You have to adjust your priors at some point though, right?

kirubakaran··on First methane-powered sea spiders found crawling on the ocean floor
Lots of fears are visceral, but even if we were to allow only verbalizable fears, one could imagine the arachnophobes thinking "what if this tiny spider burrows through my eyes or ears and lays eggs inside my brain, and then all the baby spiders stream out of my mouth and nostrils"

People who are not terrified of spiders, of course.

Arachnophobia (even the mild variety) is not universal. I know some people who think spiders are cute. It takes all kinds, I guess.

kirubakaran··on Tell HN: Beware confidentiality agreements that act as lifetime non competes
Shockley -> Fairchild -> Intel, AMD couldn't have happened with non-compete. So Silicon Valley couldn't have happened in Washington.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traitorous_eight

Per capita isn't a good measure here, as Washington's weather helps lower the denominator (I say this as a former Seattle resident)

kirubakaran··on Tell HN: Beware confidentiality agreements that act as lifetime non competes
It's funny how states like Washington are notorious for enforceable non-competes, to be "business friendly".

Meanwhile California bans non-competes, and its GDP is 4th largest in the world if it were a country!

"incumbent friendly" vs "startup friendly"

Thanks, I'll create an HN theme for that page. BTW here's more discussion about this, back when I did a "Show HN" : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35904988

Thanks, will do. Please see my cousin comment for a potential workaround.

Thanks. I'll create a HN-like theme.

In the meantime, if you install the browser extension, you can get the tags directly in HN itself. Would that address the ui issue?

Different strokes indeed
kirubakaran··on Why I stopped angel investing after 15 years, and what I'm doing instead
While that can always be arranged if all the parties agree, it would be a bad idea for the founders to give the angels the option to cash out like that, as the fact that they're choosing to cash out will tank all further investments. VCs will wonder "What do they know that I don't?"

Always consider signaling risk.

This can be avoided by always cashing out, I guess. But it's bad for angels to always cash out, as letting it ride on the unicorns is the only way to make meaningful returns, if any.

Always consider power law.

It makes sense to walk away even in the game theoretic sense. Many people think in terms of prisoner's dilemma, when it is actually iterated prisoner's dilemma.
kirubakaran··on The hidden cost of AI coding
This morning I made this while sipping coffee, and it solves a real problem for my gf: https://github.com/kirubakaran/xmldiffer Sure it's not enormous, and it was built from scratch, but imho it's not a trivial thing either. It would've taken me at least a day or two of full time work, and I certainly don't have a couple of days to spare on a task like this. Instead, pair programming with AI made it into a fun relaxing activity.
