kev009··on Choosing a Public DNS Resolver
I always just set up root recursors at my home and other locations. I've never noticed any downside.
kev009··on 'Careless People' author claims Meta surveilled her for 12mos to enforce silence
Just keep hitting it with RICO lawsuits.

The money they piss away on the vanity projects should probably have always been going to risk management.

kev009··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
They carry $575m in debt, which is around 80-100 devs a year if they are paying something like 4.5% on it, ignoring tax write-offs on either case as well as equity comp. There is some calculus to all that, carrying some debt, doing buybacks, whatever other strategies to manage perceptions sure.
kev009··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
I think it's just the relative cost of money. Credit, debt, raises, revenue all rely on it. The tech industry got used to zero interest rate and then Covid-era stimulus. Now, suddenly, cashflow matters, but the companies are still run by the same people that only know perception management. Eventually they too will get cycled out.

kev009··on 75% More Pedestrians Have Been Killed Since 2009. Giant Trucks and SUVs Are Why
Possibly American drivers are more reckless? Compare intoxicated driving deaths in the US vs Britain for instance.
kev009··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
To make a stronger case of their graphic "you go under vs over" you'd only need to sample coroner reports and find evidence of crushing, which shouldn't be that hard given the sample size. This seems a bit correlation != causation pushing hard into p-hacking given the bounds from the 1980 data long before the hood-height hypothesis could carry and other obvious hypothesis like smart phone adoption curve.
kev009··on Cell-based architecture for resilient payment systems
There things are always a clusterfsck compared to the mainframe deployments.
kev009··on Flat Datacenter Networks at Scale at Amazon
It's not that dissimilar to how the Internet works. Although you have some steering like IX peering switches, and social/economic factors, but in whole it is fairly random.
kev009··on Brexit Ten Years On: The Economy
That seems orthogonal to being part of a league of nations. In practice it should be easier to reduce regulation with increased sovereignty, but again there is no direct causation. The benefit of a league is collective bargaining, and potential efficiencies like standardization. The downsides are effectively the unintended consequences of that.
kev009··on Brexit Ten Years On: The Economy
The term globalization is doing a lot of work in this comment, what does it mean to you?
kev009··on APC–2 – A professional record cutter for producing original playback discs
That is hilarious. Ikea with the Rexroth price tag.
kev009··on Learn PHP in 2026 (Yes, Really)
If you are using an LLM to write code you should grab the strongest typed thing available in the domain/organization.. Rust, Scala, Typescript, F#, etc.

kev009··on Cloudflare CEO is lying to you about the bot traffic jump
They don't obey *, they don't get their own entry. I'd rather just poison their data, it's a well known behavior from them.

Meta comes through with a /24 worth of scrapers and ignores robots.txt. I'm inclined to poison my data with fake information about Zuckerberg.
kev009··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
I wonder how much of this is a kind of alternate nostalgia like Vaporwave. Similar to the aesthetic draw of Severance.

Wandering around the halls of some functional institution was definitely a childhood past time of mine. Now still wondering how our parents and grandparents enjoyed private office space, lounge furniture designed by professional celebrities like Eames, and time, doing more with less. Now stuck at home or wandering in some open plan space that looks like college kids got permission to use a charge card at Ikea.

kev009··on Linux/M68k
There's a really good interview with one of the 68060 architects that posted recently https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1takr2k7Yfo just sit through the intro trust me it gets deeper than you'd think from the first impression.

Probably one of the better CPU interviews I've seen in recent times. He spills some interesting knowledge, the 68060 was a kind of serendipity for Mot that was otherwise winding up the 68k. It was partially acquired and acquihired from an external fabless design startup. Fills in some gaps as to why the CPU wasn't as well known as priors (obviously there were more choices by the time it came out). And a bit of tangents into Coldfire, ARM-M, and RISC-V.

kev009··on IBM Spins Off the First Pure-Play Quantum Chip Foundry
Two different product lines. POWER systems are sold by the socket, on the higher end sometimes you get some license disabled cores but it's usually trivial. Mainframes are the opposite, you usually get the full monty machine that is extremely limited by licensing.
kev009··on Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 400Gb/S and Beyond (2022) [pdf]
Control plane vs data plane. The control plane is a heap of java and some python ran in AWS. The data plane is bare metal FreeBSD servers with hardware tuned to certain parameters, usually a capacity tier and a flash tier, and sometimes a cost tier for smaller regions.
kev009··on Intuit to lay off over 3k employees to refocus on AI
I've been using it out of laziness because I know it will import the previous year. But it is pretty buggy and getting worse, they clearly want you to move off the desktop software.

If you look at the actual generated tax forms, there's a lot of extra pomp around filling out some pretty trivial forms and worksheets. If they cut the desktop software I think I will just move to something like https://www.freetaxusa.com/.

kev009··on The SGI Buyer's Guide (2003)
Depends what you are trying to do and what is fun to you. Artisanal assembly on an 8-bitter can be therapeutic. I'm quite happy to let Claude rip through radare2 and ghidra de-compilations without understanding the intermediate steps.
kev009··on The SGI Buyer's Guide (2003)
Once upon a time this stuff was so cheap, a little later than the (2003), because IRIX was discontinued and nobody knew what to do with all of the surplus. Something like a Tezro was always a little pricey and filled a permanent niche, but I got tons of Origin 300s and stuff like that without thinking much about it at the time. I've got the Router rack and several IR3/IR4 bricks.

LLMs actually makes retrocomputing a lot more "fun" because you can slop out things that would take way too long to do by hand for pure art and exploration.

kev009··on Technofascism
Yeah, shitcoins and fake product launches are new territory. Some of the others were a little more circumspect in graft or more likely it was others driving the larger graft to more careful benefactors. This Iran tarpit really blew open the reality of Trump the man: he is a sock puppet, and I think his graft is probably something like an O(1) problem while the republic faces an O(n^m) problem including unmitigated foreign influence.

It makes me ponder an interesting philosophical question about raking a pyramid scheme along proximal real vs perceived valuation. I guess the damage is all the same, but things get more flagrant the longer it goes on.

kev009··on Technofascism
You misunderstand my point because I probably agree with you. But feudalism in the USA goes back to the beginning, and no other country is a particular exemplar although you can find a few social democracies that are or were functional while the population was largely homogeneous.

You are misinformed about the relative power. The industrialists eclipsed the current technocrats in every way imaginable, several of them had whole number percent of GDP level of wealth. Musk is the only one that comes close in modern times, yet a lot of this is in notes on largely speculative enterprises while the industrialists controlled the literal engines of society. If Palantir or Google or Amazon collapse, it will make a dent in the stock market for a couple years but it doesn't matter the same as losing your national industrial base. So they are kind of sock pupating their own stakes.

kev009··on Technofascism
They are equally bad because they are actually the same people playing both sides. Do you think Palantir is conservative and Netflix is liberal? Neither actually care about either of these things. The differences are a basic misdirection playing to natural inclinations to control the population I would argue all the way to illusions of choice. And the sooner people grow out of their public school educations, the sooner it'll change.
kev009··on Technofascism
Always a yawn when someone is too wet behind the ears to see the two sides of the same coin. This has been going on since I've been alive to witness it.
kev009··on ASCII by Jason Scott
Most of that was vintage test equipment AFAICT. It is nice to be able to query an LLM and say "how do I fix this boat anchor with these symptoms". These tools have been quite helpful for retrocomputing hobbies for me.
