kisstheblade··on Two men are trying to become the first person to cross Antarctica alone
If you have to tell other people about your trips then it is (also) for vanity. Nobody does these extreme trips and doesn't tell about them to anybody.
kisstheblade··on Student-Loan Debt Is Crushing Millennials
The figure 8% of GDP sounded mind boggling. But apparently it's true.

Quoth the wiki: "Approximately 43 million have student loans, with an average balance of $30,000. In 2017, average student loan debt reached $39, 400, an increase of 6% compared to 2016. Americans owe more than $1.48 trillion (44 million borrowers) which is roughly $620 billion more than the overall credit card debt in the country."

Just to compare to a communist I mean socialist country (Finland in this example), where we had an article about the massive increase in student loans (doubled in the last 10 years).

400 000 people with loans totalling 3 billion (about 7600eur per person). To scale that with the population of the US so about 60x we get the number 180 billion vs. 1480 billion.

Man you have it tough there :) Good thing that you all will be multi billionaires (or so everyone apparently thinks when voting) so no need for tax reform or any other kind of communist/socialist crap :)

kisstheblade··on How to Handle Monetary Values in JavaScript
I usually use cents as the stored amount, so no decimals. Is there something obviously wrong with this approach?

Ie. if the price is 150.95 I store 15095 in the db and do the calculations with cents, and then divide by 100 when presenting the values.

I have never come across fractional cents, maybe that is an issue in some scenarios (would be interested to know what those are... Even tax percentage calculations are rounded to the cent)

kisstheblade··on Is Saudi money becoming radioactive?
Well, money talks, and weak people like money. The saudis are scum, I would never have anything to do with them. I mean the just now apparently "let" women drive! Are you kidding me, they still think of women as property and as lesser beings than dogs. Or try being gay over there.
kisstheblade··on Why Is Behavioral Economics So Popular?
Oh my, how can anybody think that they are in any way affiliated!? /s That's just a cop out. Both are equally dubious, sugarcoated garbage.
kisstheblade··on Ask HN: What do you hate most about HN?
Comments beginning with "This".

The comments when all comments seem to be concentrated in a couple of threads rehashing the same issues.

All stories concerning the housing problem in SF. Nobody cares, move on, it's just a city. Yes I know there must be a disproportional amount of SF residents in this forum, but nobody still cares about your housing problems :)

kisstheblade··on Ask HN: What can be done to prevent a climate catastrophe?
The green parties around the world are to blame for this. The only worthwhile actions to combat this are

1) Using nuclear power (on a massive scale preferrably) 2) Stopping globalisation (because transport is such a large contributor to CO2 emissions.). Local manufacturing would be much better for the environment (reduced transportation needs and also the western countries factories are much more sustainable than in third world countries and china)

Also reducing immigration helps, people in Africa use much less resources than the same people eg. transported to the cold north.

kisstheblade··on US Congress passes bill to help advanced nuclear power
To all the "where does the spent fuel go" (dump it in the ocean) and "too expensive" (regulatory problem). These things are not a problem. Only the irrational fear of "nucular" is the problem.

Educate yourself http://www.phyast.pitt.edu/~blc/book/

"For nuclear waste, a simple, quick, and easy disposal method would be to convert the waste into a glass — a technology that is well in hand — and simply drop it into the ocean at random locations.5 No one can claim that we don't know how to do that! With this disposal, the waste produced by one power plant in one year would eventually cause an average total of 0.6 fatalities, spread out over many millions of years, by contaminating seafood. Incidentally, this disposal technique would do no harm to ocean ecology. In fact, if all the world's electricity were produced by nuclear power and all the waste generated for the next hundred years were dumped in the ocean, the radiation dose to sea animals would never be increased by as much as 1% above its present level from natural radioactivity."

kisstheblade··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
Haha, where I live we have no natural light even outside half of the year (near the arctic circle). And we are most productive during the dark season because there isn't anything else to do, or any distractions nagging on your mind (like going to the beach etc) :)
kisstheblade··on Mercedes Readies First Tesla Rival in $12B Attack
No, it's over 300km (source: have actually drived that much on a charge). It's an excellent car, can't imagine what a tesla has to offer over it (I don't care about 0-100km/h speed, ie. the zoe is quite fast enough, and the Zoe's range is suitable for my uses). I guess the build quality is also better with the Zoe, and it doesn't have a ridiculous giant touch screen in the center console.
kisstheblade··on Amazon hits $1T market cap
Could someone explain the math here. So amazon is worth almost 500 times their income!? That doesn't make any sense even if they are growing like crazy and investing their profits or something.
kisstheblade··on USA Temperature: can I sucker you?
How would you chart your body temperature? Starting with 0 kelvin? Then you could conclude that all is well because you can't spot a 2 degree increase, right?
kisstheblade··on The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race (1987)
Yes, nice example, let's all just eat mongo-nuts (which btw I have never seen lying on the ground where I live...)

"One Bushman, when asked why he hadn't emulated neighboring tribes by adopting agriculture, replied, Why should we, when there are so many mongongo nuts in the world?"

Places where there is easy access to food have never evolved any technological progress and the societies are still messed up, because they never had to understand co-operation and just have tribalism of some sort. Just compare africa (probably the richest country in resources) with eg. europe.

