khazhou··on Jeff Bezos to keep 75 percent of couple’s Amazon stock after finalizing divorce
> Time to just enjoy his life. And that can be done with half the billions he has

Post-divorce he'll have $112 billion. So, yes.

khazhou··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
Which assumption is wrong? Employee #1 @ 1% equity is very common. You very quickly get into .5% and .1% after just a few employees.
khazhou··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
If the founders have $1B between the two, then employee #1 would have (guesstimating) on the order of $10M, assuming the standard employee#1 == 1%. Of course there's the initial investor share and option pool to account for, but we're still in the right ballpark.

Employee #20, who joined maybe a few months in, and then put in seven years, is gonna be at order of magnitude down, $1M. Employee #50, who put in six years, is the hundred thousands, and we keep going down.

Yeah, fantastic money, but pales compared to founders.

Lesson: don't not be a founder.

khazhou··on Pilot Who Hitched a Ride Saved Lion Air 737 on the Day Before Deadly Crash
Sure. I don't think they're implying otherwise. The lucky coincidence is that he happened to be aware of the issue and the fix.
khazhou··on Google's Page Allegedly Gave Rubin $150M Stock Award
I think his point is that the $150m (even $90m) is an outsized award for the team lead, compared to what the rest of the team received.
khazhou··on Silicon Valley’s Inequality Machine: A Conversation with Anand Giridharadas
I drove alongside Larry Page on 101. He was in a Nissan sedan, maybe $30K. This was two years after IPO.
khazhou··on Nestle, Disney Pull YouTube Ads, Joining Furor Over Child Videos
How effective is YT Kids mobile app at filtering out this junk?
khazhou··on Whitespace killed an enterprise app
Also remember: you MUST kill any Java-based enterprise app (Java is old and not modern) and replace the backend with Node.js. Then you can reuse all your server code in the frontend!

And remember to use Angular or React... actually, now you must use Vue. And create polyfills for your webpacks (and vice versa).

khazhou··on Interactive 3D ASCII scenes
Very cool. But feedback in case developer is here: the jumping physics could easily be much smoother and prettier, and the surface feels icy and hard to control.
khazhou··on What we've learned about hiring engineering managers
> They're a safe space for you to complain, and share what sucks about your job

Not trying to be a jerk here, but they're not meant to be a place just for employee to vent. They want the manager to do something about the problems. This is usually frustrating for both people, as the manager is often not empowered to fix the problem (such senior execs not having their shit together, other teams fighting, and all that usual fun stuff) and the employee gets tired of essentially asking every week for things to change, with no improvement.

khazhou··on How I negotiated a software-engineering job offer in Silicon Valley
TLDR please?
khazhou··on How I negotiated a software-engineering job offer in Silicon Valley
Interview elsewhere and find out. Seriously, it's the only way to know.
khazhou··on Una Corda, a piano with one string per note
> Why would any serious musician spend 22k Euros on this piano... inferior instrument in volume, tone, tone control, sustain, and pretty much all the features

It's a different sound. For a certain type of music, it's superior to regular pianos.

There are how many kinds of electric guitars, acoustic guitars, woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion instruments, electronic gear...? Very very many. Even in piano-land, different makers have characteristic tones. A musician hears a sound in their head, and wants to replicate and shape it exactly.

khazhou··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
I hate it when people call it cheesing.

It's not my fault if you don't scout. Planetary Fortress rushes, proxy barracks, cannon rush... it's all fair game.

khazhou··on Startups Rejecting Venture Capital
Pet peeve: they are not working 80 hours a week. Simple number crunching. That would be working 8am-10pm every single Mon-Fri, then five solid hours on Saturday, and another five hours on Sunday. Every week. No, that's not happening.
khazhou··on The Hand Licking Incident
I'm not arguing against empathy. I guess I'm just saying it's necessary but very far from sufficient in many cases. In the article, it was basically sufficient.
khazhou··on The Hand Licking Incident
True, but I'm not saying it's a going thing to roll shit down... I'm saying that it would behoove people to realize that when their manager is angry, it's probably because their manager is angry at them. One can do with that insight what they will. Personally, it helps me cope with stressful situations, to realize I'm not the odd man out, and that everyone struggles to get it right.
khazhou··on The Hand Licking Incident
Eh, this article was a bit "Reader's Digest". Parent tries to solve problem, gives up and lets fate have its way, problem goes away when parent wasn't looking, parent-child have a moment of trust which reveals that the problem was something simple all along. Life lesson learned.

