kimusan··on Tachyon Mail – taking over where snappymail left
Hi all, You might know that Snappymail has been the favorite webmail client for many self-hosters for years. Unfortunately, the developer kind of abandoned it due to personal reasons and it was left to rot. I decided back in June to fork the project and get it up to date in terms of dependencies. It however ended up being much more than that and eventually turned into Tachyon Mail. If you know snappymail (or rainloop) you will feel right at home, but the UI has gotten a serious cleanup, caldav calendar support has been added, multi-folder search, dark/light mode, modern nextcloud integration, and much much more has been added. Tachyon mail has already been downloaded more than 2000 times and a good community is already building around it - reporting issues and posting PRs. Hope you like it.
kimusan··on Show HN: Hacker Herald – like HN but with crowdsourced pics and subtitles
I would love to get this for the different HN categories like "ask" and "show" (I personally use the "show" part way more than the noisy frontpage)
kimusan··on ExectOS – brand new operating system which derives from NT architecture
I personally would have a hard time identifying any advantages that has not been superseded by modern OSes
kimusan··on Show HN: Statusduck – Website monitoring tool where the data is public
Nice service.

A small comment. Let the url input be case insensitive (the https + domain part of course). Using it from mobile often set first H in https as uppercase and this mails your site fail.

kimusan··on Show HN: Oxen.ai – Fast Unstructured Data Version Control
Would it make sence to use it on large code bases - i.e. not AI data?
kimusan··on Show HN: I made a programming music playlist
I mostly listen to metal when coding - actually, most of my colleagues do too.
kimusan··on Show HN: I created a minimal, secure, terminal native chat application
love the idea, hate the fact that it is written in a bloated language that is anything but native or self-contained.
kimusan··on Show HN: I reduced my shower time from 30 minutes to 5 with an app I built
5mins showers? that's crazy. Why waste so much time in the shower every day.
kimusan··on Show HN: ReCalendar – custom calendar generator for ReMarkable and e-ink tablets
Love the product - even for printing it is very nice.
kimusan··on Show HN: Hacker News client with a twist
I like the design - too bad that HN does not allow for you to add comment support. That would make it perfect
kimusan··on Show HN: Tabji – A privacy-first lightweight alternative to The Great Suspender
Looks interesting. It is not very clear to me where the "plrivacy-first" comes in.
kimusan··on Show HN: Encrypted emails based on Signal protocol with post-quantum algorithms
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
kimusan··on Show HN: Public SSH Jump and Port Forwarding Server
any way to use this for e.g. vnc forwarding directly? I mean, I can set it to be available via ssh but would that work?

ssh someuser@ssh-j.com -N -R some-pc:5901:localhost:5901

Now do I reach this from my vnc? I need the "someuser" and -J part when connecting? Would I have to setup another ssh connection from my local pc to ssh-j and then use localhost:5901 in vnc?

kimusan··on Show HN: Feature rich messaging app for the terminal
Looks very nice. Would be nice to be able to get a public chatroom list like in IRC.
kimusan··on Show HN: Infection Simulation
The article is from Washington Post

kimusan··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
This is my favorite git commit: https://android-review.googlesource.com/c/platform/system/bt...

kimusan··on Ask HN: How did you build up your personal knowledge base?
I have used dnote locally for a short while and love it. Unfortunately I cannot connect to the "pro" server (company restrictions), so I am running my own dnote server for this. Works very nice except for a few minor bugs (which reminded me to get them reported on github). Any plans to make the browser extention configurable so it can work with a self-hosted server?
kimusan··on Ask HN: What are some more authentic online forums?
Forums? naaah IRC is the place to be
kimusan··on Nasa Happily Reports the Earth Is Greener
It was actually identified that most of the green areas are now farming land/cropland and NOT forests.
kimusan··on I've spent the last two years building a new email client
looks nice - too bad it is not available for Linux.
kimusan··on iPhones may shut down in cold weather
We had -20C the other day. My samsung S8 was perfectly fine while in my pocket. At one point i placed it on my outdoor table and within a minute it showed a warning and then closed down (correctly closing down - not dying/crashing).
kimusan··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
goatse.cx .... or not!
kimusan··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
I shifted to Feedly and it easily imported all my google reader feeds. Today I have a couple of thousand feeds in Feedly and still find it a bliss to read through them. Their mobile app is quite good too. I ended up buying their Pro lifetime subscription and it has been worth the money sofar.
kimusan··on Ask HN: It's 2018, tabs or spaces?
Spaces, now and forever.
kimusan··on PSA: Disable JavaScript. Meltdown/Spectre exploits are live
Its actually the page of one of the researchers (Michael Schwarz) who found the javascript keystroke timing attack (which is in the paper in the link). He is also one of the authors of the Meltdown/Spectre CPU Attack papers so the document is actually worth reading
kimusan··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
I have had dual GPU in my last two laptops and it has worked just fine in ubuntu with the Nvidia-prime support. there. With Wayland you can now scale everything so the HiDPI matches your needs (it is still in experimental but works just fine)
kimusan··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
I only have personal experience with the infinitybook 13" so that is, of course, my preference. A few friends of mine have other 15" books from tuxedo and they seem to be quite happy about the hardware.
kimusan··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en makes Linux optimized laptops with nice design and good hardware. I have one of their infinity books myself and it gives me 5-7 hours of battery if I do heavy work like compiling or crypto mining. Their EULA even allows you to tinker with the hardware (like adding more memory/disk) without losing guarantee etc. Their support is good and they communicate very well in English even though they are located in Germany.
kimusan··on How much does an electric standing desk cost?
Around here they are pretty cheap but they are also required in all offices by law (it can be a non-electric version but a person has to be able to raise the table on his own).
kimusan··on Show HN: A simple, tiny Vim and kilo-inspired editor
cloned the source and tried to build....failed. had to add -lm -ldl and remove -Werror in the Makefile in order to get it to even build. After that I got a binary "e" but running it just exits right away without any output. Seems like a bit more work needs to go into this editor before it is ready for the public :-)

tested on Ubuntu Linux
