "type" of high rise inventory coming online is inline with the type of places people want to love. The bigger issue is a non significant number of people are buying the new construction inventory as well as pre-existing inventory and not moving in / not renting them out...

kitcar··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2016)
Unyte Health Inc Industry: Gaming, Health & Wellness Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Onsite or Remote in special cases)

We are a "meditation technology" company. We were one of the first companies to produce Biofeedback hardware and software for consumers (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_Wild_Divine ). We're currently revamping both our hardware and software library, and are looking to bring on an experienced Unity 3D Developer to lead software efforts. Both contract or full-time are options. Remote is a possibility if you are a resident of Ontario.

Experience optimizing Unity 3D games to run well across mobile platforms is a must - as we're a small team, "jack of all trades" (optimizing 3D models and other art assets, etc...) is great. Finally, if you're interested in Virtual Reality development we've got some interesting stuff in the pipeline there as well.

We've got a really cool office space walking distance from the U of T campus and both subway lines (Spadina + Bloor). Full kitchen, freshly ground coffee, flexible work hours, etc...

Contact: careers at unyte.com or reach out to me directly via my HN profile - What to send with your application: 1-2 paragraphs about any relevant experience, links to project samples (i.e. public repos, open source projects you've contributed to or stack overflow profile), and also what attracts you to the role.

kitcar··on Why California is so expensive: It’s not just the weather, it’s the regulation
What you read likely has to do with multi-individual/family focused dwellings. Toronto is currently overbuilt for single bed rooms, but under-built for units suitable for families.

Anyways, as far as what to do - Patience. Most people in Toronto who have good/great credit have mortgages w/~2.4% interest rate and 5 or less year term. What that means is that a ~1% increase in rates would increase their annual interest expense by ~50%. Considering that the average house price is $1MM in the GTA, let's say the average downpayment is 20% (it's actually lower from what I've read...), and you're looking at a situation where if rates go up just 1%, the average new home owner is going to need to come up with an additional $8K / year after tax, so ~$11-16K before tax, in order to not default on their mortgage. With wages being as stagnant as they are in Canada, and the average Canadian being more in debt than they have ever been in the history of the country(1), you can imagine that there will at least be a couple of people who will no longer be able to afford the houses they are in and need to sell it off.

kitcar··on Canada’s $6.9B Wildfire Is the Size of Delaware and Still Out of Control
1) Extremely low interest rates combined with government backed mortgages (CMHC) means lots of people now have mortgages they will be unable to carry if interests rates rise by 1% (as that would be a 50% increase in their interest payments...) 2) Foreign investment (Vancouver+Toronto).

kitcar··on Oculus Rift Review: VR’s Rising Star Isn’t Ready for the Mainstream
Correct, the interface between the phone and the headset is the charge port, but there is an additional port on the Gear VR itself to allow for charging while being used.

The original Gear VR ("Innovator edition") could not be charged while used though if I remember correctly.

kitcar··on Facebook has given some developers access to an unannounced Chat SDK
If your goal is to have ecstatically happy customers, you may want to begin thinking about your customer service channels as wherever your customers want to talk to you, versus where you want to talk to them.

I know its a lot of work / not possible for all businesses / makes running the business more difficult, but hopefully minimizing unhappy customers should result in sales growth which offsets the investment in customer service.