How about when it's not a simple underlying problem ("hands get dry in cold climate")? A speech impediment which is cute in a small kid but weird in middle school and socially+career-limiting in an adult. Or an aggression issue. Or one of the many spectrum issues, which won't go away by moving to a warmer climate.

I agree with the article on not getting angry, but I'm not going to get a new life lesson from "if your kid trusts you they will open up."

khazhou··on The Hand Licking Incident
Your critique isn't much better, my friend. You are exaggerating his argument terribly ("bleeding people" like old times?) rather than looking at his actual point. He is saying that spanking was, and he claims is, still common. I don't personally have data, but I was certainly spanked, and I never thought it unusual. I hated it and vowed not to spank my own, which I never have. But I have no data on the rest of the world... and don't much feel like researching it anyway.
khazhou··on The Hand Licking Incident
What's helped me cope with pressure from bosses was the realization that when they're shitting on someone, it's usually because their own boss is shitting on them (and on upwards). Then it's less personal, less an issue of someone in authority judging your performance, and becomes more of a team effort/problem: I will try to fix the issues, so that my boss's issue goes away, so his boss's issue goes away, and then we'll all be happy.
khazhou··on Visualizing the History of Fugazi
How strange to see a night I remember well as a teen in 1988, and I left the show half-way because me and Jason were talking about something, and we went back in and the smoke didn't bother us and the pit was great and it was aggressive but welcoming, and I can't even remember what girl I liked. But there it is... that night, a single dated entry on a web page.
khazhou··on Glitter bomb tricks parcel thieves
Telling someone to "not dress provocatively" harms their identity and right to self-expression. It devalues them as a independent human being, reducing them to perpetual victimhood. The crime against which it "protects" is heinous and life-altering and, sadly, our culture still has a somewhat permissive attitude towards it in some situations (e.g., on college campuses).

If anyone's right to identity and self-expression is exemplified by keeping wallet and keys in their car, then, yes, I suppose they should certainly assert their rights by keeping valuables in their car!

khazhou··on Glitter bomb tricks parcel thieves
Hopefully you don't keep your wallet and keys in your car anymore! If thieves broke into my car, they'd get some old CDs, leather gloves, and a skateboard I have no emotional attachment to.

Seriously people: your car is not secure storage.

khazhou··on Lyft Files for IPO
They filed a draft/confidential S-1, so don't bother yet searching for the document.
khazhou··on Healthcare.gov confirms hackers stole income, immigration and tax data
This distinction is not useful to the people whose information was accessed. Perhaps healthcare.gov could have been designed in such a way that sensitive user information was not available to client systems, or somehow required that clients have higher levels of security to prevent this from happening.
khazhou··on Night Sight for Pixel phones
What a fantastic reply. Much love, Marc.
khazhou··on Google paid Andy Rubin $90M while keeping silent about a misconduct claim
So you just demonstrated that indeed, the 500 employees under Andy, all combined might have received the same compensation as him alone.

Compensation in tech is ridiculously unfair.

khazhou··on Night Sight for Pixel phones
Let's give credit to the entire engineering team.
khazhou··on Acquiring absolute pitch in adulthood is difficult but possible
I had a nasty sinus infection a few years ago that took weeks to clear up. My ears were stuffed up and it made hearing difficult for a while. After it cleared up, my left ear was tuned about a quarter-tone sharp, and only above a certain frequency (about middle C). It was the damndest thing.
