kinghajj··on M1 Ultra Geekbench Score
I'm almost certain that the L1 caches on the M1 ultra are being reported incorrectly. That 512 KiB on the AMD CPU is the sum of data and instruction cache across all cores. M1 performance cores have 192 KiB of instruction cache and 128 KiB of data cache per core; and the efficiency cores have 128/64 KiB of instruction and data caches, respectively.

16*(192+128)+4*(128+64) = 5888 KiB of L1 cache on the M1 ultra.

kinghajj··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
The goal of Lojban's lexicon generation wasn't to make the vocabulary easy for everyone to learn, but to remove bias in word generation so that no region or language family would have any advantage over others in learning the language.
kinghajj··on Spotify Removing Neil Young's Music
Neil was never one who questioned all authority. From "The Needle and the Damage Done":

> I sing the song because I love the man

> I know that some of you don't understand

> Milk blood to keep from running out

> I've seen the needle and the damage done

> A little part of it in everyone

> But every junkie's like a settin' sun

e.g., he "loves the man" for keeping heroin illegal, because he's seen how it ruins lives firsthand.

kinghajj··on The curious case of the Raspberry Pi in the network closet (2019)
Wait, was it common for 1U servers to have optical drives back in the day?

... I don't get it? Who is "Madeline" supposed to represent?
kinghajj··on The history of Unix's confusing set of low-level ways to allocate memory (2018)
This brought back memories from college, when I tried to write my own C memory allocator. It was decidedly simple and extremely inefficient (pretty sure it used linked lists...), but after much hacking I did eventually get it to work with some small CLI programs using the LD_PRELOAD trick... but when I tried launching Gimp, the inefficiency quickly became apparent. I think eventually the splash screen did come up, but I never gave it enough time fully to start!

My implementation used brk()/sbrk() exclusively, but I thought about re-implementing with mmap(). Hell, maybe I can try to write an allocator in Rust and expose a C-compatible interface.

kinghajj··on Microsoft Edge GA on Linux
Maybe that's it, I'm not working with large data sets. My use case is more like "track all of my salary, dividend, and capital gains, and estimate how much extra I need to pay in taxes." :)
kinghajj··on Microsoft Edge GA on Linux
I finally caved and got myself a copy, because the spreadsheet capabilities of Excel are still unrivaled compared to free alternatives. If you watch the classic "You suck at Excel" video, you'll see that there are numerous actions the presenter does that do not have analogs in LibreOffice nor Google Sheets. The table feature is probably the one I miss the most; in fact, I really like how in the Mac program Numbers, all sheets are multi-table by default. It makes it much easier to group parts of the sheet into logical sections, and to extend one table without affecting the others.
kinghajj··on Tim Sweeney: Tax bill would likely end founder control of independent companies
It looks like Epic Games is a private company, so from what I understand in the proposal, this wouldn't affect him, since his shares are not publicly tradable. The proposal might affect him when/if he were to sell any shares, though, since it has a provision to accrue tax liability on illiquid assets like art/etc, to be owed at time of sale.

> No, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in the US are booked as indefinitely lived intangibles.

> That means that if the asset falls below their most recently booked price at any point in the quarter, they are required to book an impairment charge in the amount of the drop. If it goes up, they cannot book the profit until they sell.

kinghajj··on Bitcoin Hits New All-Time High Above $65K on Strength of ETF Debut
Keep holding until the sell orders I have trigger, then put the after tax proceeds into my brokerage. If it goes up more, sell repeat. Never plan to sell 100% of my holdings. Once my brokerage account and/or the portion of my stash on crypto interest platforms is enough to provide a generous regular income, FIRE.

kinghajj··on Intel is reducing server chip pricing in attempt to stem the AMD tide
No, it simply means that the market conditions changed. The price could very well have been a fair market value before, and still is a fair market value after; and the delta of these prices reflects the impact of the new conditions.
kinghajj··on The US could default on its debt by October
So what happened between 1996 and 2013 to make the debt ceiling not a perennial issue?
kinghajj··on Some sketchy behavior coming out of the SEC recently
Serious question, under this test, why shouldn't an ordinary savings account be considered a security? Do banks just have a grandfathered exemption?
kinghajj··on Some sketchy behavior coming out of the SEC recently
I know of at least BlockFi, which is based out of New Jersey.
kinghajj··on Reddit bans anti-vaccine subreddit r/NoNewNormal after site-wide protest
"Witnesses report hearing noises emanating from the grave of one Aaron Swartz."

I know this conversation has happened numerous times on HN by now, but at times like this I can't help but speak up. Although I have matured over the past decade, no longer the "Ron Paul" libertarian of my college days, and I understand the nuances w.r.t large public platforms facilitating misinformation; there still exists a part in me that pines for the "old Reddit," and laments that all attempts to remake platforms with liberal free-speech policies have come from far-right extremists.

kinghajj··on AWS US-WEST-2 region (Oregon) is having issues
This is hitting our customer environments. The first alert came in at 11:14am PDT, and the most recent one at 12:05pm. Since then, though, things have been quiet.
kinghajj··on Second largest US mortgage lender will accept crypto payments this year
Yes, both the purchaser and seller would need to pay capital gains taxes on the realized appreciation in the digital asset and real property, respectively.
kinghajj··on Poly Network hacker returns $258M after stealing $600M
ATM machines aren't marketed that "their code is law," whereas that's an explicitly espoused property of smart contracts.
kinghajj··on Windows 96
You could probably make an argument that it's a parody/satire.
kinghajj··on Pelosi and a lifetime of trading
No, the reporting delay between when trades are made and then made public is something like ~1 month, IIRC.
kinghajj··on Pelosi and a lifetime of trading
I think there'd be room for covered calls & married puts in a politician's portfolio. The "collar" strategy is great for preserving one's capital. They should still be managed in blind trusts, though.
kinghajj··on Treat Kubernetes clusters as cattle, not pets
Also the fact that a new EKS cluster takes at least 20 minutes to come up and be ready, makes AWS' offering the weakest among the Big Three cloud vendors.

kinghajj··on The incel lexicon: Deciphering the emergent cryptolect of a global community
To add on to what others have replied, there is a "men's rights" movement called "men's liberation," which embraces feminism and its critique of patriarchy, focusing on how that system has hurt men, but not vilifying women in the process.
