kilimounjaro··on I fought in Ukraine and here's why FPV drones kind of suck
Ukraine’s drones were primarily LTE/4G-connected for remote operation
kilimounjaro··on Studio Ghibli marks 40 years, but future looks uncertain
The ghibli image generation meme was clearly responsible for a significant portion of openai’s growth to being a $300 billion company. If altman didnt throw ghibli at least a few hundred million for that, ghibli should sue openai.
kilimounjaro··on Waymo's market share in San Francisco exceeds Lyft's
I always assumed waymo would immediately kill uber, but really the likelihood is that there will be multiple self driving companies as well as human drivers in markets. A big city may need 2000 waymos most of the time, but 5000 waymos on a saturday night or when a big game is on. Google can either build 2.5x as many as they need, or they can keep other operators in the market to make the service more functional during peak times. It is likely that other operators will bring cars to market, and a unified app with different self driving providers will bring better service than any individual provider.

Are you talking about acalabrutinib and zanubrutinib? If so, have you looked into the chinese version Orelabrutinib? Chinese pharma has gone from backwater to competitive with US in like 5 years
kilimounjaro··on Big banks explore venturing into crypto world together with joint stablecoin
Bitcoin gradually replacing the USD as the global reserve currency is quite an exciting development
kilimounjaro··on Big banks explore venturing into crypto world together with joint stablecoin
On a long enough time scale, this is bitcoin, with an additional NGU (number go up) characteristic which will persist until it achieves saturating global adoption

In practice, everyone just has binance app and pays each other stablecoins within that platform
kilimounjaro··on LegoGPT: Generating Physically Stable and Buildable Lego
Doesn’t seem to add much to just converting a 3d model into voxels and therefore bricks.

Using bricks other than 2x2 and 2x4 blocks creatively to make interesting things is really important, i’m not sure what type if algorithm would best auto generate beautiful MOCs however? Was thinking of doing a $50000 kaggle comp for this, what do others think?

kilimounjaro··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
Many thanks!!
kilimounjaro··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
Propofol is great isn’t it! I worked with some old guys who did some of the original studies demonstrating safety of propofol anaesthesia in MH. The world is much better for people with MH than it was 30 years ago, as long as they have a way to inform their doctors of the condition.
kilimounjaro··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
Paediatric anaesthesiologist here.

We mostly use propofol/remifent for maintenance of anaesthesia, and there is (some) reasonable evidence that this leads to less emergence delirium than sevoflurane. We use EEG-like monitors in all paralysed patients over a few months old.

Annoyingly I can’t access the full study, but would be interested to know why the kids in the low sevoflurane use group weren’t moving or coughing with surgical stimulation. The commonly used doses of sevoflurane are used because they are supposed to inhibit movement in response to noxious stimulus. So presumably these patients are all being paralysed or given a lot of opioid to stop them moving?

Using sevoflurane instead of propofol for maintenance if you are trying to reduce PAED is not really standard of care and makes me suspicious they are trying to overstate the effectiveness of their device.

kilimounjaro··on Why I stopped angel investing after 15 years, and what I'm doing instead
From chatgpt: “ In summary, Halle Tecco’s personal portfolio comprises about 34 direct investments, of which 24 have at least one female founder (as detailed above). This means roughly 70% of these companies were co-founded or founded by women. Notable female-founded companies in her portfolio include Everly Health (Julia Cheek), Cityblock Health (Dr. Toyin Ajayi), Kindbody (Gina Bartasi), Tia (Carolyn Witte/Felicity Yost), Hued (Kimberly Wilson), and many others listed in the first section. Halle Tecco’s investment focus has clearly encompassed a large number of startups with women on the founding team, aligning with her advocacy for female entrepreneurs in health tech ”

Call it charity or call it buying gal-pals with hubby’s money but primarily investing based on identity seems like a bad idea

I find it so weird that in this age of credentialism and unnecessary qualifications, most kindergarten teachers have no idea how to play the 3 chords on a ukelele which allow them to play basically every kids song and lead a singalong

kilimounjaro··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
The solution to ALL of this is a very simple randomised controlled trial. Identify 1000 pregnant women in a fluorinated area, give half of them free unfluorinated bottled water for their pregnancy and first 2 years of babies life, and let the other half drink tap water, then measure all of the kids’ iqs at 5 years.

Sadly noone has done this because the topic is too radioactive for most researchers or science funders to touch.

“ Actual reseachers don't really talk about links to IQ.”

Sorry but this reddit consensus is out of step with actual researchers. The #1 paediatric journal has published quite a bit on this recently. Basically the evidence isn’t of high quality but what we have doesn’t look great.
