kirang1989··on Awk by Example
If anyone's interested, I created a repo that contains some common one-liners that I've used https://github.com/kirang89/awk-cookbook. There's a PDF version as well :)
kirang1989··on My Most Important Project Was a Bytecode Interpreter
This is an awesome list. Thanks!
kirang1989··on Ask HN: How do you get notified about newest research papers in your field?
You might want to check out the Papers We Love repo at https://github.com/papers-we-love/papers-we-love. That's my goto resource.
kirang1989··on PG Casts – Postgres Screencasts
+1 for JsonB.
kirang1989··on Ask HN: How do you handle large Python projects?
You should try elpy-mode or anaconda-mode. You get better completion, integration with eldoc for documentation, go-to definition and much more.
kirang1989··on Ask HN: What's the process of writing a new programming language?
Highly Recommended. It really helped me simplify the process of writing a compiler.
kirang1989··on State of Clojure 2015: Survey Results
Second this. Definitely a good beginner's book.
kirang1989··on Show HN: 3D shooter in your terminal using raycasting in Awk
I was inspired to check out AWK after reading this sentence from the book Masterminds of Programming:

"If I had to choose a word to describe our centering forces in language design, I’d say Kernighan emphasized ease of learning; Weiberger, soundness of implementation; and I, utility. I think AWK has all three of these properties."

kirang1989··on The Desk of Haruki Murakami
Love that Ergo 4000!
kirang1989··on Ask HN: I am busy with too many things at once
> Finally, someone linked this on a vaguely similar thread recently: https://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~kilcup/262/feynman.html - I thought it was great.

Feynman is a lovely example to follow for anyone wanting to become an engineer. The book is one of my all-time favorites.

kirang1989··on Ask HN: I feel like I'm in a filter bubble. How can I “expand my horizons”?
> Stop reddit usage (reddit is a watering hole for morons).

Disagree. Reddit is a treasure trove if you're subscribed to the right topics.

kirang1989··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
The short history of nearly everything - Bill Bryson

This book rekindled my interest and love for science.

kirang1989··on Ask HN: What's the best technical eBook you have read?
A brilliant book indeed!
kirang1989··on Poll: For your startup, do you use Django, Rails, PHP or Other?
Python/Flask
kirang1989··on Ask HN: What's the best programming book you've read recently?
Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective and NAND2Tetris: Elements of Computing Systems are the best books to learn the internals of computer hardware and solidify your understanding of how a computer works.

The Pragmatic Programmer - My all time favorite. Awesome book to learn best practices of various aspects in programming.

The Code Book: The Evolution Of Secrecy From Mary, Queen Of Scots To Quantum Cryptography, if you have a thing for cryptography.

kirang1989··on Looking to contribute to open source as a python beginner
For starters, if you aren't quite used to the the workflow of contributing to an open source project, you could start helping out by submitting some good reads to pycrumbs (https://github.com/kirang89/pycrumbs).
kirang1989··on Show HN: CodePair - etherpad + codechecker + analytics for interviews
This is pretty cool for phone interviews, but I certainly do hope that people refrain from using this as their only method of interviewing candidates.
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
I see. Thank you for the resources :)
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
Any good resources to read more about "discoverability" that you'd recommend ?
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
Precisely the reason why I enojoy integrating Stripe or Twilio. They've abstracted a complex service with a beautiful API and awesome documentation.
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
Yes, those points are general traits of all great software. But there are still API's out there that fail to conform to those basic principles and that's why I wanted to write the post as a checklist to self, to remind as to what makes an API great.
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
Consistency indeed ! Thanks :)
kirang1989··on What makes a great API ?
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions ! :)

The "valuable service point" struck me now. I'll refactor that section on the blog soon.

kirang1989··on Building a Web App From the Ground Up
Language - Python

Framework - Flask

Database - MySQL (since I've learnt about it from my university)

Hosting - AWS or Webfaction

No particular choice of infrastructure. Since I'm learning to build a web app from scratch, I'll tend to focus more on getting various pieces together.

kirang1989··on Ask HN: To everybody who uses MapReduce: what problems do you solve?
Just FYI: Even small problems can be solved using the concept of MapReduce. It is a concept and not an implementation that is tied to BigData and NoSQL. A simple example would be MergeSort. It uses the concept of MR to sort data.
kirang1989··on Clinkle
They've already launched in a few colleges, but won't be available to the public, until about a year from now I guess. And for the amount of funding they've taken, they should be making products :D
kirang1989··on Poll: What is your favorite programming font?
Ubuntu Mono, Consolas and Inconsolata are some of my favourites for Python Programming

Droid Sans Mono, Consolas for Java programming.

kirang1989··on Ask HN: Suggest me a Linux (Ubuntu) Desktop Computer for coding
Incase you're interested, I merged up a couple of scripts into a project, that helps me to automatically setup my development environment in Ubuntu.

kirang1989··on Registrations Open for Pycon India 2013
Whoa, noticing this only now !
kirang1989··on Ask HN: Modern stacks and frameworks for fast web app development?
Play 1.x with Java works well for medium to large size applications. It's stateless architecture gives you the performance you need. For small projects, I like to use Flask.
