kenrik··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
Hello fellow Texan.
kenrik··on Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place
Slack grew their workforce too quickly.

Actually the Slack I remember from when it first came out is more or less the same product they have now. I'm not really sure what all of those people were doing for all of those years.

kenrik··on Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place
> Also the interview was on a Tuesday or something and they said that they were out of money on Friday but were confident they would get more money on Monday.

> They wanted me to start immediately and when I turned them down because of the funding, they asked if I would start on Monday.

Is is straight out of a comedy sketch, I feel like you could take that to an open mic night and kill with it.

kenrik··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
Maybe Elon buys Reddit next /s
kenrik··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
It'll be a bloodbath if the deal falls through since there was a runup when Elon first started sniffing around.

The fact that it's not pegged to the purchase price already shows there is some skepticism that it actually closes.

kenrik··on Passenger with “no idea how to fly” lands plane after pilot incapacitated
I'm also an owner of an older 182 (1966 - 182K) I agree with you the POH won't really teach someone enough about the aircraft to fly it let alone operate the radios.
kenrik··on Passenger with “no idea how to fly” lands plane after pilot incapacitated
All planes are required to have the original POH onboard. However those don't really tell you how to fly the plane it's more focused on things like Vspeeds minimum flap extension speeds etc..
kenrik··on Passenger with “no idea how to fly” lands plane after pilot incapacitated
Pilot here: It could help with some familiarity but generally in MSFS you can get away with ignoring the gauges and just mess around. The tutorial might gloss over some of it.

Having an unbelievable number of hours in MSFS when I was a kid ... landing a real plane is considerably harder and a ton of instruction time is just focused on getting you to land reliably. I finished my PPL in just over 40hrs which is close to the minimum. Most people will fall into the 60-100hr pool.

I'm dubious that this passenger really had zero experience it takes a good 6-10hrs to get decent at landing (as in not bending metal).

MSFS does however offer a reasonable feeling for the cruise portion of a flight.

kenrik··on Hack your way through Stripe's Capture the Flag
Yeah it sucks I thought I was going to have fun tonight but the script kiddies had to go and ruin it by hosing the machine.
kenrik··on Facebook hit git performance issue on large repository
With that in mind it seems like there is a market for a git replacement for these huge repos.
kenrik··on Yale Discovers a Fungus That Eats Plastic
Now that's great news! I would be interested in the environmental impact of this fungus though. It would not be a good thing if the fungus turns out to cause more damage than the plastic itself.

One of the most important things we learned from early 20th century conservationist movement was that to "preserve" something the best thing you can do is leave it alone. Every time they tried to correct something in a ecosystem something else would break. They messed up a lot of Stuff in yellowstone until they learned to just let it be.

kenrik··on Ask HN: Shall I buy an 'ultrabook' or a MB Air?
I would say go with the Air, build quality is top notch and even if you don't use it everyday having a rock stable UNIX core can come in handy at times.

You might want to wait a bit though the new "Air" Macbook Pros are coming out soon and it's rumored they will have "Retina Displays" - God I hate that term

kenrik··on Ask HN: Best Cheap web hosting
I have worked with Inmotion a lot, they have great customer service. And reasonable prices for shared hosting @ About $6 a month. (I also have one of my dedicated servers with them.)

I brought down their some of their servers once and yet they were still very cool about the whole thing. < sarcasm >Who knew 10,000 concurrent connections could bring down a server </sarcasm> (Yes it was intentional, but no I was not doing anything "really bad")

kenrik··on What would you do if you were me?
My question is why don't you think your family would be supportive? I think that's where you should start, after you get that figured out I would suggest you explore the possibility on the side at some point you should "know" which direction to take. You need to keep your family in mind however you only have one life so if I were you I would at least explore to see if you can make some changes that would make you feel fulfilled.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:

Physiological Needs - Security Needs - Social Needs - Esteem Needs - Self-actualizing Needs <- This is what you feel you're "missing".

Good luck!

kenrik··on Ask HN: Is there a "learn Linux the hard way"?
The hard way.

Hmm I would take one of the stripped down command line only distros and build it up from there so that you get into the nitty gritty stuff.

Something like this: http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/welcome.html

Put it on a 128meg usb stick and have at it.

kenrik··on Show HN: Selling a web app, Auto Swatch
I think you're giving up too easy, IMO double down add new features and fight for it. You must have had some faith in the project at some point otherwise you would not have committed to the $200 a month in the first place. Burn the Ships.

In 1519, Captain Hernán Cortés and his army set out on one of the greatest conquests in the history of the world. Cortés was going to accomplish his goals no matter the consequences, despite being up against incredible odds. When he arrived near Veracruz with 500 soldiers, a dozen horses and a few cannons, the first thing he did was burn his ships so there could be no retreat. He told his men “You can either fight or you can die”. Returning to Spain was not an option anymore. By burning his ships, he not only cut off his only means of retreat, but also made his soldiers fight harder. They were all fully committed to the cause.

