kgdiem··on USPS text scammers duped his wife, so he hacked their operation
I was pissy one day after my mailbox was so full the mail carrier say it in front of the mailbox and I came up with a solution I haven’t tried — return to sender!

This would decrease their profit per-item by 1/2.

Key piece tho, are you able to return pre-sorted mail to sender?

kgdiem··on OTranscribe: A free and open tool for transcribing audio interviews
I started making an open source macOS app to do this with whisper and potentially pyannote.

It is functional but a bit slow. I think using whisper directly instead of swift bindings will help a lot.

Really interested in adding diarisation but having a lot of trouble converting Pyannote to CoreML. Pyannote runs so slowly with torch on CPU. Haven’t gotten around putting my latest work for that on GitHub yet.

Happy to accept contributions —

Some priorities right now:

* Fixing signing for local builds

* Replace swift whisper with whisper cpp

* Allowing users to provide their own models

kgdiem··on Ask HN: How to build site with payment, subscriptions, user login, registration
Yes, laravel has everything you need and is very simplistic.
kgdiem··on AI agents but they're working in big tech
I am fairly certain that agents are the same thing as prompts (but also could be different).

Only the chat prompt/agent/whatever is connected to RAG; the image generator is DALLE and the router is a one-off call each time.

eg, it could be the same model with a different prompt or a different model + different prompt all together. AFAIU it’s just serving a different purpose than the other calls

kgdiem··on AI agents but they're working in big tech
I remembered reading that they used > 1, found this screengrab of discord on Reddit:

kgdiem··on AI agents but they're working in big tech
Midjourney uses multiple agents for determining if a prompt is appropriate or not.

I kinda did this, too.

I made a 3 agent system — one is a router that parses the request and determines where to send it (to the other 2) one is a chat agent and the third is an image generator.

If the router determines an image is requested, the chat agent is tasked with making a caption to go along with the image.

It works well enough.

kgdiem··on How to save $13.27 on your SaaS bill
Any reason not to use S3 static hosting and cloudflare? I host at least 4 sites for between $0.03-0.1/month this way.
kgdiem··on Atlassian research highlights major disconnect between developers and leaders
> it's all a shitshow of dissonance between the technical and managerial sides. Workflows that are designed by a committee of the people who are not going to do the work but will manage it, implemented by consultants that sell themselves as specialists in "integration", usually because the company is too cheap to have its own internal set of good developers to drive such projects.

Preach!!

> Being opinionated as a product actually matters in the end, but there's no incentive to not try to reach every single possible customer in a market.

Yes undoubtedly so. I’ve seen a lot of companies using Monday.com for non-tech projects and the endless flexibility / generality of the tool leads them to just waste a ton of money and time, in the end they are none the wiser that the issue is them all along.

kgdiem··on Atlassian research highlights major disconnect between developers and leaders
But isn’t this all a people problem? The incompetent manager, the overly strict rules implemented by IT, the BS metrics by the manager.

If me, you and an academic/finance guy/content creator/etc wanted to start working on a project tomorrow, would it matter that much to you if we used jira or a google sheet to communicate the scope and current status of the project?

Edit, addendum, I’ve been thinking about the larger picture, the personal and organizational issues in software, for some time now. I’ve come to realize that a serious lack of talent, interest or enthusiasm really gets in the way of enterprise software.

I have started to think the solution is to focus on tradecraft; most organizations lack the ability to create decent software for a reasonable cost much in the same way that every company hires outside developers and tradesmen to build a new factory or building.

kgdiem··on Atlassian research highlights major disconnect between developers and leaders
I think jira isn’t really the issue — it’s actually easier to use (IME) to express a body of work than notion, asana or trello.

Like most things, I think it’s a people problem. Story points, velocity, burn down, etc are mostly nonsense.

Tracking productivity can be largely subjective and unfair, probably better left to judgement of a decent manager.

At the end of the day I think it’s systemic incompetence and lack of clear communication, from any combo of product engineering and business, that causes frustration more than creating epics, stories, subtasks and bugs.

kgdiem··on Ask HN: How can I find something worthwhile to do?
Try thinking about some minor annoyance in your life and if you can solve that with a simple app, or something you really enjoyed that could be made into an app.

Some things I’ve done —

StreamSwitcher for turning Apple Music links to Spotify links —https://apps.apple.com/us/app/streamswitcher/id6450388510

Cancel your gym membership online — https://byebyefitness.com

Step by step translations of the Dao De Jing with beautiful artwork — https://apps.apple.com/us/app/daily-dao/id6465685578

kgdiem··on Tao Te Ching translated by Ursula Le Guin (1997)
I made an interactive app with Jeff Pepper’s translation; I really enjoyed how he did step by step translations with literal English, this was the inspiration for the app.

kgdiem··on PHP Doesn't Suck Anymore
Oh! And last time I checked, maybe 2015, a lot of the stdlib of uncompiled Zend PHP is just plain old C code.
kgdiem··on PHP Doesn't Suck Anymore
I like it. I returned to PHP after nearly a decade and with Laravel I’m able to ship products really quickly.

