kiksy··on The Amiga Consciousness
This is hard to describe, but easier to show. If you load up: http://www.chiptune.com/ the Workbench emulator, click and drag down the white bar at the top ("where it says Chipbench release) you'll see what is meant.

kiksy··on The new legend of Zelda is a toy box of delights
Mass Effect series was a weird one for me. Each game had its flaws, and each game fixed some of those flaws, but then introduced a ton of new ones.

There's an excellent breakdown for each on gamedesignreviews.com

kiksy··on Donald Trump Is Elected President
A good article posted on the other thread by another user:

The most concise and clearest explanation I've read, also written before the result.

kiksy··on Why Cory Doctorow Thinks Apple's Disappearing Headphone Jack Should Scare You
"Today it’s easy to record streamed music from the analog headphone jack on the phone, and even to convert the stream back to digital and transmit it in real time to someone else."

Is this really that common nowadays?

Personally I think the move is more of a way of selling Apple/Beats headphones than any DRM/Anti-piracy stuff.

kiksy··on Web Programming Is Getting Unnecessarily Complicated
I don't have much experience with the job market north of the border, but I'd say your situation would be atypical. I'm outside of London and have seen what you've described but the reality is that there is a shortage of people with the skills you've described in that theoretical role. I'd advise you line up 4-5 interviews and just go and see how they work out. With 7 years experience I'd expect you to be able to walk into a lot of positions without fuss which pay much much more than £19k.
kiksy··on Stephen Fry hits out at ‘infantile’ culture of trigger words and safe spaces
I'm pretty sure I've read all his autobiographies and can't remember any reference to 'warmed milk' or bread, and Google is showing a blank too. Which book was this in and in what context?
kiksy··on The State of LTE in September 2015
Depends on where the server you're running the test on is. Speedtest.net hunts out the fastest one, maybe Opensignal has less servers/slower servers?
kiksy··on Choosing a Web Framework/Language Combo for the Next Decade
Updated to include Symfony2:

kiksy··on The Absurdity of LinkedIn
I keep getting endorsed for jQuery. I keep being reminded of this: http://www.doxdesk.com/img/updates/20091116-so-large.gif
kiksy··on Ask HN: How do you push your code to your server?
Code local, merge working branch into dev/master on github, deploy to dev/prod using deployhq.

I make a deploy whenever I deem a feature to be complete, rather than just basing it on line count.

kiksy··on Btapp.js: BitTorrent in the browser
Exactly this, I thought "torrents in the browser in a js app? Sounds good!" , but itlooks like its a clunky web interface (that you need to install) for a headless torrent client (that you need to install).
kiksy··on Object-Relational Mapping is the Vietnam of Computer Science (2006)
I read Jeff's article and the comments here with interest. My only experience with an ORM is Doctrine2 (about 2.5 years) , and I've never really hit any issues. Whenever I've needed to duck out using the ORM in an edge case, its only been a few lines of code and very undisruptive.

In a recent project I manually mapped a large sprawling ancient schema manually using Doctrine2, and still never hit any major blockers. The code just abstracts away over the cracks.

Does anyone have any real world example articles on where an ORM has totally failed, and why?
