Boring computer engineer by day, dabbler in many weird things during my spare time. Cryptocurrency advocate in (almost) all its forms. Mild stablecoin skeptic, however.

Always do your own research!

kemonocode··on Riot extorts League of Legends legacy version fan project?
Something smells fishy here. Surely sending a C&D letter would have been more cost/time efficient for all parties involved? Then again, I wouldn't put it past Riot to try to employ these kind of shakedown tactics given their... ah, "culture".
kemonocode··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
A good red team pentest would have been to just stop after the first round of patches, not to try again and then cry foul when they get rightfully rejected. Unless, of course, social denunciation is part of the attack- and yes, it's admittedly a pretty good sidechannel- but that's a rather grisly social engineering attack, wouldn't you agree?
kemonocode··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
I have to question the true motivations behind this. Just a "mere" research paper? Or is it there an ulterior motive, such as undermining Linux kernel development, taking advantage of the perceived hostility of the LKML to make a big show of it; castigate and denounce those elitist Linux kernel devs?

So I hear tinfoil is on sale, mayhaps I should stock up.

kemonocode··on The Last Men’s Hotel in Chicago
Sure thing, that's fair. "No name-calling" is pretty clear-cut all things considered.

Notice I really haven't used the term myself (or "boomer" in a derogatory way) but it's the sort of thing that admittedly ruffles my feathers.

EDIT: Alright, apparently I did allude to someone being a boomer once, but it was fittingly in a generational way and not as gratuitous name-calling.

kemonocode··on Apple Introduces AirTag
They probably caught enough flak with how incredibly unserviceable AirPods were and decided not to repeat the same mistake, especially here where it wouldn't give any benefit at all. Kind of a no-brainer, but you never know with Apple...
kemonocode··on The Last Men’s Hotel in Chicago
You can't help being born black, or being born a woman. However, you can not be an entitled person who abuses their privilege in order to get ahead of literally everyone else, which is the attitude a "Karen" embodies. Sure, I'll concede the name has been picked poorly, but to be honest, I really do not think it's nearly on the same category as racism or sexism.
kemonocode··on Turkey Bans Cryptocurrency Payments
Any port in a storm when you live in a country with zero trust towards your own legal tender.
kemonocode··on Turkey Bans Cryptocurrency Payments
The cat's out of the bag now. Cryptocurrencies will kept being used in tyrannical regimes even if under wraps, and governments will try to rein in to keep them under "control" in the rest of the world, but they're very much here to stay.

I expect stronger condemnation towards "anonymous" cryptocurrencies (Monero, Zcash et al) and making onboarding/offboarding for them more difficult, but that's about it.

kemonocode··on How to fight back against Google FLoC
> While I do understand that some people may not like it, I don't see how FLoC is particularly harmful.

Sure, I can give an example: it goes beyond simple basic fingerprinting, it allows you to be associated with a group of "others" (your cohort) in ways that can be dangerous to you.

Suppose you live in a country where you may not enjoy certain freedoms or some behaviors may be outlawed; end up in the wrong cohort(s) and a state actor will be able to know these things rather easily, this is not to say there aren't already means to do it today, but why make the job even easier for them?

kemonocode··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
Some people throw hissy fits about how polluting cryptocurrencies supposedly are yet they remain silent about the perverse incentives that spurred their creation and use. It's the war on drugs all over again, and getting angry about crypto and trying to outlaw it is just treating a symptom and not the disease.
kemonocode··on Reuters website goes behind paywall in new strategy
Here's the thing with the proliferation of paywalls in news sites: it just makes disinformation and the spreading of fake news all that much easier if you can't fact-check easily. I understand people need to get paid, but I don't know if this is quite the right way to go.
kemonocode··on Why My Blog Is Closed-Source
I'm not sure if I really buy most if not all of these arguments, especially the security one. Haven't we already established security through obscurity doesn't work that well?

Ultimately, a simple "because I don't want to and I don't want people to copy me, thus I'm not making it trivial" would have been enough.

kemonocode··on The Tarnished Moon
My HN experience has considerably improved ever since finding out about n-gate.com, especially when it comes to summarizing long threads in a satirical way or if there's a big story I might have missed.
kemonocode··on It looks like Signal isn't as open source as you thought it was anymore
So why doesn't Telegram have the same issue? Just like Signal, the client is fully open source and most of the secure bits are client-side, but unlike Signal they make no pretenses about being "fully" open source as they've never published any server sources, nor they make hostile moves towards blocking third-party client interoperability.
kemonocode··on Addiction to Outrage (2020)
Not all causes are made equal, and they're not necessarily important to the same degree for everybody. That's not being "privileged" or "ignorant", that's the patent truth.
kemonocode··on An open letter in support of RMS being reinstated by the FSF
> On the other hand, Stallman has called for the killing of babies with Down Syndrome.

Would you mind providing a citation on this? Because I have yet to really read about it anywhere else.