Laravel’s collections fix my syntactic issues with PHP arrays.

My only complaint is that type checking is performed at runtime, so if you forget to mark a field as optional you get a type error even if you account for the nullref in your code.

kgdiem··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
I read TFA after commenting. I think that is even more interesting; it’ll be very helpful for better understanding the safety profile of marijuana.

Still curious to see how this may affect cannabis commerce. Will CVS have cannabis extracts behind the pharmacy counter?

kgdiem··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
Yes really good point. Won’t it still be up to the states to decide what the regulatory environment will look like — eg they can choose to preserve these jobs through existing regulatory frameworks in the same way that certain goods cannot be shipped to certain states
kgdiem··on iPadOS Identified as Digital 'Gatekeeper' Under New EU Tech Rules
I use Safari on desktop and mobile particularly because private browsing doesn’t share sessions between tabs/windows whereas chrome does.

Somewhat niche yes but I loathe chrome for that behavior.

Is there a way to turn that off?

> Most developers put the majority of their effort to optimising their apps for the web and the best extensions are made for Chrome on desktop

Also, I’m guilty of this as a safari user, lol. My extension is available on Chrome + ForeFox but it’s too much of a pain to make a free extension for safari.

kgdiem··on 44% Unicorn Startups in the US were founded by foreign workers
Anecdotal evidence of course but I’ve had coworkers who get masters degrees because that somehow helps their chances of getting permanent status or something similar.

Is it possible that it’s more and more competitive as there are more people who are trying to immigrate?

kgdiem··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
I guess I am looking at the issue on the level below media, primarily as a trade issue.

It’s not that TikTok can’t exist; they’ve been trying to force a sale AFAIK. Whether it’s a NatSec issue or a censorship issue seems to be in the eye of the beholder.

kgdiem··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
Yes I totally understand this point but the Trump administration was trying to get Bytedance to sell TikTok to Oracle before the war IIRC.

Really showing their hand with the NatSec claims in my opinion.

kgdiem··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
This is really difficult for me. I have an app that is available in every country except for China because it isn’t allowed to be published there.

In that vein it seems fair and probably doesn’t go far enough — Chinese citizens are free to publish whatever they want in the US while we’re severely restricted on conducting trade in China.

On the other hand, I’d love access to that market and would prefer trade negotiations rather than tit for tat disputes like this that won’t further the interests of American businesses (outside of Meta and Snapchat)

kgdiem··on Student debt is haunting Americans from graduation to retirement
> The institutions should be held liable for this debt, not the tax payer, and our government should not guarantee or subsidize these loans.

This seems fair to me. Many universities have tremendous endowments and should be in a position to offer financing to their students. The extent of government subsidy could be no tax on the interest gained from the loans they write.

It seems like the paradise papers at large and especially the connection to higher ed have been largely forgotten and maybe never fully acknowledged in the mainstream.

kgdiem··on Software Company HashiCorp Is Weighing a Potential Sale
I’m down 40%. Is it typical to purchase that far above the current price?
kgdiem··on Software Company HashiCorp Is Weighing a Potential Sale
> And unfortunately that how things really work.

Yes, definitely. The cost to build out and maintain any middle ground solution must be unprofitable for the majority of business models.

Ultimately this creates opportunities for down-market service providers. Mid-large companies outsource support to contractors who will provide support for terraform in addition to 20 other things.

kgdiem··on Scammed by the top result for 'Bitcoin wallet' in Apple App Store
Any idea where they’re based? Are they global? They do my reviews at weird times.
kgdiem··on Ask HN: Is bring your own cloud considered self-hosting?
Yep yep I’m working on #3 as well, that’s what the customers asked for.
kgdiem··on Ask HN: Is bring your own cloud considered self-hosting?
If a customer has such stringent requirements, can’t you offer 2 & 3 then use the contract approval / signing period to get ready? Potentially even having the customer fund #2?

If you already have terraform it should be low-ish effort to do #3 as it is.

kgdiem··on Apple rolls out iMessage upgrade to withstand decryption by quantum computers
> Washington and Beijing have traded allegations of intercepting massive amounts of encrypted data in preparation for Q-Day, an approach sometimes dubbed “catch now, crack later.

Any good sci-fi books written about this? The emoji analysis South Park comes to mind.

kgdiem··on The Layoff
My previous job never told us who was laid off —- once I had a meeting with a woman later that day and I only realized after she didn’t show up.

I too found slack to be the layoff lookup tool.

kgdiem··on Ask HN: Has anyone here ever tried throwing everything away?
How do you wind up meeting new people to socialize with? Especially in the small town you just moved to.
