kingo55··on Muse Glimmer: 30B-parameter model optimized for always-on local agent workflows
I'm running it in router mode, but people on Reddit were recommending people use llama-swap instead. Am I missing something by using router mode?

Poolside Laguna was quite good too (if you look beyond some of the teething issues).

Had Deepseek V4 Flash 0731 not launched, their latest Laguna release was really intelligent at non-coding tasks and it would have been my go-to model for my local workloads.

kingo55··on Qwen 3.8
At 1.5 bits per weight it'll still be over 500gb - that's still not running on consumer hardware.

Best case they release smaller models. 120b class of qwen 3.8 would be incredible - it fits on device for those serious about AI, but without millions of dollars in hardware for terabytes of VRAM

kingo55··on Qwen 3.8
If he bans them, they'll just show up as torrents. Or we'll download them from Chinese hugging face.

Over Dario's dead body.

At least Sam have us a nice model last year with the gpt-oss family.

kingo55··on Show HN: A zoomable timeline of 4M Wikipedia events
Events in the future are labelled in past tense. Rather than "happened in 4.5B" you could write "forecast in 4.5B"
kingo55··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Why risk it either way if they provide weights for others to run this?

Am I being overly cautious not wanting to send my data to Chinese companies?

kingo55··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Thankyou. Sorry to hear it locked up your browser. That definitely sounds like a bug - I've got GPT 5.6 Sol on the case...
kingo55··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Thanks - I'm saving the biggest and oldest producers like Spain and Italy till last so I can do them justice.
kingo55··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
I hope you're joking.

Continuing to build my olive oil tracking site (https://www.extravirginvault.com/) and pipeline. Freshness is king in the world of olive oil, and I hope to highlight to people they can find high quality, fresh olive oil produced near them.

It's been received well from producers and olive oil enthusiasts (e.g. looking for specific chemistry, cultivars and similar oils) but I feel like I've been shadow banned from Google - I seem to get more traffic from DuckDuckGo and Bing.

kingo55··on Choosing a Public DNS Resolver
> I pre-cache all the domains I use hourly via cron.

How does this look? Shell script querying a list of hostnames? What qualifies as a domain you use?

kingo55··on Choosing a Public DNS Resolver
It would be nice if a site like this could offer a basic speed comparison test to your local network.

Imagine seeing response times at P90 for a series of random lookups and comparing the median response times.

kingo55··on The End of Eleventy
Thanks! Just fixed it - that did the trick...
kingo55··on The End of Eleventy
Well spotted! I'm leaving the OG's like Greece, Spain and Italy till last so I can do them justice.
kingo55··on The End of Eleventy
It's sad to see 11ty co-opted like this especially after building a complex project on it with several thousand pages (https://www.extravirginvault.com/). Despite the complexity, I feel like it's only a couple of days work to replatform my site to a more modern SSG like Astro.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone feels strongly enough about 11ty to fight for it when the next SSG is a few Claude Code prompts away.

kingo55··on Show HN: Context Gateway – Compress agent context before it hits the LLM
Presumably in much the same way it knows it needs to use to calls for reaching its objective.
kingo55··on Can I run AI locally?
How's it compare in quality with larger models in the same series? E.g 122b?
kingo55··on Plasma Bigscreen – 10-foot interface for KDE plasma
Are there existing alternatives to this? I use KDE, but I have also heard Steam OS has something similar.

kingo55··on Teaching my neighbor to keep the volume down
Funnily enough about 10 years ago, I had noisy neighbours playing music late at night and after some fruitless attempts at politely asking them to turn the sound down, I found their wifi and ran a 'deauth attack'. Effectively flooding their wifi with packets disconnecting devices. Followed by a, "fuck!"

Safe to say we got peaceful nights sleep.

kingo55··on Spending on AI Is at Epic Levels. Will It Ever Pay Off?
I look forward to the cheap compute flooding the market when the music stops.
kingo55··on Improved Gemini 2.5 Flash and Flash-Lite
It had a date, but I also agree this is extremely confusing. Even semver 2.5.1 would be clearer IMO.
kingo55··on x402 — An open protocol for internet-native payments
As opposed to blockchain where reversal depends on the grace of the merchant.

I've often wondered whether payments providers entering the blockchain space (like Visa/Mastercard) would act as trusted intermediaries for dispute resolution. Kind of a 2-of-3 multisig to disperse the funds in escrow.

kingo55··on x402 — An open protocol for internet-native payments
That would be nice... Good luck to you if you can use it.

I would consider myself tech savvy but I struggled immensely to run lightning without custodial risk back.

kingo55··on I want everything local – Building my offline AI workspace
If you've tried gpt-oss:120b and Moonshot AIs Kimi Dev, it feels like this is getting closer to reality. Mac Studios, while expensive are now offering 512gb of usable RAM as well. The tooling available to running local models is also becoming more accessible than even just a year ago.
kingo55··on Do not download the app, use the website
Given how much it seems Apple detests PWAs, I don't ever see this happening. One can dream.
kingo55··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
There's now Ethereum, Base and Solana featuring US dollar stablecoins and significantly cheaper fees. If you want to go a step further and eliminate the stablecoin issuer's counterparty risk you could even pay in the base asset of ETH. Shopify allows payments from crypto now, so Steam should try it again.

Good luck censoring purchases on ETH.

kingo55··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
Changing your hosts file helps but it would only block hostnames primarily used for ads and trackers - it wouldn't address those trackers and ads loaded from hostnames shared with actual content. The more sophisticated sites will proxy their tracking and ads through their main app:

E.g. www.cnn.com/ads.js

I prefer having multiple layers just in case anything drops off:

1. VPN DNS / AdGuard local cached DNS 2. uBlock Origin

It's like wearing two condoms (but it feels better than natural).
