kghose··on GCC 4.9 is doing “some seriously crazy shit” according to Linus Torvalds
Hi nabla9,

I read the bug report thread and that was as professional as I would expect from grownups. I was responding to your statement about anglo-american culture.

I have observed this "it's OK to be direct" motto from some parts of modern Europe and, interestingly for me, Israel.

Everything we interpret depends on our training, but my observation is that this motto is very commonly interpreted to allow rude, condescending and arrogant behavior. I spent a lot of time in India. In this respect correct behavior (as taught to us by our parents) aligns with the Anglo-American view of politeness in many respects.

I have come to believe that the directness championed by some current European cultures may perhaps be a modern phenomenon, not so common before the 1940s in those countries?

I agree that too much politeness can be perverted into passive aggressive behavior but so can (and I think is) this "Let's be direct" attitude.

There has been much talk on HN and everywhere else of how to develop a code of conduct that allows honest exchange but maintain civility. I think politeness and respect is a central part of this code.

People are not computers. You can not kick them when their output does not please you. You can not kick them when you think you are better than them.

Well, perhaps you can. Perhaps being rude and arrogant leads to a better world.

I would like, however to live in a world where everyone tries to respect each other and show that respect.

Best

nabla9 -> I have a technical question about HM comments. I see two interesting things about your reply

1. I can not see a down-vote button (To clarify I personally never down-vote anything, just upvote things) 2. I don't see a reply link to your comment.

This does not seem to be a nesting limit (I can see a reply link for other comments elsewhere here)

What is this - is there some option one picks when responding to a comment?

Thanks -Kaushik

I think that the overly critical culture of many European nations prevents younger people from trying out or voicing ideas because humans are human and don't like being humiliated , especially in public. This is something I think we should not emulate.
kghose··on Grandpa's Photos
I disagree. I thought the website was very nice, easy to navigate and I found the full page photos very nostalgic looking (grainy, oversaturated ...). It evokes exactly the kind of atmosphere I would associate with a Grandpa from the 60s.
kghose··on Show HN: Hack Your Mortgage
Interesting. One suggestion - the page should scroll as you progress along to keep the current waypoint in view
kghose··on Prosecutors Are Reading Emails From Inmates to Lawyers
I talked to a relative who is a lawyer and was told that court cases are not dramatic as seen on TV. Both the prosecutor and defense side have access to all documents and have ample time to prepare their arguments. There are no surprises in court (if there is either side can ask for more time to prepare based on new info).

So knowing strategies doesn't really help, because you kind of already know the strategy and have prepared your response.

Now - if you are guilty, and you tell your lawyer where you buried the bodies and the police happen to let a cadavar dog lose in that general location ...

However, I agree with the first poster - there should be an official secure channel for communicating with counsel after you are convicted.

If you are into such things, do take a look at the orbiter project (http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/) and the NASSP add-on (http://nassp.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page). I spent many an after-school night flying to the moon by punching codes on a keyboard. It was amazing.

kghose··on Levittown: The Imperfect Rise of the American Suburbs
I disagree - long maternity leave would encourage women to stay in the work force, and I strongly support this. I think, from seeing things first hand, we need 1 year maternity leaves to do things properly. Making women choose between raising/having children and going to work is no choice at all.
kghose··on A “nationwide gentrification effect” is segregating us by education
Yes, this!
kghose··on Levittown: The Imperfect Rise of the American Suburbs
This was a very insightful article, which deserves more upvotes than it has. It was very informative for me from the point of view of contemporary American history, especially as we hear of the rising "trend" (aren't they all trends) of younger folk giving up on suburbia and moving back to the cities.

If nothing else, it introduced me to the song "Little Boxes".

kghose··on American Summer: Before Air-Conditioning (1998)
This is a very interesting thread for me. My spouse is from Germany, and it was nice to hear that the tussles we have with opening windows in the middle of a New England winter are part of a much broader "war" ;-)

Also, in New England very few homes have central air - new construction and renovations do have central, but it seems a waste, given you only really need it in July and then usually the nights (when we are in the house) are cool.

But yes, this month and a few days in June I think, every day, so, how much would it cost to put in a ductless in the bedrooms? The living room has a GIANT ancient wall mounted air-conditioner from the days of the cold war and moon landings which sounds like a rocket and seems to flood the first floor with cold air the moment you switch it on. I have not seen the electric bill yet.

kghose··on A new kind of telescope that can photograph the whole sky simultaneously
It is, however, not clear to me what kind of useful information we can get from the visible spectrum at this low magnification. At 85mm you can't even make out features on the moon.
kghose··on Study: Half of black males, 40% of white males arrested by age 23
I would say you're is the most insightful comment in this thread. I am biased towards thinking you are correct in that when one publishes a paper, there are incentives towards a more dramatic interpretation/presentation of the data. So, a study that said 10% of all males have been arrested, would not have gotten as much notice as the current presentation.

So, a double income family, each person earning $250,000 with proceeds from a previous house sale for downpayment, can manage quite easily, no?

Pre tax income: 41666/month

20% Down = $300000 Borrow 1.2M @ 4.0% = $5728.98/mo

This looks quite doable.

Heck, with half that income, you could do it!

kghose··on Living in a Fool’s Paradise
I don't have the link, but I read somewhere that foreign investors (I think this was data upto last year - things may have changed fast) don't make up THAT much of the market, and only for the 1M+ homes, which is way above median price in the US.

Let's face it, this is simply an attempt to make it harder for Google to operate in the EU. It's probably mainly normal bureaucratic nonsense, encouraged along by some nationalism and probably a bit from european corporations hoping to gain some market share away.
kghose··on From Google to Amazon: EU goes to war against power of US digital giants
See how easily the politicos make it about you against me, when we should be working together. Dude, if you are European, and you make good software, I'll use it.

In fact, I use a ton of software made by people who, by chance, were born in Europe. But the moment you start to rail against 'US companies' (I work in a US company) I begin to think, waitaminuite, that guy is against me - he wants to hurt me, maybe I shouldn't use his stuff either ...

To this I would add: do work that pleases you, not work that leads to something you think will please you.

I was first introduced to this from one of the Indic texts - perhaps one of the Vedas - where people are told to do work and not worry about it's reward.

This is a good way to protect yourself from the folly that the parent poster describes.

It's broader than that. It means that employers can start to effectively challenge anything (any benefit) they can somehow shoehorn into matching their religion.
