khaki54··on Launch HN: Vespper (YC F24) – SOTA Docx MCP
Agree a good one this is needed but there are 4-5 semi functional Word MCP servers including one from the vendor. This one still isn't feature complete. This is going to sound rude, and I don't mean it that way, but how did you get accepted to YC for this? Was this some kind of pivot off your accepted idea and business plan?
khaki54··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
My skill went up quite a bit when I started watching Louis Rossmann's explainer videos. He mainly does component level repair of macbooks and he covers his troubleshooting approach and the equipment he uses is nothing you can't replicate at home. I don't bother pulling out microscope for repairs and just stick with magnifying glass.
khaki54··on Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90%
The downside of reading posts about the practical application of AI is that the practioner often uses AI to write it. I don't know why AI prose is so hard to read in the browser. I don't have any problem when reading off my TUI
khaki54··on How I over-engineered my book
Textbook example of structured procrastination. I bet you got all your household projects done as well as taxes for next year
khaki54··on My two year old taught me constraint solving
Once I got the battery powered Brio train, it became more fun for me than the kids
khaki54··on My two year old taught me constraint solving
If the comment from the 2yo correcting him about oblong vs. oval wasn't enough to trip your satire detector, 'graph with two cycles' should have blown it up. And now I realize that your comment 100% had to be sarcasm and I'm a fool for responding. At least I didn't downvote
khaki54··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Yeah I had something like this for several years. Works really well for cars
khaki54··on Show HN: I built a real-time OSINT dashboard pulling 15 live global feeds
you can't downvote replies so it wasn't him
khaki54··on Todd C. Miller – Sudo maintainer for over 30 years
I think xkcd should fund it, that would be comical.
khaki54··on Pushing the smallest possible change to production
Similar to working with an open source tool. Fix all the errors you find in the documentation when you are getting it up and running. If the pull request gets handled well and quickly, future contributions will probably be painless and productive.
khaki54··on Linux boxes via SSH: suspended when disconected
How did you find $4 on Hetzner? I didn't see anything close!
khaki54··on Open sourcing Dicer: Databricks's auto-sharder
Seems weird to call it sharding since it's not sharding indexed datasets or anything like that. Is this just a tool to mitigate Databricks’ internal service-scaling challenges?
khaki54··on A closer look at a BGP anomaly in Venezuela
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
khaki54··on The most banned books in U.S. schools
It may seem like an attack on queer books, but as far as I can tell none of the straight books seem to be trying to explain how minors should get access to adult dating apps to meet older men, or showing obscene graphical depictions of sodomy involving children.

I think if librarians were buying "straight" books with the same explicit and adult content and putting them in elementary, middle, and high schools, the same parents would be complaining about those too.

khaki54··on The most banned books in U.S. schools
What? Mein Kampf and Anarchists Cookbook didn't even make the list at all? Something's fishy here
khaki54··on Average DRAM price in USD over last 18 months
The actual headline here is sort of misleading -- the 4x price increase is over the past 3 months!
khaki54··on A vector graphics workstation from the 70s
Did he really need that crazy probe or was that a joke? Normal probes that come with Fluke 179 couldn't do it? I guess mine says 1000V so not rated for it. Do they even make 4000V handheld meters? How are you supposed to do the calibration?
khaki54··on WordPress plugin quirk resulted in UK Gov OBR Budget leak [pdf]
If you've ever looked at the admin panel of even a minor league, single page Wordpress site you'd probably recognize it as a major risk for any organization instantly. So many of the plugins look like spaghetti, with most you're trusting some random name to not be malicious. Unsurprisingly there are 60,000 CVE related to WP. I get that we all use a dozen node packages that we can't reasonably verify, but WP seems so much more wild west than that. I guess i's fine if you are a low value target, but a commercial CMS is not terribly expensive, and should be mandatory for any government org.
khaki54··on China reaches energy milestone by "breeding" uranium from thorium
Interesting claim that the reactor doesn't need water and can be built away from the coast. I thought all reactors used steam to turn a turbine to produce electricity. Something special here?
khaki54··on MySafeSpace – Whitehouse.gov
Can't even blame gen z staffer for this. What's the youngest you could reasonably be to get this one? 35? Also not having Tom in top 8 is a big miss
khaki54··on Willow quantum chip demonstrates verifiable quantum advantage on hardware
Because to steal bitcoin by reverse engineering a private key from a public one you need to be able to factor a very large number. Currently the highest number they have factored using only quantum computing is 21.
khaki54··on Show HN: Semantic search over the National Gallery of Art
Tried "Images of german shepherds" and not one on the page of 16
khaki54··on Show HN: Semantic search over the National Gallery of Art
Yale has an amazing one, worth looking at: https://lux.collections.yale.edu/
khaki54··on Global Village Construction Set
This is exactly the type of information you want loaded on a HDD tucked away in case of calamity. You won't be able to find all the parts but the ideas would be invaluable.
khaki54··on 3M May Escape Toxic Chemical, PFAS Manufacturing Legacy
without Limited Liability Companies, a civil matter as simple as a copyright lawsuit could permenently bankrupt a small business and take the owners house and all their assets.

I don't agree with companies wantonly externalizing their costs onto the environment or the populace such as Dow or 3M poisoning the entire planet. Criminal liability never goes away for serious crimes, whether sole-proprietership, LLC, or Corp. We need to actually start jailing people though

khaki54··on How to make the Framework Desktop run even quieter
Well the fan in the Framework desktop is some kind of purpose built high performance Noctua fan that is significantly louder than usual. So they are suggesting to use the new grill with the fan that comes with it so you don't encounter throttling.
khaki54··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
Just run second VPN inside the honeypotted VPN
khaki54··on Ask HN: Are AI filters becoming stricter than society itself?
No. Political correctness in practice is a way to exercise control by shaming people for adhering to long established norms of behavior and vocabulary.
khaki54··on When root meets immutable: OpenBSD chflags vs. log tampering
Yep use syslog server or similar in conjuction with this, which basically gives you something like immutability since the data is on a remote server with hopefully different security controls. You really don't want to be trying to sort an attack out after the fact on attacker-controlled machine. They could of course turn off network links or syslog eventually, but you'd at least have the early stages of the attack and or perhaps be able to detect it before they actually get full access.
khaki54··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
Simply Piano and Yousician are pretty close to Rocksmith. A little more focused on teaching though. You can plug in midi or USB to your keyboard or it can use a mic to do note tracking