(I love this story)

Seriously don't give up now, failure is only the beginning of future success.

kenrik··on How our tribute to “The Hacker Way” pissed off a Facebook designer
"Error Establishing database connection" I think we killed the site.

Edit, it's working for now

I can understand how making a profit off of something like that could rub you the wrong way. However I think I personally would just be happy the message was worthwhile to other people and leave it at that.

kenrik··on Listen to your community, but don't let them tell you what to do
^ This! My company had a website that predated Google (seriously) when we updated it you can imagine the shock people had after using the same site for like 14 years.Incremental design in this case was out of the question it had to be forced. They will get used to it soon enough.

Remember the famous quote from Henry Ford: 'If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.'

Change for changes sake is not good however there are times where you NEED to change and you have to face the criticism and stand your ground. The trick is to know the difference.

kenrik··on Why You Shouldn't Hire More Developers
Anyone who has managed / hired people in a creative role know this to be accurate. Whenever I have hired new designers I can expect it to take A YEAR to get them up to speed. Now that may seem like a long time but even if you're an expert in your field there is still a lot of intricacies that will need to seep in over time. This can be two fold if they are customer facing positions (The ones I hire for) as there are relationships that need to be built (Who are you? where is Jon? I always deal with Jon!) Also you're not going to hand over working on "that account" that will cost you 100K if even the smallest mistake is made to "the new guy" so you end up giving them the grunt work and gradually work them up to the high profile stuff and this can take months and maybe (god forbid) they are not a good fit and will never get to that level.

All of this is why you need to make a decision really fast with a new hire if you're going to cut them loose. Imagine the productivity you loose (it's happend to me) when you have to let someone go after a year because they can't get to where you need them! You have to start from scratch.

kenrik··on My Recent Development Stack: OS X Tools
I was going down the "Maybe I should ditch Mac" thought process last night when I had to recompile PHP on OSX Server (10.6) so that I could enable GD and FreeType. I wish Apple would just leave the sources in the same folders you find them in on linux as I had to hunt through my build flags to figure out why each one could not find the dependencies.

At 2AM I finally was able to do my sudo make install and everything was right with the world again. :)

kenrik··on My Recent Development Stack: OS X Tools
I agree Sequel Pro is awesome, hands down best MySql client I have used on any platform. I also love Textmate, great text editor. For CSS - CSS Edit can't be beat however the developer is no longer offering it as a standalone app. :(
kenrik··on A Moment of Clarity in the Pursuit of Happiness
This reminds me of "Think and Grow Rich" - Best book ever written. I cant even remember how many times I have read it.

If I could I would purchase a million copies and give them away for free. It's that good.

kenrik··on Sunnytrail - get notified when influential people buy your products or service
Yeah I thought it was, I ended up at SnapEngage because of it and It seems like a great customer service tool. Definitely seems like something I would love to have when we go live. Customers first!
kenrik··on Sunnytrail - get notified when influential people buy your products or service
Interesting. Is this opt in on their part or are you doing some form of online stalking? I'm curious how it works the site has a very clean design. Good job.
kenrik··on VeriSign hit by hackers
The question is why don't you ever hear about some huge Chinese or Russian website being hacked? It seems most of these types of high level intrusions can be traced back to those two countries.

We can only HOPE that somewhere the US has a Top Secret Cyber Warfare group that's so good they never get caught.

kenrik··on France convicts Google Maps for unfair competition
But if Google actually "killed" all the competition and started charging what would prevent someone else from coming in and undercutting Google? In technology if there is an opening there is always someone waiting to fill it (I know Apple is interested in the space). Also there will always be a need for low price and high price options (iPad / Kindle Fire) If what you're offering is worth the price that you charge then you should not have an issue finding customers.

P.S. I would be more surprised if this were a US Court.

kenrik··on Wikipedia's list of lists of lists
LOL good find.
kenrik··on Do you like online privacy? You may be a terrorist
You may call me Achmed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go

Seriously though did they lower the requirements to become a government employee even further? Who comes up with the stuff? I would laugh but it's actually kind of disturbing that these are the people who we rely on to prevent actual "Terrorists" from doing "Evil".

kenrik··on Is Google (and mod_pagespeed) the Poor Man's CDN?
If you need a CDN you most likely can afford to pay for one. No? I mean even if you're just loading your images through S3 unless you're getting some crazy number of hits it's only going to cost you a few bucks a month. I'm all for CDNs however many people think that you need it (thanks to yslow and google) for a basic website and it's just not the case. if you're not under a high traffic situation that extra hop can actually make your site slower than if you just served the files from your server.

If you're on a php/database driven site (early on) I would be willing to wager that your optimization time would be better spent following that string. If your website can only handle 25 hit/s because you're killing MySQL with SELECT* FROM ALL type commands the CDN is not going to do you much good. After you're sure your code is optimized and you feel you need it, sure have at it! there are plenty of good CDNs out there.
