kharms··on The largest living thing on Earth is a fungus (2014)
Smile molds are now considered Protozoa, partially due to behavioral differences in how they eat, but mostly due to genetic testing.
kharms··on Patreon adding a 2.9% and $.35 fee to every patron transaction
>basically that fee, is directly inline with credit card process fees, its even structured the same.

(1) At Patreon's scale you pay <2% per transaction, so there is at least 1% extra overhead.

(2) That fee is present even with debit card transactions.

I agree with you regarding finding another means to support creators.

kharms··on Patreon adding a 2.9% and $.35 fee to every patron transaction
>Title is incorrect, the $0.35 is for every pledge, not for every (monthly) transaction.

They are switching away from the monthly batch billing to a transaction-per-pledge model, so I'm not sure why you don't like the title.

kharms··on A Peek at David Rockefeller’s Rolodex
My favorite part:

[2001] Bill Gates note: see data base for add'l entries
[2007] Gerald Ford note: See Rolodex Card
Maybe they tried using a CRM but Rockefeller wasn't it to it.
kharms··on Volkswagen Official Gets 7-Year Term in Diesel-Emissions Cheating
According to this[0] MIT study, the excess emissions will cause 60 premature deaths. If you commit 60 violent offenses you can expect well over 7 years in jail.

Edit: 60 in the US, many more globally.

kharms··on An $814M Mystery Near the Heart of the Biggest Bitcoin Exchange
>If traders lose faith in Tether, they would sell Tether and buy Bitcoin in a flight to safety. Bitcoin prices would rise as traders try to get out of Tether.

The Tether:Bitcoin rate would rise, but I’m not sure that the Bitcoin:USD price would follow suit.

kharms··on Books I read this year
Since we’re giving credit where it’s due, let’s not mix the USSR and Russia. Ukraine and Belarus suffered proportionately greater losses.
kharms··on Stanford CS007: Personal Finance For Engineers
I agree with the gist of your post but your consensus advice is a bit off:

>And graduated Stanford. You've even managed to save around $10K in cash from various summer jobs and gifts from relatives. The consensus advice investment management professionals would offer is to sock it away in a well-diversified set of Vanguard Funds.

Your first $10k is your emergency fund. From what I've read, the consensus is: don't invest it, instead keep it in an FDIC insured savings account + cash. If you need it, it'll probably be because you've been unemployed for a while. You are most likely to be unemployed during an economic downturn. The cash choice insulates against natural disasters.

If you do invest it, try a target date fund that's matures in the near future. For today, 2020 would be a good choice.

kharms··on Bitcoin Blows Past $9,000
Iraq was invaded shortly after Saddam attempted to switch from USD to Euro for their oil exports. I’ve heard various theories for the ultimate reason for the war and of them this one seems pretty convincing.
kharms··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
Looking past the financing question, all (major) telecommunications networks are built via eminent domain, and as such must necessarily serve the public good.
kharms··on Apple delaying HomePod smart speaker launch until next year
As a counterpoint, I intend to purchase one. The only smart features I want are the easy ones - "play X, pause, dim lights, remind me of Y." Alexa & Co. are better at the expense of privacy.

The combination of respecting privacy and hifi sound (assuming they deliver) is killer.

kharms··on The Paradise Papers: How Ridiculously Easy It Is for the Rich to Avoid Taxes
I've never seen a political post last more than a few hours on this site before some mod kills it. If it mentions Russia it happens even more quickly. Just ignore this post, it'll be gone soon enough.
kharms··on Silicon Valley thinks it invented roommates. They call it 'co-living'
A datapoint: there was a startup in Boston named Bridj that folded because it turned out to not be a viable model.
kharms··on Student Debt Lawsuits Are a Lucrative Business
>Student loans are originated without regard to credit risk, at the same interest rate for all borrowers.

That's not entirely true.

For undergraduate students, no more than $57,500 can be loaned from the government at a fixed 4.45% APR. This is what you're talking about.

If you need more than $57k (which you would even at most state schools) you need to get a private loan. Private loans have variable APR based on your and your cosigners credit history. Sallie Mae offers loans with an APR between 5.74 and 11.85.

kharms··on I bought a Switch from Nintendo and they threatened me with legal action
I cancelled my prime account after a string of issues, the worst of which I’ll summarize.

I bought a $1300 camera, received a $500 camera. Easy error, easy fix. I wish.

I had to call twice to initiate the return, call twice more to find out why a moth later I had neither a camera nor my money. Turns out the return was silently rejected. Why? “Wrong item returned.” No kidding! Had to call a fifth time to finally get this resolved, but at the end of that call I realized I was paying amazing $100 annually to fix issues that they caused.

kharms··on Paradise Papers: New leak from offshore finance firm
This argument falls apart when you extend it a little bit further.

Suppose that same public defender got his client off, and in their last conversation his client tells him "thanks! I'm going to go rob a bank." Now that public defender would be both legally and ethically obligated to report said crime.

Why? Because the default state is this - if you know of a crime, you are obligated to report it. The public defender example is the exception we carved out because we as a society believe it's required for a fair trial. Not so for money laundering.

kharms··on A “Silicon Valley” actor is terrified by what’s happening in Silicon Valley
Here is one example, where they refused to publish leaks from/about Russia:

I recall another case when Wikileaks itself advertised a Russia leak and then never released anything.

kharms··on A “Silicon Valley” actor is terrified by what’s happening in Silicon Valley
Wikileaks leaks are selective. "Public" only describes the things they release. The hostility is in the choice of releases.
kharms··on Bitcoin Surges Past $7,000 to Extend Record Rally

kharms··on Monsanto Attacks Scientists After Studies Show Trouble for Its New Weedkiller
I saw this in action yesterday. Someone posted a brief anti-monsanto comment on reddit and 2 minutes (literally) later there was a three paragraph reply, with maybe 10 sources linked.
