keybits··on How I Built My Blog
> Over the years, my blog has become a surprisingly complex application. It’s over 100,000 lines of code, not counting the content.

When I read this my reaction was "that's ridiculous!" But the author is a skilled and experienced web developer. The rich educational interactivity on their site shows that achieving that level of presentational finesse doesn't come easily.

keybits··on I have 2000 old VHS tapes in my garage and don't know what to do with them
Includes a fascinating story of how teletext images can be recovered from VHS recordings using a TV capture card.
keybits··on Rye and Uv: August Is Harvest Season for Python Packaging
Uv's latest release was discussed yesterday: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41302475

The linked post is the author of Rye's take on that.

keybits··on Leaving Neovim for Zed
I'm in the same situation. The upgrade price for Sublime Text and Sublime Merge is $152 whereas the full license is $168. As you say, it feels more like a subscription model. I'd renew if the discount was bigger. I can of course continue to use the versions released while my license was valid, but it would be nice to get bug fixes and new feature while still supporting the developers.
keybits··on What I Learned Writing an Album in Just Intonation
To save people a few clicks, there's a wonderful visualisation of the generated music at https://ambient.garden/
keybits··on Foobar2000
I can recommend Swinsian on macOS: https://swinsian.com/

It's a wonderful music player that handles large libraries and is quite customisable (especially smart playlists).

keybits··on Claude-3.5-sonnet 'artifacts' system prompt is a doozy
The https://claude.ai/ UI can now build and then render on-demand web apps - here's what Simon Willison got when he prompted "Build me a web app that teaches me about mandelbrot fractals, with interactive widgets": https://fedi.simonwillison.net/@simon/112650324117263516

The 'artifacts' system prompt in the linked Twitter thread is what it uses to do that. Crazy stuff!

keybits··on DuckDuckGo was down
Being discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40453077
keybits··on DuckDuckGo was down
A Microsoft outage is the source of this problem:

A massive Microsoft outage affects Bing.com, Copilot for web and mobile, Copilot in Windows, ChatGPT internet search and DuckDuckGo.

Microsoft outage started at approximately 3 AM EDT and seems to have primarily affected users in Asia and Europe.

keybits··on Nix is a better Docker image builder than Docker's image builder
The pricing page for StableBuild says

Free …

Number of Users 1

Number of Users 15GB

Is that a mistake or if not can you explain please?

keybits··on Spreadsheets are all you need
> What about Google Sheets? > This project actually started on Google Sheets but the full 124M model was too big and switched to Excel. I’m still exploring ways to make this work in Google Sheets but it is unlikely to fit into a single file as it can with Excel.

I wonder if it would work in https://rowzero.io/home ?

keybits··on Form to DB
I love Grist, and relevant to this discussion, it now has forms: https://www.getgrist.com/forms/

Grist is open source, Python scriptable and each project is stored in a SQLite database.

keybits··on Show HN: Pika – Simple blogging software
I can relate to wanting something simpler to use than a static site generator or a full fledged CMS!

For me to use a personal website application I want it to be open source in case the provider ever disappears. I took this approach with my take on a personal blogging app, PostOwl (https://github.com/PostOwl/postowl). It has a similar in-place editing feel to Pika. Now I just need to offer a hosted version so people don't have to install it themselves!

keybits··on Show HN: I scraped 25M Shopify products to build a search engine
I can also highly recommend TypeSense and have no affiliation. You'll save a lot of money and get much faster results.
keybits··on Llamafile lets you distribute and run LLMs with a single file
Simon Willison has a great post on this https://simonwillison.net/2023/Nov/29/llamafile/
keybits··on Kagi finally let me lay Google Search to rest
Looks like this could change in the future, quoting from my Kagi settings screen:

> Save My Search History

> Currently this option can not be turned on. Kagi does not save any searches by default. In the future we may add features that will utilize your search history and then we will allow you to enable this.

keybits··on Pixel 8 to have seven years of Android updates
> I'd love a return to the old snap-fit plastic cases.

Fairphone is worth a look for this: https://shop.fairphone.com/fairphone-5

keybits··on Passkeys are generally available
Secretive might be what you're looking for: https://github.com/maxgoedjen/secretive
keybits··on Hush – Noiseless Browsing for Safari
Wipr does remove cookie warnings. From the linked page:

> Wipr blocks all ads, trackers, cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices...

I use Wipr and can confirm that I rarely see cookie warnings in Safari with it enabled.

I might be wrong, but I believe this is better than Hush as Wipr blocks cookies, while Hush accepts website defaults.

keybits··on Welcome to Datasette Cloud
Check out Grist in the ‘Access with sane backend’ space. SQLite, open source and fantastic UX https://www.getgrist.com/ and https://github.com/gristlabs/grist-core

I use and love both Datasette and Grist - they’re complementary.

keybits··on Show HN: PostOwl, in-place editable blog powered by SvelteKit and SQLite
Great question. I'm working on this now. Expect documentation updates soon. https://www.postowl.com/newsletter/ to get updates.

keybits··on Google vs. the Open Web
Related to WEI, Apple already has something similar live for Safari users, see: "Apple already shipped attestation on the web, and we barely noticed" - https://httptoolkit.com/blog/apple-private-access-tokens-att...

Also in this space is ElectricSQL https://electric-sql.com/

I haven't had a chance to compare yet.

keybits··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
Contexts is excellent. There's a free trial. Keyboard FTW!

I configure it to be a minimal cmd-tab switcher that shows all windows for each app. I disable the sidebar and other unnecessary stuff.

keybits··on OrbStack – Fast, lightweight Docker Desktop and Colima alternative for macOS
from the link above:

> OrbStack is completely free to use during beta, but it will become a paid product afterwards.
