Nice,
kingkool68··on From "Hack" to "Popular Project"
This is the same process that happened to me when I created http://dummyimage.com (Complete history of the project: http://www.russellheimlich.com/blog/the-history-of-dummyimag...)

The funny thing is my project laid dormant for years until a friend of mine shared it here on HackerNews.

Thanks I'm glad you like the ad sizes. My goal was to make it pretty hard to get a 404 while sticking to a format that's natural and easy to use. Originally dummyimage.com only had size parameters then peopel clamored for color and custom text thanks to another Hacker News post.

I've jotted down the brief history of how dummyimage.com got started for anyone interested as well http://www.russellheimlich.com/blog/the-history-of-dummyimag...

Hmmm it's a thought.

Don't worry you didn't break anything. Firefox will show scrollbars if you click on the image which will show it at actual size.

Oh yea I'm working on an option to change the background color. I was hoping to use an elegant syntax like http://dummyimage.com/300x250#ccc for a gray background. Too bad you can't capture anything after the hash tag on the server side. Any feedback on a better syntax?
kingkool68··on A 'lorem ipsum' for images.
Try doing that with a print designer over your shoulder debating on two image sizes.

Good idea! I'm working on making an option to change the background color. Ideal syntax would be http://dummyimage.com/300x200#ccc for a gray background. Too bad the server is never sent anchor information so I've got to find a better way.

By a front end developer, for front end developers. Let me know how I might make it better.

Planned additions include

True file format support (add .jpg and you get a real jpg etc) Right now you can add an extension but it still serves up a gif.

Easier syntax for making squares (/250 would work instead of typing /250x250)

Ability to change the background color

There is a Firefox extension called dust me selectors that accomplishes the same thing. I have been using it for years.

For people just learning HTML: I think they would have an easier time if they were taught that HTML tags mean something rather than perform a function. I know when I was learning HTML you would use tags to make a document look a certain way much like you would use MS Paint to draw a picture. The web has evolved and HTML takes care of describing what the content is. That's a big difference. Wouldn't the concept of "Use whatever tags you want to describe your content but here is a list of ones that are already reserved for other functions." be simple enough to pick up? It's the same idea with programming.

Updating HTML standard: That's what the doctype could be for, for introducing new tags and functionality without breaking the old. Atleast that is what the doctype should be used for.