What a stupid article.

kisstheblade··on Ask HN: What are the best Sci-Fi books you've ever read?
Excession by Iain M Banks. The other culture novels are also good but not as fun as Excession.
kisstheblade··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
And then HBO makes a show like Westworld, i.e. low quality of shows and low amount, what a winning strategy :)
kisstheblade··on In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
You can't compare to USA migration (esp. what happened in the past). Because there was no social security for the immigrants. So you were quite free to enter the country and work, but you had to take care of yourself.

Contrast to eg. Denmark where immigrants can enter the country and do absolutely nothing, and get a full upkeep with free housing, schools and health care.

And here the problem is that some of these people like it that way and don't even try to get a work and teach their children how to get work (eg. by learning the local language and other social norms, like that women are considered equal).

kisstheblade··on ‘Everyone is breaking the law right now’: GDPR compliance is falling short
Isn't the intent of the law quite easy to understand?

Do not track/store anything by default. And your site works perfectly and without questions.

If you then have a legitimate need for some data, without which your site doesnät work (eg. gps location data for a map), then you ask for it.

And if you need to use ads, then have some opt in button somewhere deep in the settings where the user can go and click "please track me aggressively" if he so chooses.

kisstheblade··on Panama Papers: Mossack Fonseca was unable to identify company owners
How does the "beneficial owner" benefit from the ownership if he can't prove he's the owner? How do they get their money out? And can't we tax them at this point? Yes I understand these are difficult schemes but can't you just freeze accounts you don't know who the owner is and see who comes out of the woodwork. Just freeze all accounts until paperwork X is signed, problem solved?
kisstheblade··on Taxation of Carried Interest
By all means he deserves more money, no problem. But why with a lower tax rate?
kisstheblade··on The Insanity of Driving
I think that for these big corporations the value of individual "knowledge workers" isn't that great, so they can afford to keep them in rush hour traffic and not have them operating at their peak (see also open office plans). I mean they don't need so many highly skilled and innovative individuals. That's why I don't get the relatively high salaries at eg. facebook. They need maybe a handfull (10-100) of extraordinary people, the rest can be mediocre at best and get the job done. I mean it's a website and selling ads for christs sake :)
kisstheblade··on GDPR Version of USA Today Is 500KB Instead of 5.2MB
Tried to open the twitter link. Asked me to agree to their terms to continue to use th service. Answered no. No the link just says "Oops, something went wrong. Please try again later." (the link is https://twitter.com/i/flow/consent_violation_flow)

Gotta love the GDPR, a nice way to get rid of all the "social media" crap and hundreds of ad trackers that has infested every corner of the internet.

kisstheblade··on Google and Facebook accused of breaking GDPR laws
Absoultely every site that has had a new GDPR warning is just the same as the old cookie banner. "By using the site you agree..." Some have updated privacy pages which describes how you can delete or deny cookies... An absolute joke, nobody is following the law.

It should be simple. A new banner that asks "allow tracking", yes, no. Either option allows you to use the site freely.

kisstheblade··on Facebook Locking Out GDPR Users Until They Consent
Saw this yesterday. Deleted my account. Problem solved. Recommended.
kisstheblade··on Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015)
"You hold a 5 percent fixed-rate 30-year mortgage"

Yeah, no. I know that many people may have loans of this size and I never understood it. And it is of course a reason for high prices.

When my parent's bought a house a typical mortgage was paid off in maybe 10 years. I myself took a loan of 12 years. And not at 5% percent! The real rate is about 0.2% at the moment (and has been 1-2% during the ten years I've been paying). After paying this reasonably sized loan I can buy another house with a similar loan.

I have also heard of 60 year loans! (eg. sweden). Now that is indeed stupid and throwing money away.

kisstheblade··on A.I. Researchers Are Making More Than $1M, Even at a Nonprofit
And I have yet to see any "AI" worth anything. Some image recognition and rudimentary translation engines maybe, but "AI", way overhyped.
kisstheblade··on Why SQLite Does Not Use Git
Probably not new users, or they shouldn't as the creator of BitKeeper says the project is dead and he is retired.
kisstheblade··on Tesla Looked Like the Future, Now Some Ask If It Has One
What are you talking about. I'm driving a Zoe as we speak. Super competive relative to a car I can't buy.
kisstheblade··on Tesla Looked Like the Future, Now Some Ask If It Has One
Renault already has a compelling electric car. A happy owner of a Zoe. Absolutely no regrets with this car. Which I can have today.
kisstheblade··on Tesla Looked Like the Future, Now Some Ask If It Has One
Seriously. I bought a Renault Zoe (in europe). What the F has Tesla to offer to maintain that kind of valuation? I can find zero compelling reasons to by a Tesla compared to the Renault. Oh and also, I can't buy a Tesla at this date at that price.
kisstheblade··on Ask HN: What do Facebook employees think about their company?
I think the more salient question is "why do people post everything on facebook (and other services)". No sane person can be surprised that this is what happens with your data that you freely give away. And what I have been hearing nobody actually is surprised. Nor do they care in the end. Selling adverts is just an extremely lucrative business, get over it. It is what pays for your entertainment (sports etc), information (magazines, internet sites etc) and just about everything.
