kiaansaraiya··on Show HN: I linked genes, diseases, and environmental exposures by US County
GENARCH links the gap that happens when pieces are not in the same place. fGenes linked to a disease are in one database, with the local environmental exposure in another. Or perhaps molecular pathways are in a science repository, while the prevalence data is elsewhere. GENARCH bridges this exact gap by integrating free and public data including GWAS Catalog, CDC PLACES, EPA AirNow, and the USDA Food Atlas. GENARCH never provides individual risk data; it's solely built on association data. It's early and county coverage is still growing, so feedback and recommendations are highly appreciated.
kiaansaraiya··on Show HN: I built an atlas linking genes, exposure, and disease by US county
GENARCH was made because the pieces never sit in the same place. The genes linked to a disease are in one database, with the local environmental exposure in another. Or perhaps molecular pathways are in a science repository, while the prevalence data is elsewhere. GENARCH uses free and public data including GWAS Catalog, CDC PLACES, EPA AirNow, and the USDA Food Atlas. GENARCH never provides individual risk data; it's solely built on association data. kiaansaraiya··on The computer that helped win World War II
An interesting point is that Colossus wasn't solving the same problem as the bombe. People usually group them together due to Bletchley Park, but they attacked different ciphers. It explains why Colossus ended up looking much more like an electronic programmable computer than bombe.
kiaansaraiya··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
There is a difference between "AI is overvalued" and "AI isn't valuable". We've seen entire industries deliver real tech progress while still going through harsh valuation resets.
kiaansaraiya··on Design Is Compromise
I like this phrasing.
kiaansaraiya··on Everyone should know SIMD
I'd slightly rephrase the title to "everyone should know when SIMD didn't happen." Modern compliers are extremely good at vectorization until they suddenly aren't, an they'll often fall back to scalar code because if assumptions or a single-data dependent branch. Learning to check the compliers optimization reports is arguably more valuable.

exactly! it takes forever just to get a phrase down... much more with a whole song.
kiaansaraiya··on Heavy TV watching associated with smaller brain structures, study finds
The first question that comes to mind is reverse causation (probably because I'm a debater). Is increased TV viewing contributing to the brain differences, or are people with say preexisting reduced brain volume simply more likely to engage in activities like this? Essentially, there may be more to this than surface level.
kiaansaraiya··on The Zen of Parallel Programming
Something that never gets old is Rob Pike's framing: concurrency is about structuring a program, while parallelism is about the execution. Plenty of concurrent programs never run in parallel and there are plenty of parallel programs that are poorly structured.
kiaansaraiya··on A new Intel Itanium (IA-64) emulator that boots Windows
This is much harder problem than most CPU emulators as IA-64 isn't really just another ISA. EPIC most significantly allows the RE which seems like the main implementation challenge. Does the emulator model the RSE or are there shortcuts for Windows compatibility? Also, which Windows model is booting?

i've actually been looking for something like this for so long. all the online transcribers make me pay and i just wanna learn how play songs from a video. this is a great idea!
kiaansaraiya··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
I honestly think that this may have some benefit as the infinite scroll has made our attention spans incredibly short. Although, I'm sure people will find there way around it.