EDIT: Ah, so it was a rather uncharitable interpretation on his views on abortion [0]. Again, a symptom of someone with zero social awareness and I'm sure it'd be thought to be beyond the pale for some people, but far from a genocidal maniac.

kemonocode··on An open letter in support of RMS being reinstated by the FSF
What really gets my goat about the RMS situation is that he's not neuronormative, the same people lambasting him are the same people who would deride judgement calls that harsh against someone who's on the spectrum, yet somehow he's an acceptable target.

Yes, he's awkward as all hell, and yes, he makes people uncomfortable sometimes and has no social filter, but his contributions are too many to be ignored and his behavior to me seems to be without malice.

kemonocode··on CutiePi – A Raspberry Pi 4 tablet
I'm sure it has been stated before but I do wonder why e-ink displays remain still so out of reach even though the sort of parents that were encumbering them have expired? It really does seem that anything that involves e-ink panels comes with a huge markup.
kemonocode··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
I was on board with this article: a genuine criticism of the entire NFT/cryptoart scene without making use of the environmental impact retort... up until, of course, it was brought up. The impact is not insignificant but it's grossly overstated [0], and it's been used as a tool for harassment which I have to staunchly reject.

kemonocode··on Phrack Magazine
Please consider using either Zulip or Matrix from the get-go, else if you just pick Discord you will find yourself in the very same situation as with Slack before long.

I was in a little CTF server which got flagged and taken down, even though there wasn't anything too particularly nefarious going on. Maybe someone did upload something dumb which raised flags on Discord's end, though.

kemonocode··on India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners and traders
Leave a tourniquet on for far too long and you risk losing a limb. And a limbless person will have a much lower quality of life. Likewise with capital controls, it might serve to treat the problem now but it does nothing to tackle the causes and all you're doing in the end is consolidating power for an authoritarian government and crippling your economy for decades to come.
kemonocode··on India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners and traders
Capital controls merely treat a symptom (flight of capital) instead of treating the disease (a faltering economy) and left on for any period of time only leads to further consolidation of power to the ruling class, at the expense of the rest of the populace.
kemonocode··on Bitcoin Breaks $60k
I know all too well the consequences of injecting a whole bunch of "empty" money into an economy as a Venezuelan. I can't tell you if it's the right call on the short term or not in the case of US, but I'm sure the real consequences will be felt for years, if not decades after the pandemic is over.
kemonocode··on Bitcoin Breaks $60k
As much as I'm bullish on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general in the longer term, this feels like too much, too quickly. I don't really expect this bull run to last that much longer.
kemonocode··on The Unreasonable Ecological Cost of CryptoArt
Mainstream artists are the masters of empty posturing. I am quite certain that the vast majority of them do not give a flying fuck about cryptoart's impact to the environment, one way or another.

There are people who stick to their guns and those who were always critical/proponents of crypto- good! But it'll all be forgotten once the fad goes through its course.

kemonocode··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
A very interesting addition indeed to Bitwarden. I still personally prefer my own setup as I'm guaranteed not to run any risks of being siloed but I've started pointing others towards Bitwarden because of this and their strong commitment so far towards Open Source [0]

kemonocode··on Binance under CFTC investigation over trading activities: report
Surely that's only in the best interest of the people, just like in all the areas a major government has a vested interest in exerting a large amount of control upon. Surely.

EDIT: wording

kemonocode··on Apple has gone to extraordinary lengths to make scroll bars invisible
I feel like designers at Apple at large with others following in tow to emulate them have been waging a silent war against the scroll bar for a while now.

Making it less and less visible until it ultimately disappears sounds reasonable when infinite scrolling (and heavens forbid, scroll hijacking) has rendered it far less useful.

kemonocode··on Interview with Vitalik Buterin on ETH2, Scaling Plans, NFTs, etc.
NFTs are fine to tokenize things that are valuable because they are limited, say, like property deeds. You own the token, you own the deed, and it's possible to establish an one-to-one relationship.

Attaching a token to something that's inherently reproducible such as digital art yet with granting no means to actually enforce copyright is pretty much lunacy and it's just muddying the waters further when it comes to cryptocurrency.

kemonocode··on Conways Game of Life on Blockchain
It's deployed in a test network. The carbon footprint of this little experiment is negligible:

"This application would be able to run 'forever' - so long as there was some funds in an Ethereum account that could be used to run each 'step'.

However, the cost of Ethereum (and therefore 'gas') used to run smart contracts is so high that it would cost (in March 2021) over $80 just to register the smart contract, and to run a single 'step' of the game would cost over $2,000! No doubt that the code could be made more efficient and consume less resources, but hey that's just too much work for a concept app, so I have simply registered the contract on the Kovan test network instead, and use some 'fake' Ethereum to run the system. The app is the same, but it just points to the 'Kovan' test network instead of the Ethereum mainnet."
