kirubakaran··on Show HN: I made a Note-Taking app for people who keep texting themselves
It looks great! I'm building https://histre.com/ and I find that some people do prefer to use a chat app they're already using. I built a Telegram bot so that they can keep taking notes on Telegram and not have to switch, but still get all the benefits of a real knowledge tool: https://histre.com/features/take-notes-with-telegram/ Perhaps you could build something like that to ease the transition?

I meant Senior Management. "Product Manager" manages the product, not people.

Sounds like a management issue, not a PM/Engg issue

kirubakaran··on Why AI Infrastructure Startups Are Insanely Hard to Build
Yes, Brannan cornered the market before he sold the shovels. Selling shovels is not that profitable if you skip that "Step 1".

> he owned the only store between San Francisco and the gold fields — a fact he capitalized on by buying up all the picks, shovels and pans he could find, and then running up and down the streets of San Francisco, shouting 'Gold! Gold on the American River!' He paid 20 cents each for the pans, then sold them for $15 a piece. In nine weeks, he made $36,000."

kirubakaran··on Anybody have problems with bookmark organization like me?
You could try https://histre.com/ (disclaimer: mine)

You don't even have to manually bookmark, in fact. It automatically learns what is important to you and surfaces the correct link on search. It has a ton of other knowledge management features too.

I used to pay a lot of attention to the comments of certain HN users who made well reasoned but (with the clarity of hindsight) mostly doomer predictions about various topics. I wish I hadn't listened to them.

kirubakaran··on Ask HN: At what age did you become interested in coding?
9. Parents got me an Apple //c for practicing chess (Sargon III), as my coach quit. The guy who sold the computer liked the questions I was asking him and threw in some programming books and magazines for free. I enjoyed programming a lot more than playing chess competitively, and I've been programming ever since.

kirubakaran··on Ask HN: How did you do your 2023 tax returns?
If you're in the expensive part of California like me (SF), you could try to find an accountant in the cheaper parts of California (Central Valley for example).
kirubakaran··on Emacs 2011-2023
The surprising part for me wasn't that he was installing packages. It was that he just did a super fast search-click-install loop, where many of them had handful of ratings max, some even 3 stars or less. I'm used to checking out the Github repo of the package first, considering how many stars it has, how many releases there have been, etc before adding it to Emacs.

But you bring up a good point. Perhaps installing packages willy nilly is orthogonal to the editor choice.

kirubakaran··on No Experience Necessary (2003)
I have the same optimistic belief as you, but I wonder if the world really works like that. Meta employees (who are by definition smart enough to get the job) haven't all quit after reading the studies that show that Instagram usage results in teen depression and suicides.

Or perhaps that supports your point. The smart people with fluid morality are vacuumed up by the Metas of the world, leaving none that would build a nuke for a third world dictator.

Despite what he thinks, I'm glad you did what you did. Thanks!

It reminded me of the movie Due Date:

Peter Highman: How have you made it this far? How have you not run yourself over in a car?
    Ethan Tremblay: I've done that.
Peter Highman: How have you survived? That's my question.
    Ethan Tremblay: Mostly luck.

Considering the chart starts in 2014, I can understand the parent commenter having difficulty taking your Covid-19 argument in good faith.

What data would you need to see to change your mind?

PS: I went looking for data, and the number of traffic fatalities per year haven't gone up significantly since 2014. So I stand corrected. It's a big relief, as an SF resident; parent commenter's chart was really worrying. Phew
