kiicia··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
it simply works, that's how you optimise tax on million+ sums, do you think ceo-s pay taxes on par with regular workers?
kiicia··on CAPTCHAs don't prove you're human – they prove you're American (2017)
it was meaning "to be careful and considerate when changing things", now it means "i do whatever i want and if you don't agree then you are (insert imaginary adversary here)"
kiicia··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
it can be very easily done by burning it with laser on prepared blank box on silkscreen - even iPhones are marked this way with their own serial numbers

the only reason why pis are not marked this way is because raspberry didn't wanted to (so far)

kiicia··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
gateway 3ds tried to brick 3ds-es of users of cloned cards, bricked whole swaths of actual users instead

kiicia··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
fun fact is that some chinese electronics manufacturers do exactly that with their products (even simple ones like led night lights), holographic qr-code on box that can be scanned and verified without opening box and second code inside box to verify box wasn't swapped
kiicia··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
information was easy to find since wikipedia and google (when both were unpoisoned), LLM-s were already good as "books you can talk with", now when LLM-s start cosplay experts they are not (and try make decisions they are not fit to take responsibility for) it gets literally insane, like looking at car wreck in slow motion
kiicia··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
it's of wrong scale, you cannot claim derivative work when you literally ingressed sum of knowledge while destroying it in the process so your "competitors" cannot do the same
kiicia··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
while you mentioned how tribal property management looks like in some places (that things are dynamically moving between who needs them at the time), it does not help to solve issue at hand, that is how to call what ai companies did:

- amassed then destroyed/denied largest knowledge corpora seen so far

- poisoned knowledge for decades to come, deliberately or not, which would stop new developments by independent teams

- now they are crying that they are being robbed of their precious models, which - at this point in time - are neither truly good not economical

(not to mention actual environmental and social harm they cause)

this is truly first of a kind situation, that was never seen nor heard before

kiicia··on CUDA for AMD on Windows
it will only get worse now when hughingface was bough by nvidia, not immediately, but in span of year or years...
kiicia··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
because that makes them even more money for equally nonexistent amount of liability, this is actual answer, unfortunately
kiicia··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
this argument still adds nothing to discussion because companies clearly want to spend zero but earn everything, the only amount they are willing to spend is on lawyers working on shielding companies from any responsibility including obvious cases of negligence
kiicia··on Mom found guilty of abuse for letting 5-year-old walk outside alone speaks out
so they went straight to unhinged side? readers should be able to decide for themselves based on unbiased reporting
kiicia··on Extinct Tasmanian tiger's 'snap' unlike any living mammal's bite
but you didn't even seen that article, it's about logging causing yet another species to go extinct, planted or not

you can always plant more forests but you cannot resurrect what went extinct, extinction is forever, new forest is 20 years

kiicia··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
no, absolutely not, any malicious or dishonest bot traffic is harmful, generating unnecessary transfer and literally stealing data
kiicia··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
you can still find books published within last 50 years, you don't have to read books published this year, unless your library went through destruction of "old" books which are now more relevant than ever...
kiicia··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
it's happening for years now, just in slightly different form, so far it was called disinformation, seo, astroturfing, hasb... ehem... last two years were devastating for charred remains of twitter with all those llm bots having free reign, twitter went from global news board to global gutter in record time thanks to disinformation and astroturfing campaigns
kiicia··on Private healthcare makes industries less innovative. It's time for change
it's connected via vicious cycle

private healthcare is getting more and more expensive due to private prices available to bulk insurers but not for private person

even if this is not completely deliberate, effect is that you are "serf of whomever pays your insurance" or go bankrupt the moment you have any kind of emergency

in europe some private healthcare providers are showing their colors from different perspective, they outright refuse or cancel private contracts when you are above certain age

kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
It’s not their IP, they never created data they were training on in the first place, at best they derived existing data without asking if they can commercialized it
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
balmer told us that gpl is cancer, but true cancer is us model of licensing
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
let's call it for what it really is, only companies "entitled to legally stolen data, don't steal from us now" are crying about distilation
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
which is moot point, if open model is hard to fully audit, then closed model is complete enigma and you should be more scared about closed models
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
but you are not using chinese models to learn about taiwan, you use chinese models to do everything BUT learning about taiwan, so no issue there
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
in simple terms closed models are rugpull waiting to spring at unsuspecting users, it's like you take all worst components of terminal capitalism (including price cartels), subscriptions relying on almost monopolistic dependency and microsoft/uber models of hugging competition to death to remain only provider and dictate all conditions
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
it's a real paradox, that chinese models are what guards democratization and private use of ai while us models are moted castles with "kings" crying that you are stealing their legally stolen goods... what times we are living in...
kiicia··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
altman should listen to his own words, and he should replace himself (wasting energy for eating) with ai (supposedly not wasting energy for eating)

it would be beneficial both for openai and world (most likely)

kiicia··on Ghost Font: A font that humans can read but AI cannot
this exact trick is used in some drm schemes (to protect either text or font file, or both), where codepoints are either mixed up or font is converted to vector curves and assigned random indexes
kiicia··on Ghost Font: A font that humans can read but AI cannot
It depends on how big/dense is your screen, high frequency message is actual text while low frequency message is decoy text. Probably so that it shows when frames are averaged together without checking actual motion vectors. It is similar effect like that image showing either young woman or old man depending on distance you are viewing it from (or other one with either Einstein or Marylin Monroe)

kiicia··on "Fix" MacBook Neo Cursor Lag: Record 1 Pixel of the Screen Every 10 Seconds
not necessarily ubiquitous, but you can encounter some issues with "lagging cursor" even today, if you use standard raspbian for example

> usbhid.mousepoll=0 > to /boot/cmdline.txt > This option was implemented to enforce a mouse polling rate of 62.5Hz which dramatically reduced the XWindow event system update rate in certain circumstances (oddball or "performance" mice can have update rates of 1000Hz, which is silly).

kiicia··on Deno Desktop
chromium is basically operating system at this point, it lacks kernel and ability to boot independently (added in chromium os), which is both good (from abilities standpoint) and bad (when copy of chromium is bundled with every app that renders webform with text field and button and nothing else)

when it goes about using webapps as desktop apps, native PWA support should be used, it would - in theory at least - lessen most issues electron apps have but will need extra effort and that's why we can't have nice things (like RAM free for other tasks)

kiicia··on German ruling declares Google liable for false answers in AI Overviews
why offer expensive service when it's effectively useless and only add to cost and amount of work? what else they offer, "summarize my text" and "generate custom emoji"? I can live without that...

for now only volvo accepts liability, and only for "slow crawl mode"
