kilolima··on Transcript of taped conversations among German nuclear physicists (1945)
Two wrongs don't make a right?

Why can't we admit that the Allies committed their own war crimes and move on?

kilolima··on Home Taping Is Killing Music: When the music industry waged war on the cassette
I can see the value in the streaming services for this because it's easy and convenient. However, it's also fun to discover new music on your own ("pull" versus "push" for content discovery) by researching genres or musical influences/history (Wikipedia has really well organized tags for this) and then just downloading a few GB via your friendly torrent network. Sure, "piracy", but if the music is over a few decades old then it should be public domain anyways.
kilolima··on Compromised Microsoft key: More impactful than we thought
Should we just legalize the FAANGs to engage in cyber warfare/espionage against each other? Seems like then they would have to reach a minimum of best security practice instead of relying on obscurity.
kilolima··on FBI improperly used 702 surveillance powers on US senator
Women do it all the time...
kilolima··on FBI improperly used 702 surveillance powers on US senator
What about a system that could encourage partial retirement into part time service industries or consulting? Or to working at non-profits, subsidized by retirement funds. Of course this is already the case, but if it was formalized it could continue to help offset the retirement gap and provide a meaningful opportunities to retirees, and retirement could be seen as an opportunity to pursue a long sought secondary interest or make a difference, rather than being a net drain on society.
kilolima··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
For example, Gaia Maps. It's just a navigation app using publicly funded USGS or crowd sourced base maps, but by switching over to a user account requirement, they can con people into paying a monthly subscription for map "updates".

If you're going to rip people off with "software as a service" then you need to require an account.

kilolima··on Where in the USA is this?
Google maps is a crime against cartography. The two most important elements of a map are usually absent: a north arrow and a scale.
kilolima··on Douglas Hofstadter changes his mind on Deep Learning and AI risk
He's fluent in Lisp, so that would qualify him as a programmer, unless you think that only Silicon Valley wage slaves can be "programmers".

kilolima··on Douglas Hofstadter changes his mind on Deep Learning and AI risk
The parent comment strikes me as an uninformed smear. Have you read any Hofstadter? It's hardly mass market scientific summary as you seem to think. And his career was in philosophy of mind and computer science, not just as a somewhat popular author.

His writing is a bit more complex than the hallucinations of an llm.

kilolima··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Are they going to provide a pay raise for the lost time commuting or do they just expect their employees to take a quality of life hit without recompense?
kilolima··on Don't let Reddit kill 3rd party apps
Reddit expects its users to work for free.
kilolima··on Amazon removes books from Kindle Unlimited after they appear on pirate sites
You're not doing the right thing if you're helping to enforce DRM. This removes power from both authors and readers to Amazon's benefit. If you want to do the right thing, buy a physical book and then pirate the ebook.
kilolima··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
So would it be fair to say that Apple built the iPod to take advantage of music piracy?
kilolima··on United Flight 1722 came within 775 feet of plunging into Pacific Ocean
This article attempts to combine isolated incidents into an overall problem with aviation safety. However, having flown into OGG multiple times, I think this is another example of the typical extreme wind shear/turbulence at this airport and not connected to wider issues. I was in a SW flight that bounced twice and aborted while attempting to land. The airport is located in a difficult location given the high winds that wrap around Haleakala. An older airport a few miles to the south and Maui's first civilian airport, Puunene, was abandoned due to these problems (after racking up an impressive number of killed naval aviators in its wartime role as an USN training field).
kilolima··on QGIS is the mapping software you didn't know you needed
Good question! Also why isn't there a Linux version? Maybe there is some collusion somewhere between two of the major monopolies in desktop computing?
kilolima··on QGIS is the mapping software you didn't know you needed
Is this an advertisement for esri or a meaningful comment on using QGIS?
kilolima··on QGIS is the mapping software you didn't know you needed
Nice maps but why do you have to share with the world a map of North Shore surf spots?

kilolima··on Stone tablet shows Babylonians able to approximate √2 with 99.9999% accuracy
There's no Egyptian record of Moses, Passover, or the Exodus. Religious fabrications are hardly relevant for a discussion of ancient mathematics.
kilolima··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
With KeePass, the trivial solution for this situation could just be a second subset database of relevant accounts on a thumb drive, with the password known to family individuals. That seems easier than relying on a cloud provider and some sort of half-baked insecure emergency access mode.
kilolima··on Linux, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft want to break the Google Maps monopoly
Or Google could hire humans to do tech support and address these kind of problems directly. But we know that Google's profitability is in part because they have dispensed with the idea that you can phone someone to report a problem and get a fix. But there could be a simpler human solution to this problem rather than a legal or technical one.
kilolima··on Valve is paying open-source developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and more
The best pirated game scenes are Russian, Valve exiting the market world mean very little. It's also a huge benefit to the rest of the world that Russian/ex Soviet culture has both very little respect for Western intellectual property laws and the technological abilities to make software and digital media easily available.

kilolima··on Administrators Have Seized the Ivory Tower
Identifying logical fallacies is a 1-pass spam removal system. Identifying and blanket dismissing arguments based on logical fallacies reduces the low-effort noise and allows the worthwhile arguments to be heard.

kilolima··on Valve Introduces Proton Next
It's not just DRM, it's also an advertising profile and software usage monitoring application. Recording the number of hours I play a game or which game is about as invasive as when the Patriot Act tried to go after public library patron records.

GOG provides offline archive installers. A web browser can be used to both browse the GOG catalog and download updates. An app store's walled garden mimicking that behavior is not required.

Is it true that steam limits concurrent access to one's catalog, or prevents other family members from accessing the same account for a game if a different one is being played? Digital products should not be made to artificially suffer the limitations of real-world objects.

As for mods, some GOG games can't access the steam workshop recently. This is bad for the longetivity of the game and it's success, and of course for modders and players.

And I believe that there is still a steam runtime that games check for, even if launching outside of Steam. If I wanted random corporate software blobs running all the time on my computer, I would use a Mac or Wintel machine and call it a feature.
