khurs··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
>H100 is nearing five years and costs more to buy a used one now than a new one when it was released :)

Because everyone is buying as they want to run their own models and not pay for a cloud service?

khurs··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
sorry, my error. Bonds was $31.5 billion

Meta entering cloud at scale would see huge competition and lowering of profit margins.

>and yet they earned enough to shrug it off.

Zuck has 60% voting power, otherwise he would have been fired over metaverse and then model delays

Are you clicking on more ads now or less. Are you using google search more now or less.

I'm using it a lot less.

Don't think Google can point to past revenue an indicator of future revenue, they need to establish new streams of revenue.

Thanks for this informative post. Many have been puzzled as to why Google keeps claiming search isn't affected by chat apps, when clearly it is.

That $85 billion was bonds, and requires ongoing repayments of billions every year in interest payments

And then the $85bn to be repaid too.

How does this spend affect Google CEO's $692 Million potential pay? Is it meeting the required goals or taking him away from them?

khurs··on The startup's Postgres survival guide
I don't do this.

I find that most ID's in majority of tables are internal and only used for internal joins, so I use v7

The tables where the uuid will be sent to the client e.g. UserId etc, I also store an external_id of v4.

Much rather have a static column than continually convert.

Thank you

Can someone ELI5 this?

Is this a breakthrough of something or 'kinda interesting'?

khurs··on Terrence Tao's ChatGPT Conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture Counterexample
Yes.
khurs··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
This story has been headline news in many news sites today. So huge amount of free publicity for OpenAI.

If you use DuckDuckGo and use the video search, you can watch many YouTube vids embedded

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=rickastley&ia=videos&iax=videos

Fun fact: some countries have no YouTube ads, so if you use Tor/VPN to change to an ad free country, then can watch ad free without an adblocker.

khurs··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Same with many/all news paper website comments, there is a preferred narrative that is controlled.
khurs··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Reddit has licensing deals with OpenAI and Google, so is likely trying to keep other AI companies out

khurs··on ScreenWall – Turn old phones into synced widgets for your space
>I thought it was risky to leave a phone plugged in all the time

I have had phones on a charging dock for long periods. No issues.

Unless you have some budget small brand phone that was too cheap to be true, most phones are fine plugged in.

khurs··on Advertise in ChatGPT
I just clicked on an ad in ChatGPT mobile app.

As per the press release, it opens up a screen which takes up 90% showing the new site.

It's not a good browsing experience, as it's not a 100% full screen so smaller on an already small phone screen. Couldn't see a 'open in browser' option.

The google ad revenue and Meta ad revenue is hundreds of billions a year.

They have behavioural experts who know how mainstream minds work and how to manipulate.

Remembers ads are predominately not for the educated and intelligent, that type of person will think critically. People who are more naive are the golden gooses

If a user clicks on one ad, OpenAI makes a tiny bit of money. If a user clicks on 10 ads, OpenAI makes 10x the money.

This incentive is inevitably going to lead to ad supported LLM's not answering questions properly the first time so more ads served.

I am guessing in voice mode they will also have voice ads.

A testament to how tech has come along, first you needed complex equipment, then Adobe released a home animator thing which needed a webcam and was paid.

khurs··on UK appoints Secretary of Justice with no Law qualifications or legal experience
Not necessarily a bad thing, as there is a conflict of interest where the person is qualified. Because in a few years they will be unelected out and back working as a law practitioner.

So making changes which are unpopular with the Judiciary is easier for a person who isn't legally qualified. As long as their legal advisors are up to scratch.
