I'm less about the "code challenges" that some companies do, because that's usually just a lame useless task. I'm more about giving potential hires a real feature we want to make, or bug we want to fix, and see if they can do a quick rev 1 of it.
Sysadmin work is also really horrible, though I would say it's unneeded these days with the help of services like Heroku.
Check out the photos! our first purchase was a foosball table ;) We also had one of our interns working with us in the "office"
We since moved off to Dogpatch Labs in San Francisco, which became a bit too distracting to code in everyday, so I usually just work from a small home office that has three walls of windows =)
If you really understand porn, and you're not the kind of person to take on everything associated with it, go for it. But I think the question and suggestion is rather: "would you start a company based on an impulsive emotion, even if it's something society has branded as a sin?"
I can see betting, smoking, drugs, that kind of thing all falling into the same category.
If you're able to find something that hasn't been struck down as horrible, then go for it.
Treat all news sources the same way, it shouldn't be too bad.
The Hackers and Founders meetup is fun. I went to the first one that happened at DPL. The keg is a nice touch to the DPL events.
It has some really nice designs that are more trendy now a days than ever before. UX less tried as usual, but looks visually cool and super modern.
If it's a late night gathering, I love going to the Pub in Albany/North Berkeley. Awesome atmosphere, awesome belgian beers. Pretty cool people there too. it's well lit, no music, so it's easy to talk and hang out in.
With enough experience, you'll know how to start writing something such that it won't require extensive refactoring. Make sure it's good enough that if you don't have enough time, it's still good in these two major ways: as fast as possible with no redundancy, maintainable by someone else.
With filters, using the +blah functionality (email+spam@gmail.com for example), it works great! Never need anything else.
gotta count on the HN folk to really get down into it. you guys have awesome feedback.
1. Yup, the "at" is basically for the regular season pro teams in American sports. We'll be fixing this soon for all other situations 2. If the guy was your friend, would that be more useful? Like in real life? 3. The server is OK, we haven't implemented any polling yet to the page. It started off as a quick check-in, leave, and come back tool early on. Our roadmap includes a smart decaying poller that will update the page often. A lot of our users now just refresh, nobody's complained too much yet, but we definitely need to get that in ASAP. 4. Definitely need something that says: "You can be anywhere!"
Thank you for trying it out and giving us the feedback even though you aren't a huge sport fan. We appreciate it!! Hopefully we can cover more big events like World Cup, Olympics, Formula 1, etc. where you'll use it.
We're fleshing out all those features (play-by-play) and more very soon.
Some other cool stuff we'll notify you about are really close games that are almost ending, big comebacks, or blowouts/upsets from you or your friends' favorite teams.
Love to hear what other specific notifications you'd like to see!
We love avid sports fans, definitely send us an email with anything else you'd like. We hope to make something you guys really like.
Working with the leagues and teams are tough, but we're going to try to work with them more on cool stuff like audio and video.
Sharing photos and video will be a sweet feature. I'd probably post a million photos myself while I'm at the game ;)
Great ideas! keep them coming.
