killion··on Jeff Varasano's NY Pizza Recipe (2008)
I have the Ooni Koda 16. I’ll sear a steak on it occasionally in a cast iron pan. I heat the pan in the oven and then pull it out and sear while on a trivet. I find putting the pan in the oven while cooking isn’t needed.

The pan will hit more than 1,000° so it will sear off the seasoning as well. So you’ll need to reseason it afterwards. That is why I don’t do it often.

killion··on U.S. Senate Democrats roll out draft bill to legalize weed
I'm surprised this is just hitting HN now since it happened last month.

But I look forward to being able to use credit cards with services like Sava. The last time I used a delivery service they could take cash or sketchy apps which link to your debit card.

killion··on Xerox Alto Emulator
You are right, I thought the Star was just the commercialized version of the Alto. The Star looks much more like the Xerox Docutech that I got to use a little bit in school.
killion··on Xerox Alto Emulator
It also reminds me that computer magazines were ~500 pages when I was a kid.
killion··on Xerox Alto Emulator
It's a very different experience than I expected. When I think of the Alto I think of a windowing operating system but this boots into a command line. I've tried out most of the available disks but haven't yet found one that feels like a predecessor to the Apple Lisa.

It's a great project that is really well done, it's the actual experience of the Alto that surprised.

killion··on A $100k Prize for a Decentralized Inflation Dashboard
I distrust any website who prevents me from using the back button to leave their site.

Browsers should prevent pushing to history if I haven’t clicked.

killion··on Npm Audit: broken by design?
I like his point about `npm audit --production` being a good way to cut down the noise. But Github doesn't seem to take dev dependencies into account when sending security alerts. I get emails about non-issues from them all the time.
killion··on The Connection Machines CM-1 and CM-2 (2015)
We had a Thinking Machine at the University of Minnesota. The person who was in charge of it learned to determine if the code running on it was efficient by watching the patterns of the LEDs.
killion··on Satellite imagery shows Northern California kelp forests have collapsed
Thank you for sharing this, I hope they find a California location soon. Because they are filter-feeders I would guess they are as helpful as oyster farms for cleaning the water. As long as they are contained that is.
killion··on Spectre in JavaScript
Same here, this article about the designer of the Spectre box put it at the top of mind...

killion··on Association between egg consumption and risk of cardiovascular outcomes
I would like to see more than the summary. Is there a way to get access?

I’m interested because I was on a low-carb high-fat diet where I ate 3 eggs a day – that was until I got a blood test that showed very high cholesterol. Now I’ve cut dietary cholesterol and I’m on statins. It’s much harder to maintain weight loss this way.

killion··on Unbroken Enigma Message
I had the exact same thought. There is no feeling like the frustration of a disappointing ending after being engrossed in a Neal Stephenson book.

When they were paper books at least you could throw them across the room. Now that would break my phone.

killion··on Unbroken Enigma Message
So it looks like there is only one unbroken message left, the others have been broken between 2012-2017. The Enigma@Home project appears to be on hold while they look at different ways of solving. Am I understanding this correctly?
killion··on Tesla unveils new Model S with new interior, crazy steering wheel, and more
I wonder if the yoke will actually see production. It seems like it would make 3 point turns very difficult.
killion··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
I still haven't received one, I'll update this comment if I do.

-edit- I just received it at 2:42 pm pst

killion··on Apple’s longtime supplier accused of using forced labor in China
Not only do all those other companies use the same manufacturers they use literally the same manufacturer and people and facilities from this article... Lens Technology.

And yet the headline only says Apple. I asked why HN also used Apple in the headline given it is inaccurate in another comment but that was downvoted.

killion··on Apple’s longtime supplier accused of using forced labor in China
Does HN have to use the same Apple-baiting headline as The Washington Post? Lens Technology sells to all mobile phone makers. They are a massive public company with many customers...

killion··on The Life in the Simpsons Is No Longer Attainable
When I read the article I was surprised that Frank Grimes wasn’t mentioned at all. He appeared in 1997 so after just 8 seasons the premise had collapsed.
killion··on Going All in on the Mac App Store
Reeder did a really great job of dealing with this. I use Reeder 4 and got a one time modal on launch that Reeder 5 exists and what the potential reasons to upgrade would be.
killion··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
We went from a Model S to a Model 3 and this is my only complaint. The steering wheel stalks are terrible on the 3. But are perfectly normal on the S.

I prefer everything else about the 3.

killion··on Experts are sounding the alarm about the hidden dangers of gas stoves
There is a limit to the height you can tilt but you definitely can on the units I've used. I sear and baste in cast iron very often. If you lift it too high the stove will warn you that it does not detect a pan.
killion··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
I like how he went into real detail. I had signed up to be a poll worker in Alameda County, California but they had more than enough volunteers so I didn't get a chance to get called up myself and see how things happen.
killion··on New Zealand is about to test long-range wireless power transmission
I was wondering how the 70% efficiency compares to copper. I assume copper isn't 100% efficient, but how efficient is it?

Thanks for answering questions here!

killion··on Thoughts on Voice Interfaces
So many great points. I'm very happy to hear that someone is thinking of the UX. I only wished they worked on Siri.

The only addition I can think of is during the wake word section. I'd like to remove the wake word requirement if I'm in the middle of an interaction.

For example, sending a text on Siri.

"Hey Siri text my wife. Tell her I'm on my way"

Siri shows me the text and then I have to again say "Hey Siri send it" when just "Send it" should do.

killion··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
"the credit defaults during the debt ceiling brinksmanship of the Obama presidency"

What a strange way to try and pin what the Republicans did in 2011 and 2013 on Obama.

For context here is what actually happened... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_debt-ceiling_cri...

killion··on Amazon Warehouse scam: 16TB HDD swapped for 8TB, returned for full refund
I’ve had this happen to me multiple times with Apple keyboards and mice for the office. They are listed as brand new and sold by Amazon. But they are clearly used when you open the box.
killion··on Databricks acquires Redash
We went from Periscope to Redash for the cost savings but haven’t missed a thing. It’s fast and has an intuitive UI. I hope it continues on.
killion··on Stitch Fix to Lay off About 1,400 Employees in California
Yeah, I was surprised when I found out this is how it works. When I first signed up with a PEO I assumed it was all taken care of. But then they handed me a big list of states I needed to register with and all the very antiquated processes each of them uses.
killion··on Stitch Fix to Lay off About 1,400 Employees in California
In that case it's very simple for the company paying but much more work for the employee since they are the ones responsible for taxes. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I've found many employees don't want to do it. They need to make sure they are either paying their estimated taxes quarterly or be saving a significant portion of their income.

That also doesn't address that it is significantly cheaper for group health insurance in the US vs. individual. As a company I can be paying $400/mo vs. the employee who would be paying $2K for similar coverage.

killion··on Stitch Fix to Lay off About 1,400 Employees in California
Some states have worker’s compensation monopolies so you have to buy it from the state.

All states require that you register as a company there and pay taxes.

There are PEOs like Justworks that act as the employer and file taxes for you. But you still have to register first and then assign the company to the PEO.

In short it varies a lot and that doesn’t take into account things like local laws on compensation.

I say this as a founder of a remote-first startup registered in 12 states.
