kentich··on Remote work offers flexibility–but at what cost to young workers' learning?
> Employees who sat near their teammates received 18.3 per cent more feedback on their code and produced higher-quality code.

You can have a similar experience in remote work with tools like shared virtual frosted glass of the MeetingGlass app.

kentich··on Ask HN: What livestream do you keep open in a tab?
I keep ProductTrailers.xyz open when I'm eating my breakfast. It's a TV channel for Product Hunt launches.
kentich··on Ask HN: Navigating Source Code (especially on large projects)
I use Code Mind Map - a Visual Studio / VS Code extension that allows you to add nodes linked to code and jump directly to the linked code on a click. I built it for myself. You can find it at https://codemindmap.com
kentich··on Remote Work Is Not Making Us Miserable
It can be isolating, though, but the virtual frosted glass technology might change even that.
kentich··on Ask HN: What do you watch during lunch or dinner, if you're by yourself?
ProductTrailers.xyz - TV channel for Product Hunt launches.
kentich··on X permanently banned my 15-year-old account for sharing my own open-source lib
My 9 y/o account on Reddit was shadow banned because I shared a URL of my app in subs specifically aimed at sharing apps/side-projects. No warning, no explanation. It was just an execution-style ban. It seems that the social media giants want the audience to feel as if a sword of damocleis is constantly hanging over them. One step out of the line that no one says you nothing about, and you are executed.
kentich··on LinkedIn is a cesspool of scammers and identity theft
My account just was stolen. I received a couple of push notifications on my smartphone which I didn't react, and then received an email notification that a new email address was added to my account. And then I lost access to the account. What a piece of crap LinkedIn is.
kentich··on Ask HN: What is the one YouTube channel you recommend I subscribe to?
Take a look at ProductTrailers.xyz - a TV channel for Product Hunt launches.
kentich··on Remote work didn't kill collaboration. Invisible teammates did
Meetings with shared frosted glass (with the MeetingGlass app) can be a great solution for this. It is relaxed meetings with mutual visibility and frosting, like when using a physical frosted glass. It feels a lot more comfortable and a lot friendlier than meetings using the mainstream video apps. Maybe invisible teammates will be willing to become visible with frosted-glass video meetings.
kentich··on Ask HN: What is one thing about AI that annoys you the most?
That it is called AI.
kentich··on We Ran the Numbers. Remote Work Is Bad for Us
Well, have you tried having stress-free virtual frosted glass meetings (the MeetingGlass app) with your colleagues? Maybe you wouldn't have such numbers if you did.
kentich··on Ask HN: What Are the Trade-Offs of Working Fully Remotely?
Isolation. But there is a solution: virtual frosted glass video meetings (via the MeetingGlass app). You can be behind a shared layer of virtual frosted glass with your colleagues. It works like the real frosted glass: mutual visibility and frosting.
kentich··on Remote work is bad for you
The author mentions loneliness of remote work, but he didn't do a research of tools against that. For example, there is a tool called virtual frosted glass video meetings (via the MeetingGlass app) that allows you to be behind a shared layer of virtual frosted glass with colleagues. It functions like the physical frosted glass and makes you feel relaxed while being on video.
kentich··on Ask HN: Is software engineering still a good career choice for new students?
I am afraid the software engineering industry is increasingly becoming like the music industry, which was killed by being able to get any song for free. Open source, free, fremium apps, lower threshold of entry due to AI, all of that is killing the market. Soon, you will not be able to make any money out of it unless you're a big player.
kentich··on Ask HN: How do you stay focused while working from home?
I work in intervals using my own app called Black Screen for Windows.
kentich··on Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?
What field? They brought back up that old sci-fi term AI specifically for neural networks to create a false impression among people that this is a technology that can "think."
kentich··on Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?
They called it AI instead of calling it neural networks and therefore provoked unrealistic expectations for this technology. Criticism will never end because of the fraudulent naming of this technology.
kentich··on Remote work, not AI, has sidelined recent college graduates, research finds
You can use virtual frosted glass video meetings if you want to have more presence with employees. This problem is solvable, so stop scapegoating remote work.
kentich··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for interviews nowadays?
Nope, you'll get a lawsuit for discrimination if you explicitly test for IQ. That's why they do it implicitly. The scheme is very simple: hire people with the highest IQ, and since they have high IQ, they will figure at least something out.
kentich··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for interviews nowadays?
Leetcode is implicit IQ testing. That is why they will likely keep it despite AI.
kentich··on Ask HN: Why are companies so distrustful of remote employees?
You can talk to them at any moment and ask them what they are working on without getting to them through calling, texting, etc. Real-time communication is much easier than async communication.
kentich··on Ask HN: Why are companies so distrustful of remote employees?
Because they can't see them. Seeing is believing. They don't know that they can have them behind a virtual frosted glass via the MeetingGlass app. With mutual visibility and mutual (un)frosting - just like through physical frosted glass. Such frosted privacy feels great and is equal for everyone.
kentich··on Ask HN: What dev tools do you rely on that nobody talks about?
A VS Code/Visual Studio extension for creating mind maps with nodes linked to code called Code Mind Map.
kentich··on Ask HN: Is it just me?
The reason for things you've described is that LLMs are forgetful. They just can't remember the context and have to research the code almost every time you prompt. Even the code it itself wrote. This leads to re-implementation of the same features with different code, code duplicates, missing the implementation of corner cases, etc.
kentich··on Ask HN: What can we do about explosion of self promotion in HN comments
A bit of self-promotion does not hurt anybody. Stop whining and skip such comments. The assault on self-promotion on Reddit has already buried countless good projects and startups.
kentich··on The Remote-Work Dream Isn't Dead, but It's Slipping Away
No, it's not slipping away. With tools like frosted video meetings, you can have it on a bigger scale.
kentich··on Ask HN: Share your vibe coded project

kentich··on The Anti-Pomodoro Technique: Focus on Taking Breaks, Not Watching the Timer
> Having the window go black would drive me insane.

It is too easy to ignore the timer, that's why I think forcing breaks is a good idea. In the app I built for this, you can remove black screen if you really want but in an inconvenient way so that it is not too easy.

kentich··on Ask HN: If Everyone Can "Build" a SaaS, What Becomes Valuable?
Neural networks are not the magic wand that will create a high-quality app for you.
kentich··on Ask HN: What non-LLM tools have meaningfully improved your dev productivity?
Code Mind Map extension for Visual Studio / VS Code to create mind maps with nodes linked to code. https://codemindmap.com
