ken47··on Pakistan cuts off phone and internet services on election day
This is not a criticism on standardized testing per se. But the methodology could use a serious upgrade in the 21st century.
ken47··on Pakistan cuts off phone and internet services on election day
This test seems to control your trajectory in Korean society to a very high degree, which seems like overkill in my view, because a test can only be so reflective of real-life skills. I have a family member who did very well on the test and got into Seoul National University, which is reputed to be the best university in Korea. According to them, their IQ is "only" 120-130, but they have very good memory, and are able to study endlessly without tiring. Are those useful skills? Yes, for many things, but not for everything.
ken47··on Go 1.22
Yes, but TS users can stay on the "type-newbie" path, which is still a huge improvement over vanilla JS and doesn't take much effort. What I've had issues with is devs who came from the vanilla JS world and love it, so they go out of their way to avoid utilizing more complex types when they would add no-cost safety (aside from the initial minutes or hour spent learning the feature).
ken47··on More misdrilled holes on 737 MAX in latest setback
This kind of CEO is more likely to make Boeing's safety even worse.
ken47··on More misdrilled holes on 737 MAX in latest setback
Boeing apparently can't withstand the immense quarterly financial scrutiny it is under without making dangerous engineering trade offs. Time to take the company private?
ken47··on Optimistic thinking linked with lower cognitive abilities
"Excessive" optimism should be defined in the intro. Naturally, it's more click-baity if it's not.
ken47··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
What kind of performance drop are you seeing?

ken47··on Adding type safety to object IDs in TypeScript
Typescript is a work of art created on a barren canvas. Kudos to the team behind this language.
ken47··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
I see a couple of comments regarding frame rates on load. The Flutter team claims they addressed that with their new rendering engine. Has anyone found this not to be the case?
ken47··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
The Flutter team say they’ve addressed this with a release that updated the rendering engine.
ken47··on Intel's Humbling
This reminds me of the situation at Boeing, albeit w/ less fatal consequences. For a long time, it's been a company that has focused on maximizing profits through "innovative" business practices, first and foremost, rather than innovative R&D. It's completely unsurprising that Intel has been struggling lately against its genuinely inventive competition.
ken47··on Researchers have found a faster way to do integer linear programming
This discovery may change the world in unpredictable and, perhaps very big, ways. Discoveries like this put all the self-important feature / model developers that we work with in our big tech day jobs into context.
ken47··on Can Earthquakes Be Predicted? (2022)
What if earthquakes could not only be predicted, but manually triggered? Imagine the warfare implications.
ken47··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
Unless you're passing honors and AP classes in HS, the knowledge gained by simply graduating does not give a strong signal about superiority / inferiority for military purposes.

Granted the Army will have to work harder on average to train these people, but some learn better outside of the traditional classroom.

Then be prepared for you or your family to be drafted if war breaks out with a formidable foe.
ken47··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
I wish politics articles wouldn't make it to the top page of Hacker News. There's already enough political discussion in a million other places.
ken47··on From slow to SIMD: A Go optimization story
Isn't Go quite the suboptimal language for performing linear algebra operations?
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
If they were targeting an adequately scientifically trained audience, sure. I don’t think they are.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
I assumed the average New York Times reader is above average in intellect and could appreciate an irrefutable word choice, like “advanced” in place of “confirmed.” I could be wrong.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
The job of people who write titles like this is to be very pedantic about word choice. I’ll have to disagree with you on this being a “plain wrong” interpretation of the given wording.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
It begs the question as to whether the author of the title actually believes the Big Bang is confirmed from a scientific point of view. That would suggest an atheistic belief.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
Shame that instead of highlighting one of the many great things that this man did, they use incorrect phraseology to claim he did something he didn’t do.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
A scientific theory cannot really be "confirmed." The word choice is suspect. The Big Bang Theory is consistent with many properties of the known universe, but cannot adequately explain others. Claiming it is the ground truth takes a leap of faith, which however small compared to religion, requires a measure of faith as implied.
ken47··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
The semantics of the title seem off and written by a non-scientist. A scientific theory cannot be proven, so the significant word choice of “confirm” is poor.
ken47··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
I see lots of comments about potential alternatives to 30%. But the only way to really find new optima is to mandate App Store competition. Force Apple and Google to expose the exact API that their app stores are using and allow the laws of economics to determine the outcome. Even under these conditions, only mega corporations and organizations could compete with Google and Apple, so it’s not utopia, but way better than what we’ve got.
ken47··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
Imagine a world where laws forced Apple to enable feature an Apple-compatible version of the Play Store alongside the App Store and vice versa. Likewise with Kindle and any other developer that wants to adhere to a legally mandated App Store API.

How would that not be a net positive for the mobile device ecosystem?

ken47··on US Supreme Court declines to hear appeals in Apple-Epic Games legal battle

ken47··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
I would hope no company relies solely on leetcode questions, but the common understanding was that Google was, at least in the not-so-distant past, among big tech companies, the closest to that style.

The weight that a company allocates to communication skills can also be measured on a spectrum. What I suggested in the comment to which you responded may be considered extreme by engineering interview standards, but the more you can probe an engineer’s communication style during an interview, especially in an adversarial conversation, the higher confidence you can have in their interpersonal compatibility with your team.

It’s one thing to answer questions about behavioral characteristics, which can be prepped. It’s another to induce the behavioral characteristics you’d like to test and see them for yourself. That’s a lot harder to fake.

ken47··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
I’m not the kind of person to say that an elite degree is end all be all. But the kind of skill a person exhibits to get into a good college and complete a degree is not necessarily well exercised within the sprint that is a tech interview. Obtaining a degree, especially at a good school, is much more akin to running a marathon. To the extent that you need hires who can be marathon runners for your team, I’d upweight an elite degree accordingly.
