killwhitey··on New banner ads push actual Google results to bottom 12% of the screen
The main difference seems to be that today even getting the top organic search result doesn't provide enough clicks for advertisers, so they feel obliged to purchase ads for their own brand names even when they already rank first.

It should be noted that this instance is simply a test and should not be taken as an indication of how these ads will be purchased. While I'm sure there will be numerous advertisers who feel the need to have a large banner when their specific brand is searched for, I expect them to be in the minority. The real question is will I be seeing a banner for Southwest when I search for JetBlue.

killwhitey··on Modern Minimalism
I find it a little curious that most commenters here are focusing on his mention of not using soap, but not asking about how his source of income, food, or shelter. That iPhone 5 comes with a monthly bill and requires recharging daily.
killwhitey··on Facebook Tells Parse Developers “No Plans To Change How App Data Is Used”
They dropped Twitter card support so you can no longer preview Instagram photos on twitter or inside the twitter apps.
killwhitey··on Will Google Hang Up on Voice?
I've been using Google Voice for SMS for years now, and the threading issue is still a constant bother. For those who've never used it, Voice splits messages into different threads, but is completely opaque about how it does this, resulting in conversations with a person split up seemingly randomly.

I got a long text a few days ago from someone that had to be split into three. The first and third part was attached to the previous conversation, and the second part started a new one. No idea why it does this, but the fact that I've been searching online for an answer since 2010 and still don't have one is worrisome.

killwhitey··on US free to grab EU data on American clouds
>If you cannot trust the justice system or the government you fight, vote, motivate people, organize etc to change them and how they work.

Yes, but what if you don't live in the same country as the government you don't trust? Should I try get the people and politicians in the EU to back a war against the US?

killwhitey··on _why is a role, not a person
>So what makes a zebra a zebra then? I don’t want to get into it, but basically, I take the position that you can’t define something by what it is, you have to define it by what it does.

I like that the author doesn't embarrass himself by attempting to define a Zebra by what it does.

killwhitey··on Google Designing 'X Phone' to Rival Apple, Samsung
>And in contrast to Apple tradition, they priced the iPhone at a level that made it impossible for new entrants to compete on price in a meaningful way, due to the nature of carrier subsidies.

Then why did they reduce the price by $200 after a few months on the market?

killwhitey··on Facebook Admits Too Much Facebook Probably Isn’t Healthy
People who spend the most time on facebook have the least to share.
killwhitey··on Facebook says it isn’t building a Windows 8 app
Facebook said the same thing about developing an iPad app, and they stuck by that for a long time. It wasn't until three facebook apps made by third parties dominated the app store in number of downloads that they decided it was worth making their own.
killwhitey··on I Just Paid Facebook $7
Ideally you would hear about your friends getting engaged without Facebook.
killwhitey··on A Guy Who Saw Lincoln Get Shot Was on a TV Show in 1956
The video was uploaded Apr 11, 2009, which makes it a bit more than 6 months old.
killwhitey··on Shut up and play nice: How the Western world is limiting free speech
This would be a good strategy to stop state sponsored attacks, but what about the rest? What about the World Trade Center attacks? The 2002 Bali bombings? The 2005 London bombings?

Youtube does, and is used as a main music player for a lot of people.
killwhitey··on You Either Die A Hero Or You Become The Villain
All the people I want to interact with regularly use Twitter/Facebook. There have been a few more attractive options that I would like them to move to (G+, Path, etc.), but they haven't budged. Now here's a new alternative that thinks they should pay to use a service they're already getting for free. Good luck trying to convince them, because I'm not going to bother this time.
killwhitey··on Grid (YC S12) Reinvents The Spreadsheet For The Tablet Age
Maybe I'm just not familiar with modern usage of the word 'spreadsheet' but when I hear it I instantly think of accounting worksheets, visicalc, excel and the like. If the very core of this app isn't the same as a classic spreadsheet app, why even throw that word around? It's bad marketing.
killwhitey··on 9GAG (YC S12) Raises $2.8M
>9GAG is Reddit for the 90%.

Content is created in the chaos that is discussion boards (4chan, SA before that). Then it is peer reviewed on aggregators (Reddit, Digg before that), and finally it is distributed to the masses in an easy to read format (9gag, tumblr, FB, etc.)

The problem is the lower the food chain you go the greater the resentment you see people have. People on reddit hate 9gag, people on reddit.com/new hate redditors that only view the front page, people on 4chan hate redditors for copying (or stealing) their memes. And everyone hates that the original message/humor gets lost or diluted each time to goes up a level.

Now you may not think that's a problem, but people on 4chan sure as hell don't want to see 9gag succeed, and the people who create the most content also create the most mischief.

killwhitey··on Conflict Over How Open ‘Do Not Track’ Talks Will Be
>The advertising group, however, defines it as forbidding the serving of targeted ads to individuals but not prohibiting the collection of data.

Astounding.
