kingkandu··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Twitter is a weird one because I absolutely hate using it and as someone who's built many feeds I can see how they're trying to farm engagement at the cost of their user's health.

But it is simultaneously the best place to get real time information and after reddit the best place to find human/bot generated content so I do still need access to the data.

Trusting Zuck to fill the gap with Threads is a moron's endeavour and Mastadon is too fragmented we need a centralized good actor to fix this.

kingkandu··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Whatever you do just stop doing OS updates after 2 years of owning any device these guys make if you don't want to be forced into an upgrade cycle

Don't fall for the security patch fearmongering

kingkandu··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I have ~4-5 completely non technical friends who've used LLMs to generate their personal websites, complete with appointment scheduling and payment links. We can't be more than a year out for full store generation with 1 click upload to hosting providers.

I don't think Shopify needs to exist anymore sadly.

kingkandu··on iPhone Duo
Never thought I'd say this but welcome to 3 years ago Apple hardware
kingkandu··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
I mean not having voice transcription in a document editor is kind of dumb

But not having some shitty clippy-like help system is very nice

kingkandu··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
closedAI should give this guy a million bucks and fire everyone internally who was involved with trying to recreate his work and threatening him.

but they probably won't and if it's happened on some obscure math research it's happening everyday everywhere else.

Fully local AI compute can't come fast enough, these guys have IP theft baked into their bones.

kingkandu··on Tesla killing Solar Roof is leaving installers with six-figure losses
Tesla is not and was never about the products and actual business. It's a shit business.

Its about hype farming so idiots take leveraged positions in the stock and get wiped out.

If you see Elon saying something particularly distasteful or stupid he is collecting puts to liquidate.

kingkandu··on Bing Wallpaper showing Ad for Harry Potter and Fantastic beasts box set
I would've paid 5x for a unshittified windows build. WSL is a truly impressive VM for dev work.

But I had to go to Linux and I suspect MicroSuck is in very deep financial shit with LibreOffice and Linux offering far better user experiences.

kingkandu··on Chrome again exempts Google from user site data settings
ungoogled-chromium is where it's at
kingkandu··on VC isn't VC anymore
The 2 groups getting fucked with the stay private longer trend are the LPs and the startup employees.

We should insist on public policy forcing public money into only public assets. It's the obvious sensible rule.

And company safes need to start including a clause where all classes of vested equity are offered buyouts in equal proportions. So VCs can't keep paying founders/each other on the way up while zeroing out common stock and eventually selling company IP for around the liquidity preference to some "totally unrelated" entity. Realistically this will only happen if YC gets onboard but I doubt Garry tan is the guy who can show this kind of spine.

kingkandu··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
In Silicon Valley, every acquihire that zeros out common stock while giving lumpsums + golden handcuffs to the founders is fraud where the victims are employees without legal protections.

Happens everyday. YC was doing some lip service about addressing this like 10 years ago and never did shit because failed founders and employees are essential fuel for the machine.

kingkandu··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
I grew up a total Microsoft fanboy but Windows today is sadly nothing but a bloated piece of spyware. It's like they rebuilt Clippy, called it Copilot, and somehow managed to make it shittier.

I run a machine that costs ~$40k so I don't expect this to happen overnight but at this point it's absolutely inevitable that Linux overtakes it in the consumer market.

Every little thing that made Linux inaccessible to a normal non techie is now solved by speaking to some model and having it configure/fix the thing.

kingkandu··on If you don't opt out by Apr 24 GitHub will train on your private repos
Sorry doesn't help at all but you can still be useful - can you please tell us how many private repos do "users of Free, Pro and Pro+ Copilot" who have used Copilot in the last 90 days exist in the github database?

Because microsuck is about to violate the law that many times

kingkandu··on U.S. mandates more foreign travelers to pay $15,000 visa bond deposits
It is almost impossible to get international people to come to the US anymore, the few people who are willing to visit can't get visa appointments at the consulate.

Wouldn't be surprised if the World Cup sees half empty stadiums this year and tourism related places like Vegas continue to draw down.

kingkandu··on Kagi releases alpha version of Orion for Linux
Loved Orion but had to switch to Zen because they had an awful Picture-in-picture implementation and no mouse gesture support, both features I use heavily

Regardless, anything that works toward dethroning the 2 worst spyware distros in the world i.e. windows and osx I must support heavily
