While PPI has stayed mostly static (which is a good engineering choice), plenty of other display parameters have improved: better contrast, faster response times, deeper colour, larger continuous surfaces. The 2015 MacBook display was impressive. Modern panels are too!
For context, 20/20 vision is the ability to perceive 1 arcminute of angular resolution. Beyond that point there are diminishing returns.
To see what this looks like for different viewing distances: https://www.desmos.com/calculator/dtrszipgmd (black line is mm, red line in freedom units, green is 220PPI reference).
There's also some potential crossover in how these may be perceived. For example, experiments which show you may in fact be able to 'hear' through your fingers; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-06855-8.
To add to the 'see also' list, the Australian Government Style Manual (https://www.stylemanual.gov.au) is another great reference.
The White Rabbit Project [3] also extends it to the picosecond realm for research control and instrumentation systems.
Not a scratch on this project though.

You have around 150ms of one-way latency before perceptual quality starts to nose dive (see https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-G.114-200305-I). This includes the capture, processing, transmission, decoding, and reproduction of signals. Throw in some acoustic propagation delay at either end in room scale systems and milliseconds count.
It's lake islands all the way down...
When a grid’s misaligned
with another behind
That’s a moiré…
When the spacing is tight
And the difference is slight
That’s a moiréThis is uncomfortably accurate. I work with the capture side of these system and people in that space care deeply about the integrity of the signal, but have little concern for what it contains. Archival is the inverse: the information content of the signal is what's important, not the signal itself.
Particularly with growing token counts, you can have a pen pal, virtual colleague, or friend to bounce ideas off, return to previous thoughts, and chat to in cases where a real one may not exist or be available. A little ELIZA-esque, but adaptable to different needs.
My only concern is this would be be primed for misuse by people already experiencing isolation to further retreat miss opportunity to grow real social connections. Also, any semblance of privacy over those mediums would be a nightmare.

Obviously highly dependant on what you do. After being heavily screen only for most of my professional life, having the ability to print off a table sized drawing of an engineering diagram, review it, mark it up, and work with others in that process is really nice. It’s definitely more efficient in pure IO terms to work solely in the digital realm, but the forced interaction barriers help provide a little more room for rough thought before returning there for fine tuning.
