kercker··on Alan Rickman, Harry Potter and Die Hard Actor, Dies Aged 69

kercker··on Tests on skull fragment cast doubt on Adolf Hitler suicide story
After reading the article, I can't see how this discovery cast doubt on Adolf Hitler suicide story. The skull fragment may tot belong to Hitler, but that has nothing to do with the possibility that Hitler committed suicide. It only shows that the soviets were wrong to think that the skull fragment come from Hitler.
kercker··on Data Saved in Quartz Glass Might Last 300M Years
Even if the data saved in Quartz Glass last 300M years, 300M years later, how can they figure out what all these binary digit mean, without knowing the format of the data.

For something lasting so far into the future, some clues must be left to help someone in the future to extract the information from the media.

kercker··on Google services set for 'return' to China
Goole withdrew from China years ago because it didn't want to be evil.

Now Google plans to return to China, with the same evil or more evil government still there.

This clearly shows us that in the business world, there is no evil or non-evil, only money or non-money.

That aside, I'm glad that Google is coming.

kercker··on Interview by a 15 Year Old
"I think all kids should learn how to program at some point. I'm not sure what's the right age." I do not think all kids should learn how to program. I think programming is just one of many skills that one can master, not a must-have skill.
kercker··on Indonesia is burning. So why is the world looking away?
Why don't the people of democratic Indonesia choose a president, a government that cares about pollution, cares about the lives?

The author may expect with more intense coverage from the renowned international media community, the government of Indonesia will pay more attention to the problem, and perhaps the government will take effective measures to tackle this problem.

Due to the coverage on air pollution of China from domestic and foreign media, especially on PM 2.5, the majority of Chinese people slowly become aware with the health risks posed by the air pollution. This put pressure on the Chinese government, and since then the government has promised to clean the air, and they really are taking steps to reduce pollution.

kercker··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
"This is the viewport bug when you try to enter a comment."

This viewport bug appears when I just open the comment page.

kercker··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
The comment page doesn't scale well with Firefox on my hm note 1s. I have to manually zoom out to get the full view.

That aside, the homepage looks good. I'd like the new look be kept, with the comment page rewritten.

kercker··on Dennis Ritchie Day
I don't think we should have a Dennis Ritchie Day, just because California has a Steve Jobs day, and they passed away in the same month, in the same year, and the whole world that time seemed only mourned the passing of Steve Jobs and ignored Dennis.
kercker··on Great Firewall rising: How China wages its war on the Internet
People in my village get corrupt information from watching TV, browsing the web, and most importantly from chatting with others, from rumors. They talked about rumors about 100+ billion yuan involved in Zhou Yongkang's corruption. They talked the affairs between previous President Jiang Zemin and singer Song Zuying. They talked about the former propaganda head Li Changchun directed the murder of a policewoman. You see, we can get many knowlege from chattng with each other.

From the daily newspapers,we can get the impression that people in NPC are super riches. But members of NPC are puppet, we don't care that much of their wealth than the wealth of the officials of real powers.

People also get information from blogs and BBS.

Our grandparents went through the great famine, the cultural revolution. If we are curious, they have many stories to tell us. I get many information about that period from grandpa.

kercker··on Great Firewall rising: How China wages its war on the Internet
Most of my friends here in China just do good without the open internet. Like the article says, for every major blocked application or website, there is a home-grown substitute. People can get the information or the service they need from these substitutes.

I personally find that that the Chinese version of Wikipedia is blocked is annoying.

If the Great Firewall must exist, I'd like it to be more advanced. This way, it can block in a finer granularity. Instead of blocking a whole website, it can block an individual webpage that annoys it.

kercker··on Facebook iOS App Scrapes Your Clipboard?
Pocket on Android can also do this, I never thought it as a problem, but a functionality that facilitated share of urls from apps that can not share urls to other apps on my phone, but can copy the url.
kercker··on MIT indefinitely removes online physics lectures and courses by Walter Lewin
This resembles the practices of universities in China, that when a famous alumnus is accused of corruption, all that remind people of his existence in the campus are removed.
kercker··on Regex Crossword
Funny, instructive.

Good to practise regular expressions.

kercker··on China bans wordplay in attempt at pun control
Chinese government has a say in every aspect of its people's life.

It controls what books can be read, what movies or TV series can be watched, what news can be reported, what part of the Internet can they access, what words can be said by TV anchors (no acronyms like "NBA").

kercker··on MIT-related work that has transformed computer science
The title should be "50 ways that MIT has transformed computer industry". Not too much are about "computer science". To say that MIT has transformed computer industry, it should include include someone like Leslie Lamport.
kercker··on Jonathan Corbet, LWN editor-in-chief, has cancer
His kernel articles on LWN are great. Sad news.
kercker··on N.S.A. Breached Chinese Servers Seen as Security Threat
NYTimes seems to justify the action of NSA by saying quoting that "China does more in terms of cyberespionage than all other countries put together".
kercker··on One of the Most Alarming Internet Proposals I've Seen
Maybe he who proposes this proposal is just meant to be funny.
kercker··on Google's robots.txt
I'm sure that Baidu respects robots.txt.

This site coolshell.cn is boycotting baidu, so it tells Baiduspider that it doesn't want to be indexed by baidu.

Baidu respects this and doesn't index anything from this website.

kercker··on The Transparent Chinese
You can try GoAgent.
kercker··on Ubuntu tapped by China for national operating system
I think for Ubuntu to succeed in China, it will need support from Tencent, whose QQ is the most popular IM application in China, and until now doesn't have a decent, full-fledged Linux version.
kercker··on Ubuntu tapped by China for national operating system
I think this process will begin with the governments of all ranks whose office computers will be required to install Ubuntu.
kercker··on China to use Ubuntu Linux as reference architecture for operating systems
What excites me most is "Future releases will include integration with ... payment processing for Chinese banks", because this will make shopping on Linux a reality, which I have been waiting for for a long time, and when I want to buy an Amazon.cn kindle book, I can use the online bank accounts I have with me, without the necessity to change to Windows anymore.
kercker··on Sorry Google; you can Keep it to yourself
If Google keep creating new things, how can it manage so many products? Killing some old products is a good option for them, though bad for users.
kercker··on An open letter to the IIT Graduates
Some problems mentioned in this article also exist in China. Many young Chinese complain about the society, but do nothing to change that situation. I think a letter like this should be sent to the graduates of every universities, not just prestigious ones like IIT in India, or Tsinghua in China. Because history is not made by some elites, history is created by people of all ranks.
kercker··on Apple expects Chinese sales 'to overtake US'
I will not be surprised if China overtakes US to become apple's biggest market. iPhone is so widely known across China that people in the village I was born can speak something about it.

iPhone is showed off by many as a symbol of wealth and social statue, so they all want to possess one and many high schoolers in my school in China use iPhone as their phone.

However, I'd rather like to see Xiaomi, an Android phone made by a Chinese company, to develop well, and eat most of Apple's share.

Apology for my poor English.

kercker··on I want the world to scroll this way
There is always some text at the bottom of the screen, which make it hard for me to read.

This is the reason why I am not so much into this scrolling.
